Michigan Football HC has accepted the same post with the Los Angeles Chargers. Harbaugh in a statement noted that “My love for Michigan, playing there and coming back to coach there, leaves a lasting impact. I'll always be a loyal Wolverine.” Wolverines AD Warde Manuel says Harbaugh and the school had been discussing a new contract that “would make Jim the highest paid coach in college football. [...] We are working quickly to hire the next head coach for the program and will do everything possible to keep this current staff and team together.” The Detroit News’ Angelique Chengelis reports that Michigan “finally agreed to [the contract language Harbaugh sought] on Wednesday afternoon when Harbaugh was already in the final stage of discussions with the Chargers.” (link, link); Harbaugh’s buyout with Michigan is $1.5M, according to Detroit Free Press’ Kevin Skiver, who notes for comparison that Kalen DeBoer owed Washington $12M for accepting the Alabama job. Kansas State AD Gene Taylor talks about how the Wildcats have been able to retain Football HC Chris Klieman despite multiple overtures from other programs and says it’s “important to have open conversations with your coaches. I want to be able to answer any questions they have. What needs do they have? What can we help them with? What are their concerns? What do they need to be successful? It’s not always money in their own pocket. Sometimes it’s things like additional staffing. Right now it’s help with NIL. You just kind of sit down with them and talk about what we can do to make them stay here and then you go to work.” Taylor says Klieman has only indicated to him once that he was interested in talking with another program, though he declined to identify which program. Still, Taylor acknowledges there have been some nervous moments along the way. “It’s kind of twofold. One, you feel like your guy is doing things right because other people notice. But it is a little nerve-wracking, because a lot of these schools can pay a lot more money than we can. At some point it makes you think he may look at it, but the good news is that hasn’t happened.” (link)

The DI Strategic Vision and Planning Committee discussed several topics at its meeting earlier this month, including a comprehensive review of membership requirements. In its final report, the committee and Football Oversight Committee Membership Subgroup recommended that SVPC conduct a comprehensive review of membership requirements over the next 12 to 24 months. Next steps in the review include SVPC continuing its analysis of the process for institutions to reclassify from DII or DIII to DI to determine whether the reclassification process may benefit from a framework focused on more objective membership standards. The committee will explore a three-year transition process for DII institutions moving to DI and a four-year transition process for those moving from DIII to DI, with the possibility to accelerate the process if elevated objective benchmarks are achieved. Objective membership categories SVPC will continue to explore include academics, athletic staffing, equity, facilities, financial aid, financial viability, health and safety, sports sponsorship and student-athlete services and benefits. SVPC also began initial discussions on whether further adjustments should be made to the process, timeline or requirements for institutions reclassifying from FCS to FBS. SVPC will seek feedback from the FBS Oversight Committee on whether authority over the reclassification process should be transitioned to its purview. More in the full rundown. (link)

Nevada over the past few years has partnered with several brands to create Wolf Pack-branded items, such as chocolate, coffee, barbeque sauce, beer and wine and co-branded credit card. Wolf Pack AD Stephanie Rempe explains that while the financial component is part of the appeal for UNR (the Wolf Pack reported $2.75M in royalties, licensing, advertisement and sponsorships in FY23, up from $2.41M the year prior), “the biggest part of that is the brand and the smaller businesses being able to do something for the Wolf Pack, and that's what they've liked is combining the brand because if you go out and do a sponsorship or something else, it's kind of a different angle. This allows small businesses to create something with us, and then a very small portion of the profits come to the university, but it really gets our brand out. … How do we get people to know we're around, know when our games are, put the flags out and celebrate Wolf Pack Fridays? We need more gear around so you can walk into any cute boutique or some of the bigger stores and see Wolf Pack gear and want to put it on because you want to support your local school and your teams and all of that.” (link)

