#5: Sewanee is undergoing a two-part external review with an outside consultant to provide a report to the Board of Trustees by February and Middlebury AD Quinn and Washington & Lee AD Hathorn reviewing the Tigers’ department. On the facilities front, AD Shackelford notes the potential need for Soccer to have a new facility, given Puett Field is not wide enough to host an NCAA postseason competition. Shackelford: “I honestly think that if I move the soccer team onto a brand new field, I’m going to have many alumni, people who care about soccer a long, long time, be disappointed if we’re not playing the Puett. The Puett is a beautiful place to play soccer, but the truth of the matter is I think our coaches want a field that’s wide enough to compete on and one they don’t have to share with four teams.” (link)

#1: Following a three-year review process, Whittier intends to discontinue sponsorship of FB, MLAX and Men’s & Women’s Golf at the end of their respective playing seasons, trimming the department to 18 sports. The school cites declining youth participation in football, other in-state institutions dropping football, “growing concern” surrounding CTE and financial considerations. President Oubre and Board of Trustees Chair Santana: “Admittedly, the Poet programs sunsetting at this time are disproportionately more expensive to sustain than other sports that have thrived and remained competitive within our SCIAC conference. Our goal is to focus on the athletic teams that can be best supported on campus and via conference play.” Approximately 120 student-athletes and 13 coaches are directly impacted. More. (link)
