More from Houston President Renu Khator on the need to double the athletic department’s budget, as she reiterates that “we can’t do it on the backs of students. Of course, we can’t go back to the same 10 to 15 donors. You’ve done enough. All the burden cannot come on the shoulders of the same small group of donors. … I don’t want to just pull the rug out from under (athletics). I want to win as badly as anybody else. Our way out is not by cutting expenses. Our way out is by increasing our revenue. If we don’t think that’s where our goal should be, that means we are settling for mediocrity. And I’m not there to settle for mediocrity.” On working with new AD Eddie Nuñez, Khator says: “I’m going to sit down with Eddie, just like I do with our other vice presidents. We’ll discuss what the plan is, what the strategy is. We’re working together. We both have the same goal. I want to make sure he has the tools to be successful.” Meanwhile, Nuñez tells the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte: “There are things I see already that we can do a little differently. Not a big change. Just a little difference that will make it really good. I want to be able to see things. I want to understand and say, ‘Why do you do this? Why is it this way? ’ Because a fresh set of eyes are big, and that’s what I have right now.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork and President Ted Carter met with trustees this week to discuss the changes in college sports, and Bjork noted that roster limits means Ohio State will likely lose about 150 student-athletes. Carter added: “We'll still have scholarships, we'll still have programs. Some of those sports may start to look and act a little bit more like a club sport, but yet compete at the Division I level and still travel and still compete." (link)

Memphis AD Ed Scott says some hiring news is likely coming soon after the department lost several people over the past few months. “I tend to move pretty fast. So, you’ll see within the next few days, by the end of next week definitely, you’ll see some announcements about staff being hired and us filling some roles.” Scott plans on restructuring some of former Deputy AD Jeff Crane’s responsibilities among more than one person and notes: “You can’t replace the person. You can only replace the position, and Jeff had amassed a lot of stuff underneath him. A lot of different duties and personal oversight. And so for me, I’m looking at the structure, and I’m saying, ‘OK, is this really the best structure for this new iteration of college athletics?’ And so as I’m making hires and I’m looking at that, it’s a two-pronged approach. What is the right structure, and then, who are the players that can fit that structure? … Jeff was handling a lot of the legal stuff, and candidly, we’re going to keep Jeff around as a consultant-type role for a little bit. Because he’s got a lot of institutional knowledge and he had been involved in all these processes. And Jeff and I worked really well together. I honestly believe Jeff on this wholeheartedly, if it wasn’t for South Carolina where he lived and worked before, I don’t think he would have left. And I tried to retain him, candidly, because he’s got a really good skillset. He’s a nice human being, and he’s good at what he does. I want that type of talent.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips joined SportsCenter yesterday and said of the ongoing legal disputes with Clemson and Florida State: “It’s disappointing we're in this place. It’s a harmful kind of situation, but we are going to…fight. And that's the way it should be when you sign an agreement twice – willingly sign – and you are part of a group that comes together and decides that this is what you want to do for the next 20 years. And I think you should be held accountable for that. That being said, we will compartmentalize that piece of it and we will go into the football season and that’s what I'm really looking forward to. … Some of the legal conversations and some of the dynamics around these cases has taken away from the ACC, taken away [from] the incredible success that our student-athletes are having in the sport of football and across all 28 of our sports. So with the kickoff this weekend, we can maybe put the legal issues to the side and we can focus on what young men and women are doing on the competitive playing field with our fall sports.” On whether he expects a resolution via court-ordered mediation with Florida State, Phillips says the conference will continue to abide by the judge's decisions, and the direction of the talks is “for the lawyers to decide.” (link)

More from Phillips as he plans to attend this year’s Aer Lingus Classic between Florida State and Georgia Tech in Ireland after missing the last two matchups due to conference realignment activity. He tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop: “It’s so important to the league. It’s our first ACC conference game of the season, two great schools, two great football programs, a chance to play in Week 0 and really capture the majority of the country that is craving for college football. Being able to go support and show commitment to our student-athletes, coaches and schools is really important to me. … And I think you have to be present and make sure you’re at events like this. I’m honored to go, and I think it’s going to be just a tremendous experience for our schools and a great chance to showcase ACC football.” Despite the league’s legal dispute with FSU, Phillips says he’s grateful for Georgia Tech’s willingness to give up a home game and the Seminoles’ commitment to making the trip. “It would have been easy for someone to say no for a variety of good reasons. We were really able to work together collaboratively. It should just be a great opportunity for the league.” (link)