Iowa Wrestling HC Tom Brands reacts to the most recent developments concerning the state’s investigation into student-athlete gambling and says to a group of journalists: “The way that it’s described, basic liberties were infringed upon. It shouldn’t happen in this country, it shouldn’t happen in the state of Iowa. You know, you want a big story now, where was the urgency to find out the truth when this thing went down and it didn't make sense? That’s what I would say to everybody in this room. Where was the urgency? Now it comes out, now you want a reaction, and I'll just be a real patient guy and we'll see what comes of it. … Where was this urgency to go after when it was a little bit of work – because it would’ve been work.” (link)
|
Iowa State Wrestling HC Kevin Dresser on the same topic: “I knew this thing was a mess and I knew it was mismanaged and I knew it was mishandled, and I'm glad it's coming to light now. I hope all these athletes at Iowa and Iowa State take the state of Iowa to the cleaners. These athletes served really harsh penalties in the NCAA world, probably harsher than I think they should have. But at the same time, I'm not dismissing or minimizing that they made a mistake…but the way that the process went, these kids didn’t have any rights.” He adds: “It’s really hard to be a Division I athlete right now because you get the book thrown at you right away. The media starts throwing the book, and the DCI gave the media the ammunition to throw the book.” (link)

Clemson Baseball HC Erik Bakich tells The Clemson Insider to compete at a high level the program needs $1M in NIL funding to enable everyone on the team to pay their scholarships in full. “It is even more critical because getting a good player with a combination of a scholarship plus NIL, it is just the way it is now and it is just the way the landscape has changed. What has not changed is the total amount of the scholarship which is still allocated from the NCAA. The landscape has changed, but our budget is still the same when it comes to what we have. … I need to be super clear on this. Equivalency sport athletes are using NIL to pay their tuition bill, to pay their cost of attendance. We have players on 25% of a scholarship, 50% scholarship who are looking to get NIL dollars to pay their bills. It is not pay for play. It is to pay your bills.” Even with NIL funding, Bakich notes that “we have student-athletes, baseball players, soccer players, softball players—equivalency sport athletes—who are getting NIL dollars that are not on a full scholarship and getting taxed on those dollars to pay those scholarships. But a scholarship is tax free. It is not income.” Lots more. (link)

UTRGV unveils its new $3M, 4,200-sq-ft Vaqueros Golf Center at Champion Lakes Golf Course, which includes locker rooms for the men's and women's golf programs, two hitting bays, a study lounge, nutrition station, viewing area and coaches' offices. Vaqueros AD Chasse Conque: “We're in the midst of over $85M in construction and the proud thing for all of us is that it's touching every one of our student-athletes and all of our programs, so it makes today even more special knowing that we're celebrating golf and we can continue to celebrate all of our student-athletes as we give them the tools, the facilities, and the resources they need to compete for championships in the very near future." The Big East Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Group met in New York this week to discuss strategies to support the league’s DEI work as well as national developments in the DEI space and shared perspectives on wins, challenges and potential new initiatives to be undertaken at the conference and campus levels. The meeting also included discussion about navigating DEI in the current on-campus political climate, best practices for employee hiring and on-boarding and civic engagement opportunities ahead of the 2024 election. Commissioner Val Ackerman: “We are grateful for the thoughtful ideas, energy and candor of our DE&I Working Group and commend them for their perseverance as we strive to create places of belonging for all members of the Big East community. We remain impressed with the way the group has adapted in an ever-changing environment and will continue to solicit their expertise and guidance as we look to support our student-athletes, coaches and staff in this critical area.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “nearly two months after Project DI’s grand reveal, some of the targets at the center of the proposal – schools in the Power 5 or, better yet, Power 2 – are not in support of the plan. There is disagreement on the proposal’s implementation; discord about the NCAA’s future in general; growing doubts around congressional action, a necessary component to the proposal; and, most notably, further discussion of NCAA secession from schools residing at the highest level of the sport.” Against that backdrop, the Power 5 commissioners will meet with NCAA President Charlie Baker in Washington, D.C., tomorrow “perhaps, to further explore their differences and chart a course — together or apart? — toward rectifying the various unsolved issues in the industry.” While Project DI has been greeted with a frosty reception by P5 leaders overall, Dellenger reports that has been especially true with the Big Ten, where “Baker’s hour-long in-person meeting…turned into a proverbial airing of grievances about the plan itself.” Meanwhile, SEC ADs earlier this month met in person for a “roundtable discussion of sorts” about the future of the industry, and one of those ADs tells Dellenger: “Everything is on the table. That includes a breakaway.” (link)

