Texas A&M is expected to tap Nebraska AD Trev Alberts for the same role, according to multiple reports. The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman believes Alberts’ departure would be a “disaster” for NU. In addition to hiring Football HC Matt Rhule and Men’s Basketball HC Fred Hoiberg, Alberts launched a $450M renovation project for Memorial Stadium, and Sherman writes: “All of it, without Alberts in charge, is at risk.” No official word from Texas A&M yet. (link); According to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, Alberts would owe NU $4.12M if he leaves the school now. (link); ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Alberts is expected to agree to a five-year deal with the Aggies that will put him near the top of the SEC and among the top 10 athletic directors nationally in terms of salary. Alberts’ current contract with Nebraska pays him $1.7M annually with a scheduled bump to $2.1M in 2026. (link)

Wright State AD Bob Grant announces he will retire at the end of the month, wrapping up a 30-plus-year career in Dayton. Deputy AD Joylynn Brown will serve as Interim AD. President Sue Edwards: "Bob leaves a legacy marked by extraordinary success and an unwavering commitment to our student-athletes. … Joylynn brings a wealth of experience to the role and a steadfast passion for the success of Wright State Athletics and its student-athletes.” (link)

A new subdivision similar to that which NCAA President Charlie Baker outlined in Project DI could occur naturally as a result of the myriad court cases facing the organization, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who notes that even if the cases are all settled, they could cost Power 5 schools eight figures each. One P5 AD tells him: "If there is a settlement in that [House] case, that's going to define the new subdivision." Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter adds: "A settlement for House and all the others, it could almost be like what a collective bargaining agreement would sort of look like in terms of, 'Here's what the rules are going to be going forward, NCAA. You're going to share it with the athletes.'" As far as paying for settlements goes, Altimore Collins & Company strategy consultant Tony Altimore tells Dodd: "Universities, because they're big enterprises, actually have access to really cheap debt. Universities are zero-risk [for lenders]. The University of Michigan isn't going anywhere." More from Dodd. (link)

Northwestern has received a $5M gift from alumnus and trustee Harreld “Kip” Kirkpatrick and his wife, Sara, to support construction of a new softball stadium, which will be named Kip and Sarah Kirkpatrick Stadium. The new venue will create spaces for student-athletes, increase the stadium's seating capacity and elevate the fan experience. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with completion anticipated by spring 2026. The softball team will continue playing home games on the current field during construction. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey agrees with Alabama Men’s Basketball Coach Nate Oats’ assessment that the SEC is now a strong basketball conference because it decided to be. Sankey cites Selection Sunday in 2016 as the impetus for the turnaround: “It was a bad day. We had three teams picked, and that’s my first year as commissioner. I had been thinking about some changes that might be needed, but that day clarified it for me.” Sankey subsequently hired former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese as a consultant and appointed former Hartford MBB HC Dan Leibovitz as the czar of SEC men’s basketball. Tranghese: “They had lost for so long that everybody was beaten down. When I talked to coaches, they’d say, ‘Nobody cares about us. We’re in a football conference.’ I told them that was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. … You got everything you need. You got money, you got incredible fan bases, got a television partner in ESPN that is the No. 1 outlet for college basketball, and you got your own television network. And you’re telling me we can’t be better in basketball? You have so much more than the Big East, in terms of just pure resources, and look what they’ve accomplished.” In evaluating what needed to be done, Trangese says he told Sankey: “You can’t get this league to be good and I can’t get this league to be good. There’s only one core of people who can get this league good, and that’s the coaches. So Danny Leibovitz and I began to spend an inordinate amount of time on coaching. Every time there was a coaching change, all we asked our ADs to do was to listen to what we had to say. All we wanted to make certain was that people weren’t making bad hires. … Sometimes I thought a guy’s reputation wasn’t good. I told one president, ‘You can’t hire this person. You hire him and you’ll end up on probation.’ And that’s what Greg wanted me to do.” Lots more on the rise of SEC hoops from The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker and Joe Rexrode. (link)

Kentucky Sports Radio Founder Matt Jones reports an official Kentucky Basketball NIL Fund is set to be formally launched tomorrow “for the purpose of making UK Basketball the top NIL destination in College Basketball.” Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari and others are scheduled to be part of the launch.” Also from Jones: “As part of the new Kentucky Basketball NIL Fund, fans will be able to participate in ways that include donations but also being active in non-financial ways.” (link)

The Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective has signed the entire Rebels softball team to its NIL ambassador program. Financial details were not released, but a statement from the collective reads, in part: “This investment from the collective, paired with the new stadium, supports the goals of coach Trachsel to have Ole Miss competing on the national stage in this new era of college sports.” (link)

+ Western Carolina will hire Gardner-Webb Men’s Basketball HC Tim Craft for the same post, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. (link)
+ Oregon State Men’s Basketball HC Wayne Tinkle will return for another campaign in Corvallis. (link)
+ Louisville AD Josh Heird says he won’t be using a search firm for his Men’s Basketball hiring process. (link)
+ West Virginia is moving ahead with a national Men’s Basketball HC search. (link)
+ Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick, who is also a founding member of the West Virginia-focused Country Roads Trust, is adamant that former Mountaineers Men’s Basketball HC Bob Huggins will not return to Morgantown: “I think WVU and their handling of the Bob Huggins debacle probably were too lenient with him. Had he worked for me, he would have not had a job after he engaged in this series of homophobic remarks back in the spring and then was retained under very difficult circumstances and then lost his job as a result of a drunken stupor, I will call it. And it's the second time he lost a job because of drunkenness. It may not be remembered by many, but it is by me, he was let go by Cincinnati for exactly the same reason. I think he has no place in the lives of young men who deserve quality leadership, so I would be one that would wonder about the mental capacity of any leader of any university who would consider hiring him for a coaching position. … His future with WVU sports is totally at an end.” (link)
+ Ole Miss Men’s Basketball HC Chris Beard has agreed to a six-year contract extension through the 2029-30 season. (link)
+ A year after Arizona State and Men’s Basketball HC Bobby Hurley announced a contract extension through the 2025-26 season, an enforceable agreement has yet to be signed. The new contract includes a $2M buyout should Hurley leave for another program, and USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Jason Wolf note the term sheet both sides are working off of now is non-binding. Meanwhile, Hurley’s current contract expires June 30, after which point Hurley could leave ASU and owe the Sun Devils nothing. Hurley’s agent, Matthew Kelly of Excel Sports Management, tells USA Today: “We should have this thing done in the next couple of days. I’d say that getting stuff done at Arizona State, and not just [former AD] Ray [Anderson] but a lot of the folks there sometimes, it’s just a challenge, to say that in the nicest way.” Marquette National Law Institute Founder Martin Greenburg says this situation is “extraordinarily unusual,” adding: “Most term sheets say, ‘good faith negotiation,’ they put a drop-dead date on it, which is important, and basically there is a contract that comes out of that. Even with some of the most recent hires in college football, with the jumping going on, there were term sheets and they were followed by contracts. Signed contracts.” (link)

Murray State has received $1.4M in gifts from the Jim Bob Kevil estate and the former Racer Foundation to support the capital campaign initiatives to enhance the athletics footprint. Racers AD Nico Yantko: "Mr. Kevil was an avid supporter of Murray State Athletics and we cannot thank him enough for this incredibly generous investment into our athletics department during his lifetime. These transformational gifts will have a major impact on our future plans as we continue to make significant progress around our facilities and the student-athlete experience." (link)

LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey downplays the kerfuffle that occurred at the end of the SEC Championship game against South Carolina: “When you have two tough teams that play so hard that are so good and compete, those kinds of things happen. And it’s so out of control with the media right now. You don't get this much attention when men do it, so why do you keep writing it about the women? It really comes across, and I'll just say it, it comes across as a little bit sexist. … Nobody got in a fight. There were no punches thrown. There was nobody choked. It was a shoving match. Whoop-dee-doo.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown reports that while bowl games are expected to be included in EA Sports College Football 25, bowl stadiums “that are NOT NFL stadiums or campus sites will not be included in *this year's game*. So no Fenway Park, etc. EA will use a generic stadium for those games, I'm told.” (link)

