UTRGV AD Chasse Conque inks a contract extension through 2028. President Guy Bailey: “Chasse is one of the premier athletic directors in the nation, consistently raising the bar for our athletics department through his outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to the Rio Grande Valley. His transformative impact has not only enhanced our athletic programs but has also deepened our connection with the community. We are privileged to have such an accomplished leader at the helm, and we anticipate even greater accomplishments under his continued guidance.” (link)

New Ohio State President Ted Carter Jr. comments on what he’s looking for in a new AD (and a new Provost): “They both have to know how to work across a very complex spectrum. They have to be able to make hard decisions, because there will be some hard decisions coming up.” Specific to athletics, Carter points to the moving sands of NIL, conference realignment, managing 36 programs & the new College Football Playoff. The Men's Basketball Oversight Committee adopted legislation that makes several changes to the recruiting calendar, including reducing spring nonscholastic evaluation periods from two weekends to one weekend and moving the period to May after the transfer window closes; extending current dead periods in May and July; adding Mother's Day, Father's Day and Juneteenth as dead periods; reducing the number of days for nonscholastic evaluation periods and the NCAA College Basketball Academy; allowing evaluations of international prospects participating on international teams at regularly scheduled international high school and club team practices, competition, league/cups/tournaments during the academic year recruiting period; making all academic year international recruiting/evaluation opportunities count toward the limit in recruiting person days (100); and limiting the opportunities per prospective student-athlete per year (7). Alabama has hired Washington Football HC Kalen DeBoer. The Crimson Tide will pay the Huskies DeBoer’s $12M buyout. USA Today’s Dan Wolken provides more context: “Two things happened in the middle of Washington’s season. 1. They had an AD change. 2. DeBoer hired Jimmy Sexton. Washington tried to get the deal done for many weeks. I think now it’s safe to surmise that Sexton knew what was about to happen.” (link, link, link)

Florida State Football HC Mike Norvell has agreed to an eight-year extension that will pay him more than $10M per year, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Seminoles AD Michael Alford: “We are thrilled that Coach Norvell has reaffirmed his commitment to Florida State University and our student-athletes. … We know how fortunate we are to have him as our head football coach, and our university is blessed to have him as one of its most visible ambassadors. As we move forward into a bright future, it is incredibly reassuring to know that Mike remained steadfast and focused on continuing his unifying, collaborative relationships with all of us at FSU." Dellenger notes Alabama “heavily pursued” Norvell, and “FSU not only agreed to a new deal but committed to a substantial increase in resources such as recruiting budgets, etc. The school is in the midst of $450M upgrade to the stadium & a FB-only operations center.” (link, link)

The Florida State-focused Rising Spear collective has released a statement following its implication in the NCAA’s finding of recruiting violations at FSU. It reads, in part: “Rising Spear separated from the individual employee (booster) referenced in the NCAA report immediately upon learning of the incident. The co-founders, employees or interns of Rising Spear have never spoken or communicated with the NCAA on this matter. None of Rising Spear’s current employees, interns or contractors worked for Rising Spear at the time of the violation. It is essential to note that these penalties expressly permit Rising Spear to continue working with student-athletes, including those who attend [FSU].” Furthermore, the collective explains that “nothing about these penalties changes those relationships or agreements.” Full statement. On3’s Pete Nakos suggests the penalty incurred by Florida State for NIL-related recruiting violations could be a portent of future enforcement and notes that, per a Yahoo report, the “NCAA’s enforcement team has screenshots of text messages from sitting head coaches sent directly to players competing on other college teams in attempts to get them to transfer schools.” Consequently, one source tells Nakos: “It’s ridiculous. You might as well just punish everyone. Nobody is innocent and you can’t allow your program to fall years behind.” But, Nakos submits, the “NCAA made its move, sending a message to collectives and schools that NIL infractions won’t go unnoticed and possibly marking the beginning of a new era for NIL.” (link)

Notably: “The 10,000-square-foot Athlete Recovery Center (ARC) is a retreat for all student-athletes to engage in both mental and physical wellness practices in an environment that emphasizes recovery and community. The one-of-a-kind space will consistently host programs with the sole focus of further impacting Clemson student-athletes’ holistic development.” Ribbon cutting took place today as the Tigers continue to invest. The ire of high-profile pundits notwithstanding, Sportico’s Anthony Crupi doesn’t view this weekend’s Dolphins-Chiefs playoff game on Peacock as “one of the all-time sports television disasters,” as The Ringer’s Bill Simmons predicts. “Yes, Peacock’s reach is suboptimal; as Comcast President Mike Cavanagh revealed last month at an industry conference, the streaming service has signed on ‘30M paying subscribers,’ which is about a third of the number of households served by the NBC broadcast flagship. Peacock’s sub count is also dwarfed by legacy cable networks like ESPN (70.2M homes) and NFL Network (52.3M). Clearly, the Tua-Mahomes shootout is destined to be the year’s least-watched playoff game.” But, as indicated by the fact that the fourth quarter will air commercial-free, Crupi notes Comcast is “more invested in the long-term growth of Peacock than the immediate adrenaline spike that comes with an extra $18M to $20M in commercial cash.” NBC Sports President Rick Cordella confirms as much: “It’s not just to get people to watch on Saturday night. It’s to get people to watch and experience all this various content that we have across the Peacock service, whether it’s Universal Films or library content like The Office and Parks and Rec.” NFL EVP of Media Distribution Hans Schroeder adds that while the league will always be concerned about reach, it also plans to keep “expanding on digital and growing our presence on the screens and in the places and platforms where we know our fans are spending their time.” (link)

The Consumer Price Index grew at an annual rate of 3.4% in December, a 0.3% rise from the 3.1% annual inflation in November, and 0.2% more than the 3.2% economists expected, according to information from the U.S. Labor Department. BankRate Chief Financial Analyst Greg McBride: “Inflation, as measured by the CPI, is moving in the right direction, but this release should squash any notion investors had of a March rate cut from the Fed.” (link)