In the second of a multipart interview with 247Sports’ Carter Karels, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts talks about former Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle’s departure, facilities upgrades, renewing the rivalry with Texas and more. On what lessons he learned from Schlossnagle’s departure: “I do not know specifically what lessons [I] learned. We are in the people business. You are dealing with people, and people have desires, goals, ambitions. They have emotions. The one thing that is important to me is, I believe that this is a place that can and does attract the highest level of administrators, coaches and others. Nobody is a hostage here, including student-athletes. If people do not want to be here, it is OK. My job is the programs and the student-athletes. That is what I am primarily focused on.” Alberts also says the Aggies are working with the 12th Man Foundation on updates to Blue Bell Park. “If we have donor support, donor interest and pledges or we have premium seats or spaces that allow us to sell those to pay debt, perfect. But just general debt service or commercial paper that adds on to the operating expenses of athletics, especially in this new iteration, are just not going to be feasible for us going forward. So we are confident. The 12th Man Foundation is confident in the ability to fulfill some of this.” More from Alberts. (link)

Xavier AD Greg Christopher joins the Sean Miller Podcast and talks with host Paul Fritschner about the state of the athletic department, including what’s happening with both basketball programs, the latest on capital projects, the impact of potential NCAA Tournament expansion and more. Christopher notes the last phase of in-arena work at the Cintas Center is in its home stretch with the Center Court Club and deck on the northeast corner set to be completed by October 1. “I’m not saying that Cintas is done at that point, with the $30M or so of work that’s been done over the last, say, seven years, but we can probably take a deep breath on what I would call major work in the building for the for the next couple of years.” With the new Big East media rights deal including content on Max and Peacock, Christopher points out the goal is to find a balance between harnessing the power of OTA networks and streamers. “There is a hard reality right now that the networks are paying more for content that goes on streaming than on the networks because the reality is they're trying to build those platforms. So, for us to turn down streaming at this point in time would have been frankly a financial hit to the conference. So it makes sense for streaming to get introduced at this point in time.” If the House settlement is approved and implemented, Christopher says since all 11 Big East members have their budgets set for this year, the conference will handle the first year’s payment. After that, the new TV contract should mitigate the $600K each school will owe in subsequent years. More from Christopher. (link)

Nevada hopes to have finalized plans for an all-sport Fieldhouse in October that would serve as an indoor football practice facility. Wolf Pack AD Stephanie Rempe: "We are working on the design and the cost. By October, we expect to have a pretty close to shovel-ready design. And then once we know the cost and the financing, we're going to figure out a way to get that done. It is critical for our ability to make a statement about our commitment to athletics, make a statement about football, show that we can get things done. It would be a nontraditional type of build. And (we want) to show this community that's something we can get done after talking about it for 20 or 30 years." Rempe also explains the non-traditional element of the build could help get it fast-tracked. "Non-traditional meaning how we build it. We're still working through what that is like, but as long as it's kept outside of the university and you can lease it and work through all of those things, there are lots of logistics, lots of state things we have to work through. But we're pretty confident we can get it done." Rempe also provides an update on upgrades to Peccole Park, home of the Wolf Pack baseball team. "Right now, the turf has been lifted up and they're working on the drainage. … And then Tom Dolan Locker Room, so we're renovating the inside of the locker room. Those are exciting. We are still working on the Fieldhouse, too. Super excited about the progress we've made there. We'll continue to figure out how to invest in the facilities that we need as a department." (link)