Financial Times’ Olaf Storbeck profiles Adidas’ ascension under CEO Bjørn Gulden, who took over at the beginning of 2023, and notes the company, “which was originally bracing for an annual loss of up to [$765.4M] last year, is expected on Wednesday to confirm operating profit of [$293M]. Meanwhile, shares of Adidas are up 48% since Gulden took over while Nike and Puma are both trading down. During his first year, damage control was Gulden’s top priority after the company ended its partnership with Kanye West. As a result, Adidas lost 5% of its annual revenue and more than a quarter of its overall operating profits. Gulden’s solution was to sell Yeezy shoes and donate parts of the proceeds to charities fighting hate speech. Storbeck: “Adidas dodged a whopping financial hit while being able to argue it was doing good with the remaining stock.” Gulden has also rekindled the company’s relationships with retailers, and Intersport Deutschland COO Frank Geisler tells Storbeck: “We can already see a much improved focus on client’s needs. We have seen the first new products which will be in stores next winter. I’m really looking forward to them.” Challenges remain, including what some employees consider to be an “erratic” managerial style in which he sometimes picks favorites. Gulden pushes back, saying that rather than “discussing with 100 people of which 90 don’t have a clue, I try to find the 10 who really matter.” (link, link)

And now the results: Adidas’ revenue for 2023 QB fell 8% to $5.2B, leaving the company with a net loss of $393M. According to Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, “North America, which is the second biggest market for the brand, was the worst performer with revenue down 25% to $1.3B. Business in Europe (-10%), Asia-Pacific (-6%) and Latin America (-12%) all declined. The lone bright spot was Greater China, up 29% to $730M.” For the full year, revenue dropped by 5% to $23.3B with a net loss of $82M. It was the company’s first annual loss since 1992. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker and SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt tell SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the idea of expanding the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments is at least worth considering since the existing field accounts for just 19% of all DI schools. Baker reiterates his stance that expansion shouldn’t come at the expense of access for smaller schools. “Automatic qualifiers [are] sort of one of the primary DNA codes of the whole thing, and those folks surprise people sometimes. ... When people talk about expansion, at least the folks that I talked to, they're talking more about creating opportunities for additional teams that have performed during the course of the regular season.” One question that remains to be answered regarding potential expansion, Portnoy notes, is “how it might affect the NCAA’s media rights agreement with CBS Sports and TNT Sports. … If the NCAA added teams to the field, that means more games on TV. In theory, the NCAA wouldn’t want to give those games up for free. The NCAA, CBS and TNT Sports all declined comment when asked if expansion would trigger any clauses in the deal.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark confirms he favors expanding March Madness and acknowledges doing so would be good for the league: “We’ve got the deepest conference in America. We’ve got nine teams that definitely will be in. Arguably, we could get up to 11. So more access is great for us.” As far as which way the momentum is going now, Yormark says it “looks like there could be some modest expansion. The number of 76 has been floating out there. ... The data shows that if you do expand to 76 the Power Four conferences will benefit, mostly. I think at the center of that will be the Big 12. I’m all about access.” Yormark was also asked what plans the league has for improving officiating and explained that “at the end of every season, we put everything to an audit to see where we can be better as a conference. We will go through that process right now. I obviously have gone to a lot of games this year and there (have) been obviously some issues along the way. … The question is: Is there an opportunity for us to get better and manage them differently? I don’t know the answer to that just yet. But we’ll go through that exercise and we’ll see where we end up.’” Yormark also calls the narrative that the Big 12 has “gamed” the NET system “just noise,” adding: “We’ve ranked at the top of every metric possible…and we are the No. 1 conference in America. We’ve shown that for many, many, many years. It will only get stronger next year.” (link); Yormark also announced the Big 12 will keep its Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournaments in Kansas City through 2031. (link)

