Iowa AD Beth Goetz joins the Front Office Sports podcast to discuss the experience of watching Caitlin Clark and this year’s women’s basketball team and how the Hawkeyes plan to seize that momentum moving forward. Goetz explains that “anytime you're trying to attract fans it's always intentional, whether in football or baseball or women's basketball. So there's work you do around the outside to showcase what you have coming in. But how can you not watch the game and be entertained? I mean, they've seen an incredibly high level of basketball here at Iowa. There are other stars across the country right now and so those games are really intriguing. You’re seeing upsets. This is probably the deepest women's basketball NCAA tournament we're going to have an opportunity to see. And I think people are going to be excited about that. … And I think we've invited others in, and they've seen what you have to offer and they're going to want to continue to support the game.” Goetz also discusses the Dartmouth men’s basketball team’s unionization vote and it’s important to continue elevating student-athletes’ voices, “and the question just is in what format is that going to look? So, we're all anxiously following and engaging in those conversations and we're excited that we're going to be able to find some resolution.” Full podcast. (link)

New Mexico AD Eddie Nuñez Q&As with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer as the two discuss the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee, which Nuñez chairs, and how he communicates with university leadership and coaches on the scope of that project. Nuñez also talks in depth about the process of making a coaching change in football, the evaluation process leading up to that and the metrics for evaluating a good fit for New Mexico. Nuñez on how he positioned UNM to Football HC Bronco Mendenhall: “I'm very straightforward. I don’t sugarcoat it in any way. I try to tell everybody what to expect, what we're about, what the challenges are, because I don't want anyone to come in a month later to say I didn't know. … I want to express to them my expectation, I want to express to them the alignment and what opportunities weren’t taken advantage of in the past that he or she can. I think people always ask, ‘Eddie, are you going to be there for the duration of this coach?’ And I don't sugarcoat that answer either. I'm very straightforward with them.” Full interview now live on Connect. (link)

Learfield EVP for NIL Growth & Development Solly Fulp sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at 2024 PACnet to discuss the company’s approach to NIL based on its longstanding relationships with brands and collegiate partners. As the caretaker of all commercial IP rights for hundreds of institutions, Fulp asserts that Learfield is the largest in the landscape in terms of corporate engagement activity and has the “people power” to support sales, activation and fulfillment needs on the ground, making it an attractive partner in the development of an NIL deal. Fulp notes NIL partnerships are far more impactful when student-athletes are permitted to use their schools’ marks and IP, and he believes brand loyalty and the value of universities’ IP will be unaffected by any potential changes in governance models. “Even with all these transactions you can never take away those experiences that you have at your respective university. Now, you're going to see more transitions and transfers happening with the student-athletes, but I think that the university fanbases will still be entrenched in their universities and I think that brands recognize that.” More from Fulp, including his thoughts on the power of storytelling and the importance of securing the right brand when marketing and promoting a student-athlete’s personal story via an NIL partnership. Pac-12 schools posted a 3-0 record on Thursday of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament to go along with two units Colorado collected by winning its First Four and opening round matchups. All told, Washington State and Oregon State will receive $18M over the next six years, money that JohnCanzano.com’s namesake notes will be added to a “growing war chest that the two schools could use for a rebuild.” That money could be particularly important following last week’s initial reports indicating WSU and OSU would only receive $360K each in the new College Football Playoff deal; however, Canzano notes: “That’s where Commissioner Teresa Gould went to work. The new Pac-12 commissioner spent the subsequent 72 hours convincing the other parties that her two-member conference was worth $3.6M per school (in the first three years of the agreement).” Canzano points out that “subsequent distributions depend on what shape the conference takes in a rebuild or where the two schools land. And lots of people wonder if college football will even look the same by then. There is a provision in the new CFP contract, I’m told, that allows ‘Power 4’ members who move to another league to take their revenue share with them. If the ACC splinters, it could be beneficial for the Pac-12, but wouldn’t necessarily guarantee an increase in playoff TV money.” (link)

