Outgoing Nova Southeastern AD Michael Mominey sat down with D2.ticker/Connect’s Bryan Fischer at the 2024 NACDA Convention about what is on the horizon for the Sharks, building relationships across campus, being named NACDA AD of the Year and more. The Sharks are on track to add Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse to their portfolio, with plans to revamp the old Miami Dolphins practice facility which is on NSU’s campus, and are exploring adding Beach Volleyball. NSU has also broken ground on a multi-million dollar Softball stadium and is working to grow its restarted Women’s Rowing program to 40-50 student-athletes. On his dual role as AD and Assoc. VP for Advancement, Mominey notes the idea came through working to bridge the gap between athletics and advancement, between which there are natural synergies. Further: “On the human capital side, we don't have enough people to raise money. We're trying to get our coaches trained up to be junior development officers, so we actually were intentional about getting our head coaches, who we asked to fund raise, but then we just tell them to go fundraise.We didn't really tell them how or why, they know why … but by bringing these two groups together and breaking those silos, what we have found out is 60-65% of the job is really the same. Advancement people tell the story of the university. They recruit donors. They're trying to bring money into donors. They're trying to bring people on the campus. Well what are we doing Athletics? We're recruiting student athletes and families to come to the university so as we sat in these rooms together, and it was a lot of work at the beginning, we found out and shared some ideas that we're all doing basically the same thing and we're behind the same mission for the university.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. Sportico’s Daniel Libit believes the NCAA has taken a blow with the loss of Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), who sponsored legislation earlier this year that would prevent college athletes from obtaining employee status, as he has officially lost his primary race to state Sen. John McGuire following a court-certified recount. Libit: “A former college wrestler and athletic administrator at Liberty University, he introduced in May the ‘Protecting Student Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act,’ which would not only forbid college athletes from being deemed employees of their schools, but also their conferences and the NCAA. By extension, the bill would prevent athletes from joining a union, as the Dartmouth men’s basketball team did earlier this year. … Last month, an amended version of H.R. 8534 was reported out by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and placed on the union calendar of bills that are eligible for floor consideration. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has yet to take it up or publicly address the issue of athlete employee status, having instead focused on transgender athletes competing in NCAA women’s sports. In late June, Johnson hosted a panel discussion along with college swimmer Riley Gaines. With November’s presidential election close at hand, it is hard to imagine H.R. 8534 going any further this cycle. Good’s absence from Congress next year is unlikely to have much bearing on the ultimate fate of the Congressional debate over college athlete compensation, which has grown increasingly partisan as the subject has moved beyond NIL rights to those of employee status and unionization.” (link)

Frostburg State is facing a $7.7M budget deficit and notes in a letter to campus “there is no risk of FSU closing and our students’ education will not be altered or interrupted.” The university has cut more than $1.5M starting in July and has a plan “which will be a multi-year effort, focuses on four main elements: an administrative reorganization (for projected savings up to $1.7 million in FY25 and beyond); a reduction in faculty staffing (for projected savings up to $3.9 million in FY26 and up to $4.8 million in FY27); reductions to our athletics budget and scholarship reallocations (for projected savings of $883,000 in FY25 and beyond); and University and unit operational reductions (for projected savings up to $1 million in FY25 and beyond). A reduction in faculty staffing will address an imbalance in the reduction of Full Time Equivalent (FTE) enrollments of 36% since FY 2010 versus the reduction of FTE faculty by only 14% during that same period.” (link)

The Dow fell to a session low of more than 1,000 points today amid fears of a U.S. recession. The Nasdaq lost 3.43%, and the S&P 500 slid 3.0%. In addition to Friday’s disappointing July jobs report, investors are concerned that the Federal Reserve is behind in cutting interest rates to bolster an economic slowdown, with the central bank choosing instead to keep rates at the highest in two decades last week. Tech shares were among the worst performers with Nvidia tumbling 6.4% and Apple falling more than 4% after Berkshire Hathaway cut its Apple stake in half. Global markets also tumbled, as the 12.4% loss on the Nikkei marked its the worst day since the “Black Monday” of 1987 hit Wall Street. (link)