College Football Playoff leaders are "on target" to resolve the revenue distribution and governance structure in the next CFP contract, per ESPN’s Heather Dinich, who reports: “Commissioners of the Mountain West Conference, Sun Belt, Mid-American Conference, Conference USA and American Athletic Conference aren't keen on the proposed revenue distribution, which sources said would limit the Group of 5 conferences from making any substantial increase in revenue in the next contract, which would begin in 2026. One source described it a ‘slight uptick; nominal.’” Also from Dinich: “One source said that ‘in a perfect world’ they could come to an agreement on the revenue and TV deal as early as Thursday. Regardless of when there is a resolution, multiple sources have said the details of a format in 2026 and beyond – from the number of teams to how they qualify – won't be settled until after the TV deal is done.” (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois sits down for another interview, this time with Arizona Desert Swarm’s Devin Homer and Kim Doss, who ask whether it’s possible for the Wildcats to overcome their financial struggles and realize a budget surplus: “Do I think it’s possible? Absolutely. We’re going to, but I say that with we’re going to have to look at what we’re currently doing. And I say that on day seven, and that I don’t know what’s working really well, where we’re spending our money, how we’re raising our money. Can we optimize? You’re either a cost center or you’re a profit center. And are our cost centers the most efficient and effective? Are our profit centers the most efficient and effective? So, we’re going to look at every one of those revenue opportunities and maximize them, and we’re going to look across the board at every single one of those units and just make sure that they’re most efficient and effective.” Reed-Francois also talks about ensuring Title IX is an integral part of the department’s mission: “I don’t believe that it’s an ‘or’ proposition. And what I mean by that, we are going to be an ‘and.’ When we are excellent at one sport, that helps other sports. When we are great at women’s softball, that’s going to help baseball. When baseball goes to the College World Series and wins the national championship, people are going to be talking about the University of Arizona at a time when it’s going to help football. … It’s going to be like a rising tide.” (link)

No team plane for Texas AD Chris Del Conte, who “took off on the open road in his Chevy truck Tuesday morning, bound for the Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.” Why? Del Conte tells the Austin American-Statesman’s Kirk Bohls: “Why not?” He adds: “Peace and quiet. You can think, you can reflect. No people coming in and out of your office. All the chaos around you. It’s good to just get in your car or truck. A lot of ideas come on an empty road. Once in a while, you’ll have a gem. Right now, I’m just looking at windmills, trying to pretend I’m not Don Quixote. … Just me and a bunch of 18-wheelers. Hitting the black pavement. Becoming one with America.” Del Conte also points out that he has “not spent a dime in the state of Oklahoma. Just passing through. … I don’t mind paying for gas in Texas. Got to keep our boys in West Texas happy.” (link)

Lawmakers during yesterday’s House Committee on Education and the Workforce hearing missed an opportunity to ask Saint Joseph’s AD Jill Bodensteiner a critical question: “Are you willing to relinquish some of the control your school exerts over your 480 student-athletes?” On3’s Eric Prisbell points out how frequently the topic of control came up during the Dartmouth NLRB hearing and writes: “Lawmakers never asked Bodensteiner about the steps that schools – specifically her own – could take to reduce the chances of an employment model coming to campus. … Instead, we heard Representative Bob Good (R-VA), chair of the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions, making irrelevant points about athletes being ‘willing participants,’ the ‘envy of their campus’ and the ‘envy of their high school teammates who didn’t have the ability to continue in college.’” Meanwhile, Bodensteiner suggested that pep band members could be deemed employees because they could receive scholarships, but Prisbell argues: “That obscures the issue: No one would contend that schools exert the same level of control over pep band members as they do over big-time college athletes.” Ultimately, Prisbell concludes athletic departments “can relinquish some control over athletes to diminish the chances of an employee model taking hold at their school. If only one lawmaker asked Bodensteiner if Saint Joe’s is willing to do just that.” (link)

South Carolina’s College Sport Research Institute has released its 14th annual National DI men’s and women’s basketball Adjusted Graduation Gap (AGG) report, which finds that “for the fourteenth consecutive year, basketball player graduation rates continue to be significantly below adjusted full-time student body graduation rates.” The overall AGG for men’s basketball student-athletes is -22.7, “indicating that the overall average graduation rate among Division I conferences is 22.7 percentage points below the men’s full-time student body rate.” Similarly, the overall AGG for women’s basketball student-athletes is 14.6 percentage points below the women’s full-time student rate. Among the 31 Division I basketball conferences, only one men’s AGG was positive (MEAC +1.8) while two conferences had positive women’s AGGs (MEAC +5.4, Patriot League +0.6). Additionally, the gap between Black (-36.6) and White (-25.1) men’s basketball players in major conferences has increased in the past year. While last year’s gap between Black and White DI men’s basketball players was the smallest AGG ever recorded (7.3 percentage points), this year’s gap increased by 4.2 percentage points to 11.5. The AGG of major conference White men’s basketball players improved 3.6 percentage points from last year to -25.1. The DI women’s basketball major conferences’ AGG of -20.9 percentage points is 9.3 points worse than the Mid-Major AGG of -11.6 points. Lots more data in the full report. (link)
