Apple has emerged as a “potential landing spot” for the Pac-12, according to the New York Post’s Marchand, who reports Commissioner Kliavkoff could present Apple as a possibility to his schools soon. “If the universities will be interested in a potential all-streaming deal and if the terms will end up being good enough to prevent schools departing to other conferences are yet to be determined. … If Apple were to make an agreement, then it would presumably produce more than just football for the Pac-12. It is possible the production from the Pac-12 Network could be used. Apple can be very persnickety in contract negotiations, which was one of the reasons a much-talked-about agreement with the NFL for Sunday Ticket never happened. For the Pac-12, reaching a deal may not be easy, but it is a possible alternative.” (link)

Washington State President Schulz tells the Mercury News’ Wilner he understands the league’s recent unity statement could be seen “as the same thing a head coach does when he says publicly that he loves his staff, then he fires them all. But we were getting battered constantly with all the rhetoric out of the Big 12 (region), with talk that schools were leaving … At the least, we had to let people know the 10 Pac-12 schools were committed to staying together. But the speed with which (the presidents) were willing to put that out — I was stunned by my colleagues. Somebody said, ‘We should do something,’ and within an hour, everyone was saying yes … Normally, everyone wants to be a wordsmith.” Schulz also tells Wilner: “Some schools have a little trepidation about what (the media deal) will look like. But I don’t feel at all like anyone is spiraling off into places of despair.” Still, Schulz acknowledges that “at the end of the day, we have to get a deal done. That’s the only thing that will quiet everybody down.” (link)

LEAD1 CEO McMillen tells On3’s Prisbell that if student-athletes are designated as employees, then how the courts interpret the subsequent application of Title IX is poised to be a “classic case down the road.” For instance, McMillen wonders what would happen if some male athletes believed the profits they generated were being disproportionately distributed to female athletes. “If (male athletes) are getting 5 or 10% of the revenue, whatever it is, the revenue could have been twice that. The men are getting $40K but (believe they) really should be getting $100K if it weren’t for Title IX. That’s the issue.” (link)

Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is set for a major renovation that Gators AD Stricklin describes as follows: “This is going to be, by far, the most ambitious facility project that, not only the University of Florida’s ever done from an athletic standpoint, but it might be the biggest in SEC history.” Stricklin estimates the upgrades will cost a “few hundred million dollars” and says the project is “not going to be a new coat of paint and a couple of new video boards. It’s going to be all of that, plus significant structural renovations.” Details themselves are still being finalized. (link)

According to police testimony, Alabama MBB student-athlete Miller brought the gun authorities say was used in the shooting that resulted in capital murder charges being brought against former teammate Miles and another individual. Law enforcement officials say Miles requested Miller bring the gun to his location. Asked why Miller wasn’t charged with a crime, Tuscaloosa PD Chief Whitley explains: “That’s not a question I can answer. There’s nothing we could charge him with.” Crimson Tide HC Oats says he was aware of Miller’s role in the event: “We knew about that. Can’t control everything everybody does outside of practice. Nobody knew that was going to happen. College kids are out, Brandon hasn’t been in any type of trouble nor is he in any type of trouble in this case. Wrong spot at the wrong time.” Investigators also say Tide student-athlete Bradley was at the scene of the shooting. (link)

Mississippi State AD Selmon talks about his vision for the department and working with several new Bulldogs HCs, telling 247Sports he’s sat down with all of the HCs and “for each of our first year guys, it was, ‘Hey, let’s build the foundation.’ There’s no shortcut for the foundation. But it makes it unique that we can partner and grow together. There’s a lot of things evolving, so we’re going to be able to have fresh eyes on everything and are able to rethink, whether it’s programmatically, whether it’s from a facilities standpoint, whatever that might be, I think it has a lot of added advantages coming in here together at similar times.” (link)

