Arizona President Robbins tells The Mercury News’ Wilner that media rights negotiations should conclude “soon” and rejects the idea that schools would leave for the Big 12 prior to a deal getting done. “It’s heavily dependent on (Pac-12 Commissioner Kliavkoff) and his team negotiating a good media deal for us to stay competitive. I don’t think anybody wants to leave. Why would you move for a couple million dollars a year more?” As far as what a competitive deal looks like, Robbins says: “I would love to be closer to the Big Ten or SEC, but being closer to the Big 12 is more realistic. (Kliavkoff) has done a great job working on the media deal, and I think he’ll bring us something that’s good enough.” Wilner also reports Robbins “didn’t answer directly” when asked about discussions between the Wildcats and the Big 12 but said he has friends in the conference and was in favor of adding the remaining Big 12 schools when Texas and Oklahoma left. “I personally liked the idea…of forming the Pac-20, or the Big Pac — whatever you’d want to call it. I thought it would have been really cool. But it got very complicated.” (link)

Up the road in Tempe, Arizona State President Crow tells the ASU State Press student newspaper the Pac-12 is "close to knowing where we're going to be, and I think we're close to a deal. I think that the Pac-12 media rights became more complicated with the departure of USC and UCLA. The media rights became more complicated also, as things always do because markets go like this. They're up and down, up and down. But, we have fabulous sports teams and the remaining teams, we're going to get a good offer. We're in the final stages of that process." Crow also asserts there "have been no discussions with the Big 12 conference on moving. I mean, there's been discussions between everyone everywhere on all things related to where our conference is going and where stuff's going to end up and what's happening. We are committed to the Pac-12." (link)

Asked whether a move to the Pac-12 is imminent, San Diego State AD Wicker tells CBS San Diego: “Their [Pac-12] TV deal is definitely gonna happen. I think it will happen in the next two weeks. Then we’ll see what happens.” (link) |

Former Louisville AD Jurich sits down with WDRB’s Crawford for a wide-ranging interview. Jurich says he hasn’t “been absorbed in [what’s happening now with the Cardinals] like I think people would maybe think I would be. It used to be everything, used to be 100% of me, used to be 110% of me. I gave every ounce of blood, sweat and tears to that program. And my loyalty, I think, hurt me. You know how many jobs I turned down, Eric. And I think that's probably the biggest mistake I ever made at Louisville was I should have taken one of those jobs and left and just run out of there.” On whether he would’ve returned to Louisville had he been approached by university officials during the AD search last year, Jurich notes that “the one thing I said was that I'm not going to campaign for anything. And I didn’t. … If they wanted to talk, and they have new management, if they wanted to talk we would have done it. You know, if they wanted me, then there would have been maybe a different story. But they wanted their own people. And they've got them now.” Lots more in the full interview, including his thoughts on leading a department in the NIL era, the IARP’s recent ruling and whether he plans on returning to the industry. Fairleigh Dickinson has made major strides in shoring up the athletic department, as Sportico’s Novy-Williams reports. Knights AD Hurlbut tells Novy-Williams that when faced with the reality of potential major cuts, he and Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Young “went into a bunker” to formulate a new financial plan. What they decided was that it made sense for a school of FDU’s size to increase net revenue by serving as an enrollment driver. Novy-Williams: “FDU had empty dorm rooms and space for more students, so more non-scholarship athletes would mean a lot more tuition at lower costs. The school also had a $200K grant option from the First Point Volleyball Foundation and an untouched one-time distribution from NCAA that could be applied to a new sport.” By adding men’s volleyball and women’s lacrosse, FDU was able to add nearly 60 student-athletes to campus at the cost of just 16.5 scholarships. Other sports began adding walk-ons, and the department eliminated some full- and part-time jobs. The results have been “dramatic,” as the Knights have gone from losing $4M on a $14M budget in October 2020 to being on pace to be profitable by 2025 when including student-athlete tuition. (link)

Alabama MBB student-athlete Miller arrived at today’s NCAA Tournament press conference accompanied by armed security, per Sports Illustrated’s Forde. Asked about the security presence, Crimson Tide HC Oats explained: “If you guys saw some of what I’ve seen sent his way, I think you’d understand why that’s the case. I don’t want to get into all that—the entire situation, as you know, is a heartbreaking situation on all accounts. But some of the messages from people that can sit behind fake email addresses—who knows if they’re real or not. … Our administration has seen stuff that I’ve seen, and [the security presence] is appropriate. It’s nothing that a college kid should have to go through.” Miller, when asked the same question, replied: “I feel like we always travel with security.” Forde: “That security presence was not seen last week at the Southeastern Conference tournament, and veteran NCAA tournament journalists could not recall seeing armed security in the interview room before.” (link)

The Collegiate Women's Lacrosse Officials Association and Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association are looking into the game’s rules and safety protocols after Yale student-athlete Everson was seriously injured in a game at Stony Brook last month. Everson, who suffered a ruptured kidney and severe internal bleeding that caused her to be hospitalized for two weeks, recalls the cross-check: “The ball went down, and I went to go grab it and I shot it and a girl kind of came in my blind spot and cross-checked me in the side. It felt like knives were being stabbed into me." Cross-checks are illegal, but no penalty was called, and IWLCA Executive Director Robertshaw says the organization reminded coaches of the points of emphasis in the rulebook, including one aimed at stamping out cross-checking, during a recent meeting. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Fletcher notes the “classification of women's lacrosse as a noncontact sport can also affect the type of emergency medical staff assigned to games. There were no ambulances or emergency medical technicians at the Stony Brook game -- although university officials said two physicians staffed the game -- and the medical personnel did not initially recognize the severity of Everson's injury.” More.
