An unnamed UH source tells Duarte: “We’re not at any direction right now. We’re just going to look and see what’s out there.” (link)

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Scoop Jackson questions the motives of developments at Northwestern: “And while this can be looked at as a new start in the way Northwestern presented it or as a Gragg ‘demotion’ as my colleague Steve Greenberg wrote it, what it really looks like is a power move that’s routed in the politics of the building of an over three quarters of a billion dollars stadium. That’s all coming from private money. That’s what the timing of all of this says. That’s what neither the media or the university really want to talk about. That’s probably what’s really going on. See, they not like us. And he not like them. But the real question is who inside Northwestern is allowing the media to tell lies about them about the lies the media feels they are telling us?” (link)

“I think that the response has been very positive. I think people believe that we’re down the right path. We understand we’re not at the finish line. Nobody has suggested that this is the final version of this model. I think that there’s an understanding that we need to be proactive on this and we can’t sit and wait for somebody else to try to point us in the direction or create the pathway for us.” That’s Eastern Illinois AD Tom Michael on the proposal submitted by the FCS & DI-AAA leadership group on sustainability models for the industry. More from Michael: “We kind of joked like, what we’re talking about here isn’t some novel approach. It’s really what we all got into this for and trying to bring it back to its roots of this model that’s centered around education. We kind of laughed and were like, ‘Wow, that’s a novel idea.’” (link)

More from Louisville’s budget meetings yesterday as Cards AD Josh Heird noted coming scholarship changes for some sports in light of the House settlement. Also from Heird on new revenue opportunities & positive hoops vibes: “For me, nothing's off the table. Let's have a conversation about it. You know, some ideas are going to work. Some of them are not going to work. I think one of the big things that we want to try to do as we move forward is — as opposed to creating donor fatigue by saying, 'Hey, we need some money’ — we want to try to create a more comprehensive package. This is what this athletic department needs to operate. This is the expense tied to it. I'm talking to the donor and the fan. And you know, we just approved football season ticket prices for next year. This is an industry that we know what it's going to cost to operate now, right? So how do we come up with that revenue to operate at the level our fans expect us to. [...] There's some presumptions there that basketball is going to do better than it's done the last couple of years. But as I say, if you're not going to be an optimist in this job, then why are you doing this job? I think it's a realistic budget and allows our head coaches and all of our department heads to stay within the budgets that we've outlined for them. I think we're in a good position." (link)

New James Madison AD Matt Roan notes the Dukes have surpassed 7,000 donors for the first time in department history and have sold out of football season tickets for the second straight year. Also from Roan: “Interest in this university and our athletics program has never been higher, as evident by application numbers, donations, campus visits, ticket sales, licensing, corporate sponsorship and more. Job candidates increasingly cite JMU as a place on the rise. … In August, we anticipate that JMU will receive its letter from the NCAA that it has completed its reclassification to the FBS level. This is another key moment in a line of transformational steps for this program.” (link)

Hawaii AD Craig Angelos reflects on his first year of leadership in Honolulu: “What I’ve tried to do this first year is look and listen and find out what has been going on and see what’s going well, continue that. If things need an adjustment or a change, then try to find a solution for that, too. I’ve done that for the whole year, looked under every rock and opened every aspect of the department. Things are going well. I’ve moved on, and things that have needed adjustment, I’ve tried to hone in on that. It’s been a good experience. [...] Some of the challenges I’ve seen, which is the same as almost any place in college athletics: The challenge of the financial structure. Being able to raise money, being able to sell tickets, get revenue sources. That’s been probably the biggest challenge, is trying to look at things like how do we raise our fundraising model. How can we improve our ticket sales model? Our licensing model, how do we monetize our assets that we have? That’s the name of the game in college athletics. When you talk to the athletic directors I’ve been around lately, it’s about, ‘How do we monetize these assets at our university?’ Because it’s never enough, and that’s what we have to do here: Continue to try to monetize our assets and put out a good product, continue to represent the school and state well. But all that takes money.” (link)

