Now that Simon Fraser has a permanent leader in athletics, the Vancouver Sun’s Steve Ewen asks what is next for the Red Leafs. Provost/VP Dilson Rassier tells Ewen SFU will finalize a long-term strategic plan in the next few months “that ensures financial optimization and revenue generation.” Rassier also noted it is possible for an AD to be hired under new Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation Luc Simard. On SFU’s future in the NCAA, Rassier: “We are part of the NCAA and nothing has changed so far. We are not planning any change as of now, but we are developing a plan that needs to be sustainable and feasible for the next many years to come. If, after consultation and developing that plan, we have an indication we have to consider leaving we will consider it. As of now, no decision has been made.” On sport sponsorship, Rassier said no decisions have been made about bringing back Football and that he hopes no sports will be cut. (link)

The DII Championships Committee continued discussions around moving the Football Championship to the first full week in January allowing for a week 12 at the end of the season, “However, ESPN has indicated there are no programming windows available through their linear platforms in the January timeframe – ESPN would prefer that the Division II championship game remain in its December schedule.” Earlier this year, the Football Committee desired the championship to remain on a linear platform as much as possible, but will review the matter again. Speaking of ESPN, the committee was updated on the terms of the NCAA’s media rights deal with the worldwide leader. “This year the contracted games in football, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball will be broadcast through ESPN+. DII Men’s Basketball Championship game will remain on CBS. Preliminary-round games for women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball will be broadcast through host institution/conference networks.” The Champs Committee also granted the Peach Belt an AQ bid for Men’s Lacrosse through its partnership with the RMAC. The two conference champions will compete for the AQ. Also the bench size limit for Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse has been set to 72 and 50, respectively. (link)

Shepherd AD Carrie Bodkins joins the Panhandle News Network as she starts her tenure with the Rams. Asked about SU’s position in the PSAC: “I feel pretty confident saying that, right now, we have no plans at this point in time just to make a change. We're comfortable where we are. It was a good decision, like you stated, for a couple different things, from the financial perspective, when it comes to reduced travel, and then also with missed class time for student-athletes. So at this time, we're happy where we are. It's a competitive conference, but that's good. I mean, we want to rise to the challenge. We want to move the needle. We want to become better and be more competitive.” On what attracted her to Shepherd, Bodkins states the position is “very lucrative,” pointing to the Rams’ history of success, transition to the PSAC and more. The NCAA is exploring changes to its membership financial reporting system (MFRS), according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes there is “increasing pressure to tackle long-standing criticisms about the system’s perceived shortcomings, as well as to address the dawning era of college athlete compensation. … Which MFRS categories should be included in establishing the revenue ‘pool’ has been the subject of recent debate among expert witnesses” as the House settlement unfolds. Meanwhile, the MFRS continues to “lack clarity, leaving much interpretation to the schools, such as with the catch-all category ‘other operating revenue.’ As Sportico previously reported, there’s so much wiggle room in the process that a handful of schools manage each year to claim a perfectly balanced budget, down to the dollar.” NCAA CFO Mario Morris tells Libit he thinks the current MFRS captures “75% to 80%” of an athletic department’s true economic picture but would like to find a way to “get it to 90%.” One specific area of improvement involves identifying the flow of money between schools’ main campuses and athletics, and James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis says: “There needs to be more consistent and clarified financial reporting so that those making decisions know what they are basing their decisions on. You’ve got [college] presidents and chancellors at the table. You’ve got attorneys and lobbyists and all these others that maybe don’t fully understand what the financials are telling them, because it is not clear how the NCAA has defined some of the categories.” More.
