San Diego State’s MBB Final Four run “removed any lingering doubt about their credentials for Pac-12 membership,” according to The Mercury News’ Wilner, who contends that “the university presidents who run the conference have no choice — none, zero, zip — but to invite the Aztecs. … The Aztecs would join the conference as one of its two or three best programs, a tick below Arizona, perhaps, but alongside Oregon. And it’s not like they would lower the caliber of the Pac-12 football product, either.” Beyond the Aztecs’ ability to compete, make a financial impact and align institutionally with the league, Wilner submits that the “Pac-12 desperately needs a win, folks. Not a win on the court or on the field. A win where it matters most: In the realm of public opinion. … Adding SDSU in the immediate afterglow of its run to the Final Four would be perceived as a victory. As a move that makes sense in the short-term and over the long haul.” (link)

Some history in this year’s MBB Final Four: It’s the first time three teams are making their debut in the semis since 1970. (link); This is also the first Final Four without a one, two or three seed, per NCAA Director of Media Coordination/Statistics Worlock. (link); And ESPN’s Borzello notes this is the first Final Four without a single former McDonald's All-American since the NCAA tournament began seeding teams in 1979. (link)

North Carolina AD Cunningham sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Brown for a conversation about a “coaches-led” athletic department in which the culture, tone and values are set by the HCs on staff. “The coaches are really the ones that lead the department. It started with Coach Smith, Coach Williams took over, and they’re the ones that really share their wealth of knowledge with the other coaches.” Cunningham also discusses the importance of staying agile in the industry’s current landscape, saying the objective is “preserving the core and stimulating change,” adding: “I think that’s the challenge of all leaders, to not get stale.” As it relates to the current environment: “How do we maintain some type of competitive equity? What are we doing to do about compensation? What are we going to do about acquisition and retention of talent? Those are the main topics that we need to really wrestle with right now and figure out how do we do that. … Economics change, times change, we need to figure out how we’re going to support our student-athletes in a new environment.” Full interview. In parsing his MBB team’s SOS, Clemson AD Neff wonders whether the Tigers would’ve been better off losing to TCU rather than beating Cal in the second game of the Emerald Coast Classic in November. “Maybe we don’t win that game (against TCU), so we’re 22-11 (instead of 23-10). But the metrics of that, does that sway the NET and the strength of schedule? You can’t help but question that at this point.” Tigers HC Brownell adds: “We didn’t schedule that to get a 300 RPI game. It just fell in our lap.” Neff expects non-conference scheduling to be a hot topic during the offseason. “I do think, as a league, we’re going to take some time and talk to the commissioner in these next coming weeks and in our spring meetings where head coaches and (athletic directors) are together and whether we bring in some experts or otherwise just to kind of talk on some of the analytics of it. That’s absolutely needed.” (link)

USA Today’s Wolken breaks down the challenge faced by Texas AD Del Conte on his MBB leadership situation. As Wolken points out “it will look like a classic case of Texas being Texas, thinking it’s too good to hire an interim who had a 163-156 record as a head coach at Fresno State and UTEP and chasing after a shiny object just because they have more money than the Vatican.” But on the other hand, Wolken contends the “idea that Texas owes this job to Terry because of what he did this season stepping in for Chris Beard is equally as foolish. This is the bottom line: If Del Conte does not believe Terry is the person who can take Texas where it wants to go, then he shouldn’t hire him permanently. But if he envisions Terry leading a program that regularly plays in Elite Eights and Final Fours, then he might as well finalize the contract tomorrow.” (link)

Newly named Wichita State MBB HC Mills’ contract is for up to $8.5M over five years. Additionally, beginning after his second season, Mills will earn a retention bonus each July 1, which will increase from $50K to $100K over the final three years. If the Shockers win 25 games, clinch a conference regular season title or secure a conference tournament title, Mills receives an automatic one-year extension. If WSU lets Mills go without cause in the first three years of his contract, he will receive 100% of the remaining balance of the guaranteed compensation and “other” compensation owed to him. After that, he would receive 75%. If Mills were to leave before April 15, 2024, he would owe the university $1.5M plus repayment of his Oral Roberts buyout. That figure decreases by $250K each year. D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle sits down with Arkansas Baseball AC Hobbs (pitching coach) and Wake Forest AHC Cilento (hitting coach) to examine the surge in home runs this season. Hobbs and Cilento agree that technological advancements play a role, with Hobbs noting that TrackMan data has changed the evaluation of the strike zone and ultimately shrunk it. There are also more older student-athletes in college baseball due to COVID and the contraction of MiLB teams. Cilento adds that combination of a smaller strike zone and available technology also allows coaches to better prepare hitters. Moreover, the increased availability and decreased cost make the technology available to teams other than those with the biggest budgets. Lots more in the full Q&A on Connect. (link)

