Rogers State AD Chris Ratcliff and GA Corrie King sit down to discuss institutional challenges, facilities and much more. On the challenges of leading a young athletic department that is 17 years old, Ratcliff points out a key “growing pain” is having alumni who are in a position to just give. “Our alumni are 37 and younger, and they're not in that giving capacity. They've got little babies. They've got little kids. They're buying diapers right now. They don't have disposable income to give at a high level and so once you mold this, as we navigate this young athletic department, it's difficult and so you rely very much on the community.” For facilities, RSU is finalizing new turf for baseball and softball, with women’s soccer recently completed for this season. Looking ahead, the two priorities are a new gymnasium and indoor facility for baseball, softball and golf. On the latter, Ratclifff notes bids are out and the Hillcats hope to break ground soon on a 10K square-foot space that will support those programs. Ratcliff hopes to direct university leadership’s attention to the need for a new gym next, which is expected to cost between $25-30M, now that RSU has secured funding for a new STEM building. Ratcliff on his leadership style: “My style is I'm going to hire the best person I can and let them do their job, and if they cannot do their job, then we have to talk about it. I hired you. I believed in you. I will ask questions, but I'm not gonna be in your hair. So I always that quote, and I always screw the quote up, but I always give it all the time. It's Maya Angelou, ‘People forget what you said, people forget what you did, but people will never gonna forget how you made them feel.’ And that's the legacy I want to live.” More. (link)

Point Park held a pep rally earlier this month to celebrate its transition to DII and the Mountain East. AD Scott Swain: “Going NCAA is for the entire university. It’s not just the student athletes and the coaches. […] All these schools that are NCAA Division II that we will compete against are in close proximity, so our student athletes don’t have to go far to compete against them. But now when students look at those other schools, they will also look at us, because we would be considered a peer to them.” On the MEC’s decision to allow Point Park to compete for conference championships: “Our coaches and our student athletes are still going to be competing for conference championships this fall, winter, [and] spring. It’s good to have something to play for, and that’s what’s really important.” (link)

USA Lacrosse Magazine’s Paul Ohanian chats with leaders about the impact of postseason expansion and the addition of automatic qualifiers. CACC Assoc. Commissioner/Women’s Lacrosse National Committee Chair Doug DeBiase: “I think adding the AQs for the tournament may help us to see even more growth, with perhaps more teams adding the sport and more conferences reaching the six-team minimum to become AQ eligible. I like the trend that Division II women’s lacrosse is moving in, and I think it’s going to keep getting better in the next few years.” Flagler Women’s Lacrosse HC Grant Kelem: “This sure makes it clear that as a conference, you don’t want to lose your AQ eligibility. You better do everything you can to keep at least six teams. […] I think the AQ now takes some of the scheduling gamesmanship out of the equation. Coaches can schedule games against top-caliber teams, knowing that they still have a path to the tournament through the conference championship AQ.” (link)

Nebraska-Kearney is upgrading the video board at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium after nearly 20 years, with AD Marc Bauer telling KRVN’s Jayson Jorgensen UNK hopes to have the new board up by homecoming against Pittsburg State, barring any further delays. Bauer notes the outgoing video board has been damaged by lightning, with glitches over the last few years. (link)

A new study conducted by researchers at BYU (DI), Kansas (DI), and Northwestern (DI) is linking sports betting with long-term negative financial consequences for gamblers. The researchers used credit and debit card transaction data from 2010 to September 2023 to analyze how people spend their money and found that “people are basically taking away money from long-term investments, and they’re spending it more in the present,” Scott Baker, a co-author and a finance professor at Northwestern, tells Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming. Baker adds: “But then we also see that they are more, maybe, exposing themselves, to some extent, to more financial instability or financial fragility, kind of increasing amounts of overdrafts, running up more debt on their credit card, and things like that.” From the paper: “The legalization of sports betting has far-reaching implications for household financial behavior and health. Our results show that not only does sports betting lead to increased betting activity, but it also leads to higher credit card balances, less available credit, a reduction in net investments, and an increase in lottery play. These findings suggest that while sports betting offers new avenues for state revenue, it also introduces significant financial risks to local residents, especially for already constrained households.” (link)
