ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg conducts a wide-ranging interview with Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, who explains his goal is to make sure the 18-team league’s football schedule is full of November games with College Football Playoff implications. "We've got some work to do to figure out what that [future model] is, because obviously, it has real impact on your regular season. You want to make sure that your teams have the ability to have a breakout season and qualify. And we also have to be realistic about what should get you access, in terms of number of wins. … When you're as deep as we are, we've got to do things to make sure that we have the access to the postseason that we think we deserve and has to be earned on the field. I'm a big believer in that, and that helps your regular season. More teams playing more meaningful games later in the season, I think we still can do more there." Petitti also talks about the joint advisory group with the SEC and explains it’s not meant to be an “isolation chamber,” adding: “I don't believe it puts us in an adversarial position with anybody else. It's just, we got to find some solutions here." Petitti insists he and Michigan AD Warde Manuel have moved past their friction regarding the former’s suspension of Jim Harbaugh and “even sat next to each other at a dinner the night before Michigan played Alabama in the CFP semifinal at the Rose Bowl.” (link)

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond answers a question about whether he was able to prepare in advance for former Football HC Chip Kelly’s departure and says: “My job as an AD is to be prepared. For anybody that thinks we weren’t prepared, I was prepared. I’m not living under a rock. I want someone that wants to be here. And we’re prepared. Every AD in the country has to have a list, has to have a process ready in case a coach gets hit by a bus or something happens. So, we were prepared and that’s why we were able to execute in under 60 hours.” Jarmond also says of NIL: “Everybody doesn’t know what everybody has. Every school says that they need more, but there’s a lot of numbers out there that don’t mean anything, so I don’t buy stock in, ‘We’re so behind.’ The fact is, we have guys that have NIL on the roster this year – we have plenty of them. Now, we’ve got to do that more. I think UCLA, usually we’re slower to new regulations because it was a murky time, but I’ll tell you since the end of the season we have done a lot more…I’ve had probably 16 appointments in the last three weeks talking about NIL. So, we understand the importance of it.” (link)

Also from Westwood, UCLA will place at least 1,000 students in the front rows of four sections directly behind the visiting team at the Rose Bowl next season. School officials say this will make UCLA the only Big Ten team to have its students sitting directly behind the opponent. Nick Brown, president of the student fan group The Den: “By moving closer to the action, our new student section will further elevate the in-game experience for students and student-athletes alike. Every eight-clap will mean that much more — and give our Bruins an even stronger home-field advantage.” (link); Here’s a look at the new configuration via the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch. (link)

Immigration attorney Amy Maldonado last week sent a letter to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Chief Counsel Ashley Tabaddor and U.S. Department of State attorney-advisor Theresa Repede urging them to consider how adopting an employee model in college athletics would impact international student-athletes: “The characterization of F-1 international student-athletes as workers, or employees, makes urgent the need to clarify what F-1 international student-athletes may and may not do without violating their F-1 nonimmigrant student status and jeopardizing future visa renewals. We believe that this decision by the NLRB makes it critically important that guidance be issued by DHS and State as soon as possible to the more than 20,000 international student collegiate athletes (who may now be found retroactively to have violated status by USCIS, ICE, CBP or State based on the recharacterization of at least some of their athletics program activities as ’employment’).” On3’s Eric Prisbell notes that 12% of DI student-athletes come from overseas, including four on the Dartmouth men’s basketball team. College Football Realignment publisher Bill Farley shares some takeaways from Florida State’s Project Osceola documents, starting with the inclusion of the Catalyst Healthcare and Real Estate logo. “Project Osceola’s objective is to raise money for FSU’s exit from the ACC and compete with other national college football programs. One way to meet this objective could be to attach themselves financially to a strong medical system.” Farley notes that UC Davis “parlayed land donated by the State of California into a ground lease with a third party that wanted to be proximate to the research conducted by the University’s medical system. UC Davis then turned to the City of Sacramento to grab a significant public subsidy for the private project - marketed as an ‘Innovation Center.’ The heavily redacted cash flow statements disclosed by FSU may have revenue from a partnership with FSU’s medical system. Watch for this in future reports.” Farley also highlights an email exchange between FSU’s advisor (JP Morgan) and FSU’s staff, which identifies a redacted new revenue source. “That they are still in the due diligence phase and focused on minor expense categories like buildings and grounds [nine months into the project] tells me they are having difficulty finding the cash flow to support the hefty financial needs of a private equity firm/investor.” There is also a section titled “Updated Prudence and Ethical Standards” which has new language to include procedures that protect FSU staff if adverse credit or market events occur. Farley: “In a cache of emails about making risky investment decisions, how odd is it to find staff changing university policies to protect themselves against risky investment decisions? That is a rhetorical question.” (link)