It’s time for the Pac-12 to part ways with Commissioner George Kliavkoff, according to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake, who agrees with The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner that Kliavkoff is the “zombie commissioner…shuffling around the conference, endlessly in the way. … He continues to hold meetings with staff and conference partners. But the new Pac-12 needs to move on, focus, and conduct business. The commissioner’s presence is a hindrance to the vision of Oregon State, Washington State, and their plan to move forward.” For instance, Canzano notes that the “Pac-12 Network may (or may not) shutter its doors, I’m told. The linear broadcast part of the operation doesn’t appear to have a future. But the production arm, some believe, can continue to operate. As I spoke with sources about the future of that entity, one question came up: Why is Kliavkoff still around? The conference network isn’t working alongside him. It’s working around him.” Kliavkoff’s $8.5M buyout, Canzano acknowledges, is an issue, particularly with the financial problems facing some schools, but “the 12 conference members agreed as part of the settlement to divide all liabilities equally. That’s $708,333 per school. It should get done — now.” (link)

Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach joins the Navigating Sports Business podcast to talk about how the pressing issues in the industry are impacting mid-majors and schools without football. When considering potential conference realignment, Roe Lach says part of her job is to be “thinking about retention” and “ensuring that people feel valued and that we continue to elevate the league. And then second is who might be a good fit if we were to have someone leave, or if the right candidate is available, and we decide to go to 12 because we have been 12 before. So it's both, and as you can imagine, it's pretty sensitive and confidential, so I'm not advertising when I'm potentially visiting with or talking with a potential candidate.” Asked what she would do to fix college sports if she were given a magic wand, Roe Lach says: “We’ve got to figure out, one, how to preserve the 450, and that's why I'm taking your wand. Then, two, I believe for all 500, anyone who's going to say, ‘I'm a college student-athlete’ they’ve got to be actually pursuing an education. … I think NIL is a step in the right direction. That’s not revenue sharing though. That’s just making money off your persona, which I fully support. It’s very capitalist. But what about the direct revenue share? Well, if there’s a way to do that, I think this is where we need Congress’ help. … We’ve got to recognize that there’s a portion of our student-athlete population that deserves something even more than what they’re getting. And that’s where, yes, I agree, so the question is how do we do that? I think we’re going to have to have Congress” allow for a cap on revenue sharing while also keeping student-athletes from becoming employees. Full interview. (link)

The North Carolina System Board of Governors University Governance Committee has approved a policy change that will require all system schools, including North Carolina and NC State, to receive approval from the board and the system president before changing conference affiliation. Specifically, the policy change states that chancellors must give the president “advance notice prior to executing any agreement which would result in the constituent institution’s transfer, removal, or joining of an athletic conference association. The notice to the president shall include for the president’s approval or disapproval a financial plan related to the proposed action." The recommendation must still be approved by the entire 24-member board. (link)

The Florida State Board of Trustees unanimously approved a plan that would allow university auxiliary funds to be loaned to athletics. The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker reports that no specific amount, timeline or purpose was discussed. “They simply approved a plan that allows them to approve future plans. The context: The Board of Governors (which oversees Florida public universities) recently changed its rules, which led to the discussion at FSU today. This was a procedural set-up move for potential moves in the future. Most importantly, it was quick and painless to follow. Spoke too soon, because this is now being discussed by a Board of Governors committee. The Board of Governors committee voted to make sure the BoG will still approve internal loans from FSU to athletics. There's no proposed transaction or reason, FSU's board chairperson says. Just figuring out procedures if or when this needs to happen. In conclusion: Boards did board things today, which may or may not become important for the average FSU student/alum or common college football fan at some time in the future. Back to your regularly scheduled Wednesday.” (link)