College basketball staffs are changing to keep pace with new trends, particularly NIL and the transfer portal, as the AP’s Beard observes, and Houston MBB HC Sampson confirms, saying; “I have people on my staff in charge of something with one of our kids 24 hours a day. And it’s all built around relationships. You know, these kids can transfer today and not even have to tell the coach. They can just go to the compliance office. … So in order to combat those kinds of things, it’s more and more important that you’re involved in their daily lives.” Kansas State Director of Strategies Sutton, who helps deal with roster management in the era of the transfer portal, says: “It’s the college version of free agency and it’s something that goes on all the time and it continues to grow on a daily basis. We have to retain our players. … So having a larger to staff to be able to be involved in the current players’ lives and then have an eye on what’s happening outside of your program in terms of the transfer portal.” (link)

Companies are taking different approaches to capitalizing on the exposure of March Madness via NIL deals, per Forbes’ Dosh, who finds that some had “campaigns ready to go before the tournaments began, while others have been sitting on the sidelines waiting to see which programs and athletes emerge as this year’s biggest stories.” Meanwhile, student-athletes are more prepared than they were last year, according to Influential CEO Detert, who tells Dosh: “Though they are in the midst of what is likely the craziest week of their young lives, they should be documenting their journey on their social media channels and letting brands see who they are, both on and off the court. March Madness makes instant folk heroes and brands want to be able to align themselves with these athletes and their feel-good stories.” (link)

Inflation has supplanted the supply chain as the biggest challenge for sports merchandising licensees, SBJ’s Lefton reports from the NFL Consumer Products Summit. Memory Company owner Sizemore: “You’re seeing hefty pricing at retail and interest rates going through the roof. Everyone in this business must carry tons of inventory, along with accounts receivable. When the cost of money is increasing, we’re all getting hurt. It looks like consumer demand is still good, but we’re all wondering how much you can push retail pricing without affecting that.” Meanwhile, UPI Marketing Founder/CEO Smith explains many have switched to domestic suppliers, noting that “you may pay more domestically, but it pencils out in terms of being able to produce on demand, and how long you have to tie up money to manufacture and ship from Asia.” (link)

A study published in Frontiers in Public Health analyzed data from 7,209 people aged 16 to 85 living in England and found that attending a live sporting event made for higher self-reported scores on life satisfaction and lower scores on loneliness. The researchers were quick to point out the connection isn’t conclusively causal but say the correlation is worth exploring further. Anglia Ruskin University School of Psychology Head Keyes: “Our findings could be useful for shaping future public health strategies, such as offering reduced ticket prices for certain groups.” (link)

Cal Men’s Swimming & Diving took home its second straight NCAA title yesterday. Golden Bears HC Durden: “It was an interesting meet. We didn't have a lot of highlights. We were setting internal highlights, setting school records right and left. But we weren't winning events - which is great, it's a team meet and so we just went out trying to garner points. A majority of the points were spread out amongst six teams which makes it exciting for the fans. I'm so appreciative of this group and handling themselves and handling our program and understanding that this is only about this year but it is about the legacy of Cal Aquatics. They get that. They understand that and I couldn't be more proud to be a part of that.” (link)

Latest from San Diego State AD Wicker on potential conference realignment that could impact the Aztecs: “We'll be ready to step into a Power 5 conference if we get that opportunity. I think basketball goes in with no problem. Football probably takes a little bit just from depth and things like that. But I'm not worried about us not being able to go right in and be competitive.” SDSU MBB HC Dutcher on USC & UCLA’s looming travel demands in the Big Ten: “Even though [our flight] was a charter, I thought, my goodness, those guys have to do this every other week to play a basketball game? It would be exhausting. It's going to be a real challenge to be at their best with that kind of travel. I'm wishing them all the best, but that's more travel than I would ever wish on anybody.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Phillips plans to meet with league ADs & MBB HCs in the very near future to discuss being more “proactive” & “aggressive” with the conference’s hoops brand & narrative. Phillips to ESPN’s Adelson: “We feel the narrative hasn't been quite right the last two years. We're going to try to do something about that in the offseason. [...] We're paying too much attention to the NET. I'm just not there on that. It does not reward teams that play 20 conference games versus 18 or less, and so that's one of the things I'm hopeful in the future we don't spend more time on or put more credence to it. I think it deserves less. In the end, the greatest thing we have in that committee is the eye test, and I think that's been ignored. [...] This new day of college basketball is really present, and the influx of roster changes really does differentiate between a team that's returning seven or eight in the fall versus somebody that has seven or eight new players that's going to look quite different at the end of the year.” (link)