OneTeam Partners and ONIT Athlete have entered into a multiyear partnership to create trading cards for thousands of athletes and integrate them into a group licensing program, according to cllct’s Matt Liberman, who notes the first to ink deals under the partnership are Iowa State, UCLA, Washington, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Penn State. Iowa State and UCLA cards are already on-presale, while Washington will go live this week, with Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Penn State launching in early September. Student-athletes featured in the deal come from several sports, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, wrestling and more. ONIT Co-Founder Sheridan Hodson says the company is currently licensed at 96 universities across the country and adds: “We’re trying to win over every university…to work with every collegiate sport. It's important for those athletes to feel like they're getting paid their fair-market value to be part of our deals.” OneTeam’s Senior Director of College Strategy and Operations Aaron Solender says that having negotiated deals with over 12K student-athletes to use their NIL for College Football 25, they can facilitate the inclusion of those players at scale. “We can just kind of flip the switch. The more athletes we get into the program, the more opportunities we can bring to those athletes. And the more opportunities we have, the more athletes are going to want to sign on. And the flywheel keeps turning and turning.” (link)

The three largest private equity firms in the running to acquire stakes in NFL teams – Blackstone, Carlyle and Ares – have $1.9T in assets among them, according to Sportico’s Brendan Coffey, who asks why they would be interested in the comparatively small $19B up for grabs under the current proposal. Irwin Kishner, co-chair of the Sports Law Group at Herrick Feinstein, explains: “A lot of drops start coming and you get a puddle. Sports, live sports programming and gambling rights associated with that are a tremendous value proposition, where smart money sees opportunity to achieve the returns that they are looking to achieve. It’s still big numbers.” In fact, Coffey notes that over the past 20 years, the NFL’s total value has risen from $23.46B to $190B, a 710% gain. By comparison, the S&P 500 index has risen 660% the past 20 years. Not only do franchises provide outsized returns, but team values tend to be less volatile than other investments like stocks and bonds—or, in Wall Street-speak, they are more highly non-correlated with other securities, a characteristic valued by long-term investors that hand PE firms their money.” While Ares has soccer investments in Inter Miami, Olympique Lyonnais and Atlético Madrid, Blackstone and Carlyle “have barely dipped their toes into sports,” and Coffey notes: “Beyond seeking returns, Carlyle’s interest in sports could be driven by its recent aim to extend its business into private wealth management. Being able to own a sliver of an NFL franchise could have huge appeal to well-off clients who aren’t rich enough to buy into a team on their own.” More from Coffey. (link)

FuboTV Chair Edgar Bronfman Jr. has increased his bid for National Amusements and a minority stake in Paramount from $4.3B to $6B. Bronfman’s new offer includes $1.7B for a tender offer that would give non-Redstone, nonvoting Paramount shareholders an option to cash out at a premium of $16 a share, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Lauren Thomas and Jessica Toonkel, who note Bronfman’s initial bid didn’t offer Paramount’s Class B shareholders that option to cash out. They also point out that “Skydance’s $8B offer involves buying National Amusements and merging Skydance into Paramount. The deal would put $1.5B on Paramount’s balance sheet that can be used to pay down debt. Additionally, it would provide more than $4B to buy out about 50% of nonvoting Paramount shares at $15 each, or allow them to roll into the new company.” (link)

Valparaiso removes the interim tag from AD Laurel Hosmer, who has been leading the department since March. President José Padilla: “Laurel and I have worked together closely during her five months in the interim role, and it became incredibly clear that she was the right choice to lead our athletics department. While she possesses many strengths that will help her thrive in all aspects of this role, her expertise in athletics revenue generation was a particularly important factor. I look forward to seeing Laurel continue to make a positive impact on our institution.” (link)