More from Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich on the NLRB hearings concerning whether USC football and basketball players should be considered employees. Trojans Asst. AD for Women’s Basketball Operations Ryan Cohan took the stand as what the NLRB termed an “adverse witness,” and was asked about a section (presumably of USC’s expectations or requirements for student-athletes) regarding outfits for the team. Cohan testified that this is not a requirement but a “general hope that they wear these." A question about whether it would be okay for a student-athlete to wear blue and gold elicited laughter from the room, leading Cohan to remark: “Well, there would be a conversation.” Christovich adds: “Cohan is asked whether athletes can wear Adidas shoes instead of Nike shoes (Nike is the official sponsor of UCLA). There's a loooooong pause, and he asks for clarification. He says only that there would be a conversation. Cohan is asked whether players would be allowed to wear Adidas shoes during a game. His response: I'm not sure the answer to that question. Oh come on. We all know the answer is no, per sponsorship contract rules. NLRB lawyer asks Cohan for countable hours and when the team is allowed to hold activities. She asks where Cohan understands that rule comes from. He pauses, again. Then admits it's an NCAA rule. Again, important for the athletes' side of the case as this shows there's control exercised by the NCAA over player activities.” After some parsing of what constitutes the difference between a rule and an expectation (Cohan maintains USC’s WBB team implements the latter) Cohan is asked if players are "held accountable" for violating team expectations. He pauses. "I would think that if any general student on campus, if they break a rule, there would be some sort of consequence or repercussion." Ultimately, he says it would be handled on a case by case basis. Lots more from Christovich. (link)

Florida A&M women’s bowling student-athlete Eva Holmes says there is more to the story involving teammate Shamoria Johnson’s dismissal from the team. Holmes explains that some members of the FAMU bowling team made up their minds not to respect HC Capri Howard and called Howard names and disrespected her prior to the dismissal of Johnson and subsequent walkout of other bowlers. Holmes: “On several different occasions there were very disrespectful emails sent from player to coach with all of us cc’d as an audience to bear witness. From the very beginning, minds were made up that no one was going to respect the coach. … This clearly reached a breaking point when the final, EXTREMELY disrespectful email was sent. Had any other athlete in any other sport sent their HEAD COACH an email like that, they’d be dismissed from the team as well, and their teammates would understand why. Yes, it was stated that a ‘disrespectful’ reply was sent and in return there was a dismissal. But if that were the entire truth, wouldn’t we want to see the email(s)? There’s a reason that hasn’t been done yet. “We’re all held to the same basic standard. Show up to wherever you’re supposed to be at and stay for however long you’re supposed to be there. This is nonnegotiable, given the fact that we all read & signed the same contract. … Every single person agreed and signed this document, so to be sent the same reel over & over again when it’s only telling part of a story that affected me and a few others directly, is beyond frustrating and annoying.” More from Holmes. Illinois has released a statement concerning men’s basketball student-athlete Terrence Shannon, Jr., who has been reinstated as a member of the team pursuant to a court order. According to UI Assoc. Chancellor Robin Kaler, the “nature of the allegations in this case elevated related discipline decisions beyond [Illini HC] Bruce Underwood’s purview. He was not involved in the suspension decision nor in the decision to reinstate. In keeping with the court’s directive, Coach Underwood was instructed to treat Mr. Shannon as he would any other member of the team in good standing and not limit participation based on the involved allegations. Away from the basketball court, Mr. Shannon remains in both the University student conduct process and the Kansas criminal case. These ongoing processes are outside the purview of the DIA.” In the event either process is adjudicated, UI will “take appropriate action under its policy and consistent with the court’s order.” Until then, Shannon will remain in “full status” as a student-athlete and “available for basketball practice and competition.” (link)

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos clarified during yesterday’s earnings call that WWE is “sports entertainment,” which is “really as close to our core as you can get in terms of sports storytelling. In terms of the deal itself, it has options and the protections we seek in our general licensing deals, and with economics that we’re super happy with globally. So, I would not look at this as a signal of any change to our sports strategy.” Sarandos called the WWE Raw deal the “inverse of Formula 1,” adding: “We can build [WWE] like we have with Formula 1 through our shoulder programming. Now, the events themselves are the storytelling with WWE. So, this is a proven formula for us.” (link)

Barstool is in “advanced talks on a wide-ranging sports betting deal with DraftKings,” according to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, who reports the deal would be a “more traditional marketing partnership, with Barstool promoting DraftKings odds and benefiting from customers referred to the sportsbook. Barstool won’t be lending its name to a sportsbook or betting app. While nothing is yet signed, the talks have centered around a multiyear deal that will pay Barstool in the low eight figures per year.” As part of its separation from Penn Entertainment, Barstool is unable to finalize a new betting deal until after the Super Bowl.