This year’s home MBB attendance for Oral Roberts totaled 85,030, good for a 40% increase over last season’s 15-game total of 60,714, and Tulsa World’s Haisten reports this season’s per-game average of 5,314 is the program’s best since 1998-99. Golden Eagles AD Johnson: “No doubt about it — there has been a positive impact on our revenue. If you saw the Saturday game, we were overflowing in our courtside seating. There’s a great demand for those seats. People want us to build more suites. People want those premium seating areas more than ever before. Now, I’m sitting here considering whether I should build four more suites. When we won those games (during the 2021 NCAA Tournament), I remember the Tulsa World saying, ‘Let’s hope ORU can take advantage of this momentum.’ After it was announced that we would renovate the Mabee Center and build the Mike Carter Center, the Tulsa World wrote about how we had capitalized on that momentum. I’ve used those messages many times when talking with our donors. We’re right on the precipice now of going as high as we want to go. That’s an exciting position to be in.” (link)

Harvard AD McDermott says the athletic department has been able to more effectively monitor student engagement through the CrimZone app, which rewards students for attending games. “With our women’s basketball program this year, we’ve doubled our sales to their events. We’ve sold out of men’s basketball games and men’s hockey games this season at a higher clip than we have in the recent past, and our football attendance was also up.” Regarding recent allegations against Women’s Hockey HC Stone, McDermott declined to comment specifically but noted the Crimson next year will administer a redesigned survey next year resembling Harvard’s Q Guide course evaluation tool. The NHL agreed to pay a $200K license fee to NC State for use of Carter-Finley Stadium for last weekend’s Canes-Capitals matchup, as well as up to $100K to restore the playing field after the hockey game and the removal of the rink. The contract also called for the NHL to pay a $50,000 bonus if ticket sales accounted for 75% of the stadium capacity. The contract cited a capacity of 54,577, and reports say 57K attended the game. [...] And we, as AD and coach, had a really, really, really special relationship, kind of like brothers, where we would go back and forth, and we fight sometimes, but we will always have each other's backs.And he just had a unique understanding, I think, because he had been a part of a college basketball coaching staff - what the plight of a coach is - and, you know, we talked all the time about, like, ‘I'm not going anywhere if you don't go anywhere.’” (link)

The NCAA Board of Governors Student-Athlete Engagement Committee and DI, DII and DIII SAACs pen an open letter to all student-athletes regarding mental health which reads, in part: “Mental health struggles can occur with a wide range of severity, depending on the impacted individual. While an individual's mental health status is personal, treatment and support are a community effort. As such, it's encouraging that there has been an increase in support from student-athletes, administrators and athletics staff in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and dedicating effort to improve support systems. … As part of its continued work to provide recommendations for supporting and promoting student-athlete mental health, the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports commissioned a Mental Health Advisory Group and charged it with reviewing and updating the existing Mental Health Best Practices. Moving forward, the Association is committed to creating well-informed recommendations and education efforts to support student-athletes on every campus. We want to challenge campuses around the country to take action and be proactive in implementing the forthcoming recommendations. As change begins to take place, the student-athlete voice should remain involved in all conversations.” Full letter. (link)

The NCAA has released new dashboards showing DI and DII transfer data for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years. DI data show that 20,911 student-athletes entered the Transfer Portal in 2022, an increase over the previous year’s total of 17,781. Of that figure, 78% of the entrants in women's sports were on athletics aid at their departing school, while 65% of those in men's sports were on athletics aid upon portal entry. Additionally, 30% of the student-athletes who entered the Transfer Portal in 2022 were graduate students, 1% point lower than in 2021. While 13% of all DI student-athletes entered into the Transfer Portal in 2022, 7% successfully transferred to an NCAA program after portal entry. Broken down by sport, 1,649 MBB players entered into the Transfer Portal in 2022, down slightly from the 1,687 who entered in 2021. In WBB, 1,276 athletes entered the portal, which is an increase over the 1,130 entrants the previous year. Additionally, 2,918 FBS student-athletes entered the portal in 2022, compared with 2,531 in 2021. FCS student-athletes entering the portal increased by roughly 500 to 2,085. More data. (link)