Inside Lacrosse’s Terry Foy makes the optimistic case for the sport’s future despite worries about what the myriad challenges facing the industry may portend for sports outside of football and basketball. Foy starts with the premise that FBS will “privatize” and move out of the existing athletic department structure where the players are employees and not required to attend the institution. And “in a world in which football players are not part of a tax-exempt athletic department, they may not count toward proportionality with respect to Title IX compliance. And in that world, all the athletic directors I’ve spoken to over the years who’ve said, ‘If I were whiteboarding my department, I would absolutely have men’s and women’s lacrosse,’ would finally have the ability to do so. And in a world in which driving male enrollment is increasingly important and the appeal of, on average, 37 tuitions being paid from the men’s lacrosse team has greater and greater value, they would have the incentive to do so, as well.” Foy acknowledges, however, that it’s not a given that football players in this scenario would, in fact, exist outside Title IX requirements. Therefore, Foy concludes: “The future of college lacrosse, specifically Division I lacrosse (and more specifically men’s Division I lacrosse) may be very grim. But it may also be brighter than it currently is. I don’t know.” (link)

UCF’s proposed expansion of FBC Mortgage Stadium is scheduled to begin in December and be completed before the start of the 2026 football season, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel, who also reports the UCF Board of Trustees has planned a retreat for this week to discuss the project’s financials and updated plans. Also from Murschel: “According to documents, the Roth Tower renovations will include 1,236 club seats, 34 loge boxes, 34 skybays and 25 luxury suites. The project, which involves expanding approximately 58K square feet, is estimated to cost $88M. The club seating area will increase by 40% to approximately 16K square feet as it grows from 900 to 1,236 seats. Luxury suites will increase from 25 to 59 and the school plans to offer a level of ‘sky cribs’ that will provide fans with an open-air patio suite with upscale food, beverage, beer and wine. The expanded premium seating options will help the school generate $2.4M in new revenue annually.” Design and development are projected to be complete by September. (link)

Buffalo Wild Wings, which has some experience in executing fast NIL deals during March Madness, did so again last week by signing Grambling State men’s basketball student-athlete Jimel Cofer Jr. to an agreement less than 24 hours after the Tigers beat Montana State in the First Four. Sportico’s Dylan Manfre points out the one common element among these NIL deals is overtime. “The company has made overtime a critical piece of its college sports advertising and is connected to the company’s Overtime Wingtime promotion, which gives fans six free wings if a tournament game goes into overtime. According to chief marketing officer Tristan Meline, in addition to Cofer, the company signed Kansas women’s guard Zakiyah Franklin to an NIL deal four hours after the No. 8 Jayhawks defeated No. 9 Michigan in overtime, and No. 9 Northwestern guard Brooks Barnhizer six hours after his Wildcats defeated No. 8 Florida Atlantic in overtime.” The deals last for the duration of the tournament and are offered to men’s and women’s student-athletes who make big plays in OT or to send a game to OT. The players are offered financial compensation, apparel and wings. The company did not provide financial details or specifics on how they reach the players after the game. (link)

Congrats to Penn State, which took home its third straight and 11th national championship under Head Coach Cael Sanderson since 2011. The Nittany Lions claimed four individual championships in Kansas City, bringing the all-time tally to 59, 38 of which have come under Sanderson’s leadership. (link)

Congratulations, as well, to the Virginia Women’s Swimming & Diving team, which defended its national title for a fourth straight year, becoming the third program to ever do so. Head Coach Todd DeSorbo: “I’m not sure I can put it into words. It’s really hard to digest even that we won. I told the girls before the session tonight that there are only nine teams, I think, that have ever won one national championship, and we are one of nine. And when you have 70 teams at a national championship, you know, that’s pretty impressive in and of itself. So it’s just wild. I really can’t put words to it. I’m just really proud of them and happy for them. And this one was a lot of fun.” (link)