East Tennessee State AD Richard Sander talks about the positioning of the Bucs amid industry change: “We’re really excited about where we are. Nobody knows exactly where things are going in the changing landscape of college sports, but I think we’re positioned nicely. We have a vision to serve our student-athletes and also to serve the university. We’ve got a lot of momentum.” Sander also talks about the challenges of leadership selection: “It’s the most difficult thing you can do as an athletic director. You’re affecting people’s lives. You have great people, but my job is what’s best for the university and the region. It’s never pleasant to make those hard decisions. If you’re not getting it done, it affects the players too. We have to set a standard as what’s acceptable. Unfortunately, you’re not winning enough games. If you see a path forward, you can take a little more time. When you don’t see that, you have to make that very difficult decision.” (link)

Norfolk State Track & Field student-athlete Kai Cole’s automatic qualifying time for the US Olympic Trials was rejected by the United States Track and Field (USATF) organization because the event he ran the qualifying time in, the 2024 MEAC championships, was not sanctioned by the USATF. NSU’s statement, in part: “Kai had earned the well-deserved opportunity to represent his country on the international stage, showcasing his exceptional talent and unwavering dedication. It is truly disheartening that he will not be able to pursue his dream of competing on one of the world’s biggest platforms this year. … As a department, Norfolk State Athletics stands firmly behind Kai during this difficult time. We will continue to provide unwavering support as he navigates these challenges and works towards his goals. Together, we will overcome this setback and emerge stronger than ever.” The MEAC’s response, in part: “Although the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship remains an official NCAA Division-I championship event, USATF policy changes implemented this year resulted in the event not being officially sanctioned by USATF, making all competition results ineligible for Olympic Trial qualification. We understand Kai’s frustration and took all available steps to rectify the situation so he could compete in the Olympic Trials – an opportunity he clearly deserves. The MEAC fully supports our member institutions and student-athletes as they pursue their dreams and strive for excellence.” For his part, Cole released a statement via social media expressing his disappointment and voicing that his school didn’t “fully support” his effort to get the decision overturned. YouTube Global Head of Sports Partnerships Jon Cruz this week joined the Streamtime Sports podcast to discuss YouTube’s strategy around live sports rights, subscription channels, and future possibilities with sports creators and pay-per-view and said: “What we are trying to do at YouTube is build optionality for our partners. It is very important to us to make sure that we have all of the content, sports or otherwise, that our users…are looking for. And in order to do that, we recognize that we are going to have to provide rights holders, broadcasters, with different business models, be it ad-supported, be it subscription.” Cruz also points out that with the Sunday Ticket, YouTube worked closely with the NFL to develop exclusive content, footage for its creators and a new-look product. “We wanted to make sure that the experience felt like YouTube and that we weren’t just putting our logo to a stream that was coming from elsewhere. We were able to really partner with our creators to bring fans closer to the game, and also to allow our creators to use NFL IP to create content, to tell stories around the game, be those stories.” More from Cruz. Memphis President Bill Hardgrave is believed to be targeting the end of next week for a formal announcement of the Tigers’ next AD, according to the Commercial Appeal’s Jason Munz, who reports that Interim AD Jeff Crane, Tennessee Deputy AD/Chief Resource Officer Ryan Alpert, Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt and Kansas State Alumni Association President/CEO Adam Walker “have emerged as the most serious contenders for the job. … This comes after a round of interviews this week that also included Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White, Virginia Deputy AD Ed Scott and Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison.” Also from Munz: “Crane, whose interview took place Tuesday, according to sources, has been considered a frontrunner since the process began when AD Laird Veatch left for Missouri in April. He has been consistently open about his desire to be named the permanent AD.” (link)

More from freshly minted Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller, who says: “I wanted to be an AD at the right place, with the right fit, with the right leadership, and the right resources around me that I could be successful and the university and athletics department could be successful. Being two-and-a-half hours down the road for a while, I watched this program and I watched this university grow, I watched the success that was happening here, and I always told Lauren if this job ever came open, this is one I was going to run to.” Miller explains he plans to build a successful culture by promoting continuity and collaboration: “It’s important to me that the university and athletics department are one, and we’re all moving in the same direction. I did that at South Carolina and I know I can do it here. You want to expand that reach, and that’s the way we can do it, by bringing everyone together and working toward a common goal.” Also: “I have audacious goals. I told everybody on the search committee, and those goals are out there and we will get there. It will be a lot of work, it will be a lot of time and a lot of effort, but I promise you we will get there. … We’re going to innovate. I love to be the first one to do it, and that is more important than ever in this ever-changing world of college athletics. We have to be nimble and we have to innovate, and we will do that. I want people to look at Coastal Carolina and say, ‘How in the world did they do that, and how do we copy it?’" (link)

