The NCAA operated at a nearly $59M deficit for FY22 after generating revenue of $1.14B and expenses of $1.195B, per USA Today’s Berkowitz, who notes the association’s net assets stood at $458M. Berkowitz also points out the NCAA received a $17M loss-of-revenue insurance payout connected to the 2021 MBB tournament. Additionally, the NCAA recorded $90.5M in investment losses, while dividends, interest and realized gains totaled just over $18M, meaning the net investment losses totaled around $72M. Expenses included a $657M distribution to DI conferences and an “$84M charge taken as the NCAA on March 1, 2022, established a new business entity that is essentially an insurance company owned by the association itself,” according to Berkowitz. (link); DIII conferences received $4.98M in distributions, up from $4.9M in FY21. DIII reserves increased over $4.4M to $41.3M. NCAA VP of Enforcement Duncan sits down with Connect/MB Sports' Banker from the NCAA Convention to discuss pressing enforcement matters across the NCAA including NIL, cooperation from members, sports gambling and more. Duncan offers some best practices as they relate to athletic departments dealing with collectives, telling Banker: "We would always rather present a violation than process one, and so to the extent that we can, we're happy to work with schools, collectives, with some of the third parties involved in this environment, to share our understanding of what we're seeing, the bylaws as we understand them, in an effort to help schools [and] collectives not commit violations. But also to collect information because we know there are violations occurring, we know there are behaviors out there that are inconsistent with NCAA rules, and those relationships not only help us to prevent violations before they occur, but detect ones on other campuses after they occur. So, the other thing we can share with institutions and with collectives is types of behaviors that we would see that could raise an eyebrow in enforcement: "When a collective is announced, here's what we might be looking at. When we hear about collective behaviors, these are things that might cause a question or cause some correspondence with the enforcement staff, and we're always happy to share those things with schools, yet without giving interpretive guidance, which we won't do." NCAA President Emmert has “very mixed emotions” about stepping down next month and tells ESPN: “I look at all these challenges and complexities and I'm going to miss that. I like those, and I'd love to be someone who helps untangle them. On the other hand, I think it's the right time to make a change." Emmert also contends that while passing some form of NCAA rules years ago to regulate NIL would’ve put college sports in a better position than it is today, needing help from Congress was inevitable. As such, he believes incoming President Baker’s political savvy will be “critically important,” adding: “I'm sure that's part of what the board loved about him. He'll be able to move in that world very well." (link)

William Peace has canceled the remainder of its WBB season, citing student-athlete health and safety due to low roster numbers. Interim AD Shields: "The health and safety of our student-athletes, both mentally and physically, is our top priority. After conferring with our Athletic Training staff and Head Coach, we have made the decision to cancel the remainder of our season. Our Women's Basketball team has battled through injuries and adversity this season and we are proud of how they represented WPU in the midst of challenging circumstances." (link)

The NCAA has released the findings of its Coach Well-Being Study, which found that 80% of the 6K HC, AC and AHC respondents across all three divisions reported spending more time talking about mental health with their players than they did before the pandemic. About one-third of coaches reported they "constantly" or "most every day" experienced mental exhaustion, feelings of being overwhelmed by all that they had to do, and sleep difficulties. Additionally, coaches who identified as Black, Indigenous or people of color; female; or members of the LGBTQ+ community reported higher rates of mental health concerns, similar to data found in the student-athlete surveys. Among DIII respondents, 12% indicated they felt high levels of stress related to the perceived need to recruit four-year transfers into their programs. Full report. (link)

Former Mary Hardin-Baylor WBB HC Morefield unloaded an expletive-filled tirade on his team prior to his separation from the department earlier this week. Linked tweet thread includes testimonials from former student-athletes who assert this was not an isolated incident. Video included. (link); Morefield put out a statement, which reads, in part: “My coaching intensity to build a consistent championship program did not align with [UMHB]. It was not my finest moment and out of character. My emotions got the best of me due to a player who had just torn her ACL moments prior during practice. Baruch MVB in the headlines at the New York Times and Washington Post following unfounded claims by Rep. Santos (R-N.Y.) that he is a former student-athlete. HC Moule laughs about the incident when talking about his philosophy: “The No. 1 thing that came to mind is we really encourage accountability.” NYT piece focuses on aspects of the commuter school whose students often hold down jobs while enrolled. AD MacCulloch: “We like to utilize sport here as their outlet. Two hours in the pool where I’m not figuring out calculus calculations, I don’t have to have my McDonald’s uniform on and my mom isn’t yelling at me for not taking out the trash. Those are hours of solace and rejuvenation.” Per a school spokesperson: “Baruch does not have a record of George Santos or George Devolder [another name Santos has used] born on July 22, 1988, with a graduation year of 2010, enrolled at Baruch College. There is no record of this person … attending Baruch, and therefore, [was] not a student-athlete on one of Baruch’s athletic teams.” (link, link)