Houston officially introduced Eddie Nuñez as its new AD today, and before he took the stage, UH President Renu Khator emphasized the need for the Cougars to take advantage of the resources the city has to offer to keep pace financially, noting that while there are 200K UH alumni, the city is home to 6M people. “We have to create value for our fan experience right here. We have to engage the city of Houston, we have to engage corporations, we have to monetize wherever possible the same things the other schools in our league are.” To that end, Nuñez vowed to “get out into the community. I will be out there, and so will our teams and coaches and staff. We will engage with supporters. Current, future fans, we’ll earn their trust. We’ll work towards one collective future. … We need the business community, alums, donors, I want everybody to be all in when it comes to making this happen. Our students – we’re going to get in there, we’re going to do what we need to do with the students, with the faculty, with the staff. We want to invest, but we want to do it the right way. We will not make excuses.” Also from Nuñez: “It doesn’t matter if you’re here or you’re anywhere, college athletics needs to be looking at things differently. Where we are today is student-athletes are going to be rev-sharing here sooner rather than later. … We’ve got to throw everything up against the wall and see what sticks and what is the best for our student-athletes, our coaches. I need to be able to provide more resources for our teams, our student-athletes to be successful, and so any ideas anybody may have, I’m going to listen. I’ve got the owner of the Rockets [in UH Board of Regents Chair Tilman Fertitta], you don’t think I’m going to sit down and find out what they do and how they do things differently?” Full presser. Houston also issued a statement regarding the request for a $10M loan to support the athletic department. The money will offset a $10M operating loss in FY24 and be paid back by the athletic department over time. “This was a strategic decision to provide financial support for UH athletics' operations during this transition into the Big 12 Conference. It is an exciting time for UH athletics and this strategic solution allows the university to support athletics during the conference transition without increasing subsidies to the program. The university has been clear that UH athletics is suspected to grow its revenue and is excited to watch our new athletics director help make this happen.” (link)

Clemson announces the launch of Clemson Ventures, a strategic entity designed with a commercial business structure and full-service marketing agency capabilities in order to increase revenue. Specifically, it will serve five key functions: multimedia rights integration, media and original content, sales and marketing, NIL operations and business operations. Tigers AD Graham Neff: “It's just a very natural time for us to study the next iteration of our in-house multimedia rights, coupled with the changing industry and need to commercialize our revenue operations and new assets available by way of NCAA deregulation.” Former Tigers Assoc. AD for Creative Solutions Jonathan Gantt, a consultant on the Clemson Ventures project, tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Athletics administrators are really great triage operators – every day any number of issues that are flying at them from every direction, they work to solve them and then they move to the next one. But there comes a point when managing through that non-stop triage isn't making you meaningful progress. You have to do what Graham is doing and step out, create a voice, assess what's going on, what's coming and build for the future, which is what this is about.” Clemson is in the process of hiring a CEO to oversee Clemson Ventures in a search being handled by TurnkeyZRG. (link); Neff also says he’s confident the Tigers will not have to cut sports as Clemson Ventures, he hopes, will help avoid pulling "levers other schools have to more highly consider." Neff on conference realignment and the Tigers’ legal tussle with the ACC: "We're going to continue to have our legal team work the legal process with it…and be great members of the conference we're in." He adds that conversations are “active.” Additionally, Clemson Ventures “is not built to be preventative of [private equity]. It builds a vehicle to be assertive in opportunities to generate revenues.” (link, link)

The Services Employees International Union Local 560, which represents the Dartmouth men’s basketball players, has filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB accusing the school of illegally refusing to bargain. Filed by New Hampshire labor attorney Jake Krupski on behalf of the Local 560, the charge refers to Dartmouth’s general counsel informing Krupski on March 18 the school was declining the union’s demand to negotiate. Sportico’s Michael McCann on what comes next: “If the NLRB concurs with the SEIU Local 560 about Dartmouth’s failure to bargain, it will instruct the school to bargain. If Dartmouth refuses to do so, the agency would then seek a court order to enforce its order, setting off a litigation process. The school might see the process as an opportunity to argue before a federal judge that the players aren’t employees and thus the school doesn’t need to bargain.” SEIU Local 560 President Chris Peck contends that Dartmouth’s “public refusal to bargain in good faith” is not only a violation of labor law but also “Dartmouth’s very own Code of Ethics.” He argues that Dartmouth concedes student employment is “entirely compatible with Dartmouth’s educational mission” but that the school is holding its varsity athletes “to a different standard than other students as laid out in the ‘student athlete handbook,’ as well as Ivy League and NCAA rules.” Dartmouth has subsequently released a statement which reads, in part: “In March, we appealed the regional director’s decision to the full NLRB and continue to await their review. In the meantime, we have declined to bargain with SEIU Local 560 on this matter. It is an unprecedented step in Dartmouth’s long history of labor negotiations, but it is the only lever we can engage to ensure this matter is reviewed by a federal court.” (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos talks with Ingram Smith, president of the Florida State-focused The Battle’s End collective, about the organization’s evolution, and Smith recalls saying at the outset: "I'm not going to tell you that I'm John Ruiz, and I have unlimited money. But I will tell you that we can be as competitive as we want to be in this space." As the landscape has changed, Smith says the question has become: "Do you keep the players in the program that you want to keep in the program? Our focus since day one has been retention. Candidly, we've never lost a player that we wholeheartedly didn't want to lose, even be that to the NFL Draft within reality. Jared Verse wasn't coming back for another year. We've kept guys that would have been fifth or sixth rounders that have come back and turned into second, third-rounders. … We were one of the first collectives to just say, 'Yeah, y'all are being very stupid if you're spending 70% of your money on high school kids.’ We went heavily into retention and portal. That has changed as Florida State has signed higher-ranked high school prospects and will continue to do so." Looking ahead, Smith tells Nakos: "I don't know that anybody can look themselves in the mirror and say, 'Hey, we're looking for sustainability. Either there has to be a massive course correction in spending, or we need to acknowledge that this is going to be a much different-looking model to continue to drive this thing." (link)