The NCAA Thursday asked the NLRB for permission to file an amicus brief in support of Dartmouth, arguing that the men’s basketball team’s attempt to become employees will “affect and have a far-reaching impact” on all “current and future” college athletes and “the NCAA membership as a whole.” According to Sportico’s Michael McCann, “if the NLRB accepts the NCAA’s 32-page amicus brief, the agency’s board will see that, like Dartmouth, the NCAA portrays the ‘unprecedented’ nature of college athletes as employees in a problematic light.” The NCAA further contends the recognition of a single team as a bargaining unit would destabilize labor relations and emphasizes that NLRB cases involving pro sports have involved “league-wide bargaining units” rather than one team. McCann: “This type of argument has resonated with the NLRB in the past,” particularly in the Northwestern case a decade ago. “The NCAA finds itself in a tricky spot arguing that employment would harm college sports given that the NCAA hopes to settle three antitrust cases (House v. NCAA, Carter v. NCAA and Hubbard v. NCAA) in part by adopting a pay-for-play model. The settlement, which is not yet finalized and requires approval by U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken, contemplates colleges, like teams in a pro league, being able to pay athletes in a salary cap and revenue-sharing framework.” SEIU Local 560 President Chris Peck asserts this is a “simple case of disguised employment where the Regional Director followed established precedent and applied the law as intended.” (link)

Ohio State expects to report an operating deficit of more than $10M for the fiscal year, according to the Columbus Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman, who notes the shortfall is seen as “largely the result of last fall’s reduced slate of home football games.” OSU played just six games in Columbus in 2023 and Kaufman points out that a few factors “tilt in Ohio State’s favor in the months ahead.” For instance, the football schedule features eight home games, and though it does “not include a marquee non-conference opponent," it does include a November 30 visit from Michigan. WDRB’s Eric Crawford reports from the Louisville Athletic Association’s meeting and notes football ticket sales generated $26.2M, men’s basketball tickets were $1.9M short of budget, the ACC Network studio on campus exceeded revenue projections by $400K and the university provided $5M to “offset significant one-time costs,” and the Cardinals went $1.5M over the initial travel budget. Unbudgeted costs for the fiscal year included a final payout to Papa John’s Founder John Schnatter of $2M, a $1.1M buyout to Charleston for hiring Men’s Basketball HC Pat Kelsey, credit card fees that went $540K over budget and $400K on the ACC Championship game in football. Budget challenges for next season include having only six home football games, six road trips to California, inflation and new NCAA rules, such as paying for more family members on recruiting trips, etc. Upcoming revenue goals include increasing football season ticket sales by 10% to 40K, increasing men’s basketball season tickets by 30% to 12K, and selling out one football game, among others. Arizona outlines its five-point plan to reduce its $33.6M athletics shortfall, per the Arizona Daily Star’s Bruce Pascoe. The plan includes $500K annually in decreased leadership personnel costs and a streamlined organizational chart, paying back its loans “in accordance with future net revenue instead of paying them back on a fixed schedule,” shifting some athletics costs to the university’s general budget and more. Interim CFO John Arnold projects $9.1M in extra revenue through development and parking, a $2.5M cut in operations, $3.1M in expense transfers for utilities and security and $26.5M in FY25 “by eliminating a $7.1 million administrative service charge that the university was charging and by ‘rebasing’ its debt.” On the revenue side, consultants from Ernst & Young recommended maximizing dynamic pricing opportunities and reducing the amount of complimentary tickets, with AD Desiree Reed-Francois noting “that 54% of UA’s revenue was in their control.” More. Sooners Illustrated’s Tom Green reports the deal is worth a total of $51.6M with average annual compensation of $8.6M, including $8.15M in 2024 ($7.225M + plus an annual installment of $600K that goes toward retirement). (link, link)

UMass also added $600K to the AC pool and has three assistants now paid between $240K-$350K. If Martin leaves, he would owe UMass $1.25M initially. That total drops to $625K by the final year. If UMass terminates the deal without cause, it would owe Martin $4M initially with subsequent decreases to under $1M in the final year. (link)