Fox Sports/Connect’s Fischer sits down with Binghamton AD Marshall to chat on a number of topics, including advice for new NCAA President Baker: “Surround yourself with seasoned professionals that understand athletics and understand all levels and the depth of it. Since he’s a political person by nature and being that he’s a governor, he’s a leader. And then I would just say listen to the students, but listen to the coaches and administrators because I love the student-athletes, but we are still talking about talented young men and women between the ages of 18 and 24, 25. … So, we need to hear their voice, we need to have them as active participants, but we also need to make sure that we as leaders do a better job of leading them because they’re going to be the next leaders of this association. So, we need to set the foundation, we need to give them the proper amount of responsibility so that when they take over our roles they’ll be well-prepared and well-versed.” (link)

Ole Miss FB HC Kiffin reflects on the announcement surrounding his decision to stay in Oxford amid rumors he was heading to Auburn, “We screw up all the time. But when you think you're doing the right thing and then you're really criticized for it -- especially by your own people -- I struggled with that because I feel like I went through a decision-making process that you're supposed to go through. I mean, you got to decide. It's your life and your family's life.” On the timing of Kiffin telling the team he would remain its HC the night before the game against Mississippi State: “I felt that it would have been a distraction to make this big statement 24 hours before the game and making it about me. So, I thought I was doing the right thing by saying, 'OK, I'm going to avoid making this about me, you guys go play. But just so you know, you don't have to sit here and worry that your coach is leaving tomorrow after the game or something. I'm staying, I just haven't made it known publicly.' I told them thinking that's what obviously matters the most, and because we lost it wasn't done right. If we won, nobody would've cared.” (link)

U.S. Federal Judge Morgan indicates that LSU’s concealing of former FB HC Miles’ sexual misconduct probe was potentially criminal. Morgan’s memo, in part: “The burden of establishing a prima facie case of crime for this purpose in the civil discovery context is not great and is certainly less than the standard that a district attorney or other prosecutor would use in pursuing criminal charges,” adding it “is sufficient for the Court to find a purpose of the Board in communicating with Taylor Porter [Law Firm] on May 15, 2013, was to further a crime; namely, concealment of a public record to prevent public disclosure of its contents.” More. Pretty remarkable story from last night’s Florida Atlantic-Kansas State MBB Tourney regional final in Madison Square Garden as Owls radio host LaVicka, who calls games as a one-man show, lost his internet connection in the waning moments of the game. LaVicka: “We got lucky with a K-State layup and then a timeout. I scrambled to grab an ethernet cord from the row behind me while someone held the broadcasting equipment so I could call the final 15 seconds of the game and the day was saved.” (link)

Sportico’s JohnWallStreet observes that institutional betting poses a potential threat to the NCAA and professional sports leagues, and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner partner/former NFL Senior Counsel Mishkin explains: “The way quant hedge funds approach the stock market, you could see a similar approach to sports betting.” Subsequently, Mishkin points out that “the thinking would be that the more money there is on the line from one entity for a single event to happen, the greater the motivation is, and the more money one might be willing to spend, to make sure that outcome occurs.” While it’s not common in the U.S., Mishkin notes there are some sportsbooks in Asia that “offer very thin margins, far better odds than what you’re going to get from the standard U.S. sportsbook, that will take massive wagers from sharp bettors [and institutional clientele] and still turn enormous profits. In fact, by leveraging the information gleaned from those sharp bettors, [those] operators [are able to] improve their own handicapping expertise, which in turn gives them more confidence to accept large wagers at lower margins, unlocking tremendous incremental revenue potential.” JWS: “It would take a paradigm shift to replicate that dynamic in the U.S. But given the revenue potential at stake, one could imagine the market evolving there.” (link)