Vanderbilt AD Candice Lee joins the Two Percent Podcast to discuss her 20+ years with the Commodores, following in the footsteps of former AD David Williams, the challenges associated with overseeing an athletic department today and lots more, including the university’s decision to change its logo. The change caused some uproar among fans, but Lee explains the decision was made within a larger context – uniting the entire university under one visual identity – which she acknowledges the school could’ve done a better job explaining. “This is important to me as the athletic director that whether it is the athletics version of the V or it’s the V you get when you got your diploma, we’re all the same and we're all worthy of the Vanderbilt brand. And athletics is not separate, athletics is a part of it.” Lee also discusses her leadership style and philosophy on engaging with coaches: “You can be the kind of athletic director that's just not going to really have personal relationships or kind of be at arm's length with your coaches because maybe that makes it a little easier if you need to be objective. Or you’re going to be relationship-oriented, but you’re going to know that when it comes time to do what you think is right for the university, you’ve got to trust yourself to do it.” Lee says she identifies with the latter and adds: “That relationship between AD and head coach is paramount to me, and I spend a lot of time cultivating those relationships because I know their positions are hard, and it's lonely, and if nobody else understands, I want them to know that I do.” Full podcast. Fiesta Bowl Executive Director/CEO Erik Moses sat down with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer from the 2024 NCAA Convention. Moses shares his thoughts on bowl opt-outs, NIL, the impact of the expanded College Football Playoff on the Fiesta Bowl and more. Moses acknowledges that opt-outs are a big deal and tells Fischer: “Very difficult for us to have any way to weigh in on that process. We’re kind of waiting around for players and coaches and teams to tell us who's going to play and who's not. I think as an enterprise of college football we need to think about ways to curb opt-outs. It’s no different than we talk about load management in the NBA. You’re taking your kid to see his favorite team play, and his favorite player is not going to play because he's doing load management. The fans want to see the players that they've watched all season, and while I understand that players will make individual considerations about their future and playing on the next level, I think the data will show that you're no more likely to be injured in a bowl game than you are in any other game.” Should bowls be allowed to offer NIL deals in the future, Moses isn’t sure how much it will impact opt-outs. “I'm not certain that if a player has decided, ‘I'm going to go high in NFL draft and that's worth $40M in the contract to me,’ what's the number we have to wave in front of them for him to play one more game. And I'm not certain that we can ever get on top of that.” (link)

The NCAA swapped one of the officials at halftime of the Chattanooga vs. NC State women's basketball game on Saturday because of a "background conflict." The NCAA statement on the situation: “There was a switch of game officials at halftime of the Chattanooga-NC State first-round game because it was learned after the game had started that Umpire 2 Tommi Paris had a background conflict that, if known, would prevent her from working that assigned game.” The NCAA asks all officials who are being considered for the NCAA tournament to disclose school affiliations to avoid potential conflicts, but Paris’ master’s degree from Chattanooga was not disclosed. Paris was replaced by Angelica Suffren, who had worked the session’s earlier game in Raleigh, despite Danielle Jackson being listed as the game’s standby official. The decision to use Suffren was made “because it provided the most on-court experience and allowed the game to maintain a full officiating crew, plus standby,” per the NCAA. (link)

LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey has threatened legal action against The Washington Post, saying the paper has spent two years pursuing a “hit piece” about her and gave her an unreasonable deadline this past week to answer questions. Mulkey: “The lengths [Post reporter Kent Babb] has gone to try to put a hit piece together. After two years of trying to get me to sit with him for an interview, he contacts LSU on Tuesday as we were getting ready for the first-round game of this tournament with more than a dozen questions, demanding a response by Thursday, right before we're scheduled to tip off. Are you kidding me? This was a ridiculous deadline that LSU and I could not possibly meet, and the reporter knew it. It was just an attempt to prevent me from commenting and an attempt to distract us from this tournament. It ain't going to work, buddy. … I'm fed up, and I'm not going to let The Washington Post attack this university, this awesome team of young women I have, or me without a fight. I've hired the best defamation law firm in the country, and I will sue The Washington Post if they publish a false story about me. Not many people are in a position to hold these kinds of journalists accountable, but I am, and I'll do it.” More, including Mulkey accusing Babb of tricking her former assistant coaches into speaking with him and former players saying Babb offered to make their comments anonymous if they would say negative things about Mulkey. Prosek Partners Managing Director/Head of Sports Jon Schwartz makes the case for private equity’s involvement in college sports and insists the image of “corporate raiders taking stock of blue-chip programs, replacing athletic directors with their lackeys, paying student-athletes in the non-revenue-generating sports minimum wage, and selling off lacrosse and hockey equipment for quick and easy returns” is not an accurate portrayal of what PE can achieve in the industry. Rather, “these investors can assist universities in developing policies and programs that promote fairness, transparency, and compliance. PE investment represents a potentially transformative force in collegiate athletics—one that offers a strategic and sustainable approach to addressing longstanding questions and embracing emerging opportunities. … By helping the colleges and universities that choose to leave their respective conferences cover those associated costs (as well as funding student-athlete salaries should this become inevitable), these businesses can add a certain steadying professionalism to these efforts, lessening the unintended consequences of NIL and the transfer portal.” Schwartz acknowledges PE firms wouldn’t be doing this as a philanthropic exercise: “There’s real money to be made in this business. The numbers surrounding TV contracts for conference rights are immense, and the potential returns that can be generated from long-term media rights agreements, ticket sales, licensing, and sponsorships are promising. Embracing PE involvement in college sports may feel antithetical to the spirit of the student-athlete. But the current state of play is unsustainable.” (link)

ESPN’s Michael Fletcher examines the epidemic of basketball coaches leaving the coaching box, noting that the problem became so noticeable this season that NCAA National Coordinator of Men’s Basketball Officiating Chris Rastatter issued a memo “strongly reminding them that coaches should not venture out of the coaching box or onto the court for any reason during live play.” Collegiate Basketball Officials Association Executive Director Tom O’Connor tells Fletcher: "When I officiated, I would lean more toward leniency. … I think there are other parts of the game that officials feel like they want to control. As long as we respect the game, I think everybody wants to coexist." Fletcher notes social media has made it easier for coaching box violations to circulate and cites a video of Texas A&M MBB HC Buzz Williams nearly colliding with a Tennessee player as he ventured onto the “middle of the court” to call a timeout. After the game, Vols HC Rick Barnes remarked: “I guess what I will start telling my players is if somebody's on the court just run over them so that way it's an obvious technical foul. But you don't want to do that. I don't want anybody to get hurt. But it just can't happen." Williams was issued a warning but no technical; however, SEC officials reached out to UT after the game to acknowledge the play was handled incorrectly by the referees. With enforcement of the rule likely to be under scrutiny during March Madness, one former official tells Fletcher that “those [officials who ignore it], you don't typically see deep into the tournament." Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart dismisses the idea that coaches are trying to bolt the college ranks and says of former Alabama HC Nick Saban’s retirement: “I think there’s been a lot of media portrayal that [the changing landscape] had something to do [with him retiring]. The man was in his 70s.” Smart adds: “I don’t have a lot of coaches complaining, saying they want to get out of the profession. They enjoy the profession. They want the profession to be about relationships, developing talent and rewarding positive performance, both on and off the field. … There’s certainly higher stakes and higher pay than there’s ever been for college coaches, across the board. I mean the guys making money and making livings that coordinators can retire now, they don’t have to get a head job. You look back even 10 years ago and how much it’s changed for coaches. There’s no crying out there from my end. I want what’s best for the student-athlete.” Smart questions the system currently in place because “it’s not necessarily best for the sophomore, junior or senior. It may be best for the freshman. But it may not be best for the sophomore, junior or senior. I would love to see a little more fair system for the players in terms of within the players.” (link)