Superagent Drew Rosenhaus tells On3’s Phillip Dukes that student-athletes becoming employees would be a step in the right direction because “it would allow for a more structured approach to NIL. What we have right now is a very fragmented system that there's not a lot of rules and regulations. There's not a lot of, I think, structure." Rosenhaus also notes that as employees who could unionize, leagues and/or the NCAA could negotiate a football salary cap. "I believe in NIL, and I think it's great for everyone involved. But I do think that there needs to be structure, that all colleges in major conferences should operate with a salary cap like we have in professional sports. And I think structure would be great to give everybody a fair shot at being competitive, and we're not just seeing the collectives with the deep pockets dominate recruiting. It would be outstanding to see more of a level playing field and everybody operate within the same rules and structure." (link)

In the latest installment of CBS’ Candid Coaches series, CBS’ Matt Norlander and Gary Parrish ask the 100+ DI men’s basketball HCs and ACs they surveyed which program(s) they believe have the best NIL situation. Arkansas led the way by appearing on 73.7% of ballots, followed by Kansas (43.2%), BYU (30.6%), Kentucky (25.3%), Indiana (16.9%), Kansas State (13.7%), Baylor and Louisville (11.6%), Alabama (10.5%) and Illinois and Texas Tech (9.5%). One coach says: "This answer varies from week to week. One week on the road you hear Washington is offering a kid $2.3M, then you hear Kentucky and Louisville have offered more. At this point, no one knows what to truly believe with agents involved and trying to drive prices through the roof with false information." More, including the full list of schools that received votes. (link)

Penn State has received a $10M gift from an anonymous donor to support the renovations to Beaver Stadium. This gift is a unique symbol of a deep commitment to a significant priority. We are so thankful to have the support we have received in the early stages of fundraising for this project.” (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel reflects on the ACC Network’s first five years and notes its start was somewhat derailed by the COVID pandemic just seven months into its existence. ESPN Senior Director for Programming & Acquisitions Jeramy Michiaels, who oversees the ACCN: “For the network to still build and thrive and be the tremendous machine it is both for ESPN and the ACC here today speaks to the brand power of the ACC, speaks to the investment and the commitment from ESPN to make this network great.” As the network enters its sixth football season, the league’s TV revenue has increased from $288.6M in 2018-19, the final year without the network, to $481.7M in 2022-23.” Meanwhile, ESPN’s promotion of Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC has confirmed to some ACC fans the Worldwide Leader’s SEC bias, but Michiaels says: “I think that gets a lot of really good headlines and a lot of social media fodder. I’m responsible for the ACC’s relationship with ESPN every day, and what I see is a total commitment to the ACC. We have two conferences that we are, quote, all-in with, where we have all of the broadcast rights, and I don’t see a difference from ESPN’s standpoint. I think there are some personalities that may speak a little bit louder. … Although I hear that question a lot, I don’t know that the ACC needs a Paul Finebaum. I have definitely heard that the ACC would like a louder voice, and that’s something we’re always looking for, and when that opportunity presents itself, we will certainly pursue it. We are constantly evaluating what other voices we can bring to this network.” (link)