The DI Men’s Basketball Committee is holding its selection orientation meeting this week in preparation for the Bracket Preview Show, which airs this Saturday, and NCAA Director of Media Coordination/Statistics David Worlock notes that “80 of the 96 teams (83.3%) that were part of the Bracket Preview Shows remained among the top four seeds when the actual bracket was announced on Selection Sunday. Of the 16 teams that did not remain on the top four lines on Selection Sunday, nine were a No. 4 seed on the Bracket Preview Show. Only one No. 2 seed fell off the top four lines, while six No. 3 seeds failed to stay a top four seed. In 2017, 2022 and 2023, 15 of the 16 teams revealed during the Bracket Preview Show remained in the top 16 on Selection Sunday. In 2018, 13 of the 16 teams remained the same, while 11 teams stayed the same in 2019 and 2021. In each of the first 5 years of the Bracket Preview Show (removing the 2020 program because of the tournament being canceled), 3 of the 4 No. 1 seeds all remained on the 1 line. In 2023, all four No. 1 seeds from the Bracket Preview Show were also 1 seeds on Selection Sunday. In summary, 24 of 24 No. 1 seeds stayed in the top 16, while 23 of 24 No. 2 seeds, 18 of 24 No. 3 seeds, and 15 of 24 No. 4 seeds remained among the top 16 teams on Selection Sunday.” (link)

More than 4,000 fans have attended each of the last three home matchups, and USF reports that nearly 8,000 tickets had been sold for this weekend’s contest against FAU, putting in a trajectory to fill the 9,500-seat Yuengling Center. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver joins the Pat McAfee Show and discusses the future of streaming vs. linear and cites the Super Bowl as an example of the power linear still wields: “People forget, too, that rating we all hear about, that's the average number of people per minute, so the total people in the U.S. who will have watched some portion of the Super Bowl is 200M. … Everybody talks about the [124M], but I would be talking about the 200M because that’s the number of people watching.” Silver goes on to note of live sports in general: “What else brings people in a divided world, divided country, where everybody comes together for a game and, by the way, not just for the game, but everybody accepts that these are the rules of the game that when the game is over this is the team who won. … I just think where the NFL has done a fantastic job is commanding traditional broadcast television.” Streaming, on the other hand, is the best way for the NBA to reach a younger audience. Silver explains: “If you think about what’s happening in traditional television…it’s largely younger people who either never subscribe to cable or cut the cord economically. So, that portion of our fan base tends to be very young, probably the youngest of the major sports. They become disenfranchised if our games are on ESPN and TNT and ABC but they're not subscribing to traditional cable or satellite. They’re feasting on social media and TikTok or Instagram or whatever and getting a lot of highlights and stuff, but they're not watching our games. So, partly for us in terms of going to streaming, we want to make sure that our fan base can” access the games. More from Silver. (link)

Puck’s Julia Alexander asks who the ESPN-Fox-Warner Bros. Discovery sports streamer (“Spulu”) is for and writes: “After talking to people across the industry, I can tell you the answer isn’t what you think. This unnamed service may be ostensibly geared towards the never-cord consumer or the post-cord consumer or the cable-frustrated consumer, but it’s really an R&D lab for its proprietors, especially [Disney CEO Bob] Iger.” Particularly vexing is why ESPN would announce this platform the day before it announced it would launch its own DTC app in 2025. Alexander believes the latter, as Iger described it, is “exactly what the future of sports media should be. … In the interim, however, the number of sports streaming options makes the balkanized sports viewing experience even more incomprehensible and annoying. In an effort to solve customers’ frustration, we’ve only made it more frustrating. Spulu embodies this problem as much as it solves it.” In fact, according to a study from LG’s Advertisement division, the biggest barrier to entry for streaming customers was that there are too many choices. Ultimately, Alexander is skeptical that Spulu, if it comes to fruition, will have legs: “Unspoken in the announcement is the reality that Spulu is an experiment, not an end state. … The skinny bundle works for now; it’s certainly not going to work forever. And by then, who knows what Fox and WBD even look like.” Lots more. (link)

As the sun appears to be setting on Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff’s tenure, JohnCanzano.com’s namesake looks back at the past three years, which he contends were “marred by betrayal, back-biting, and dissension by the conference’s presidents and chancellors. Kliavkoff’s failure to manage his board became a glaring problem and his biggest misfire. Above the board-room table, the Pac-12 CEO Group members smiled, discussed business, and plodded along, but below it, they had guns pointed at each other.” One league AD tells Canzano: “A very nice guy, but George may be incompetent.” That said, Canzano attributes the Pac-12’s downfall to multiple factors, including Kliavkoff’s missteps, former Commissioner Larry Scott’s leadership, for-profit media companies. One Pac-12 exec tells him: “Fox screwed us and I would argue that after that initial ESPN offer in the fall, ESPN was no friend.” Ultimately, though, the league dissolved on Kliavkoff’s watch, and Canzano asks: “Can you fire someone with cause for being ‘too nice’ and ‘too trusting?’ How about ‘too easily played’ by others? I’m asking because those are phrases that come up when Kliavkoff is talked about. At some point, I’m certain Kliavkoff will go public with his side of the story. And I’d love to hear it.” (link)

More from Texas AD Chris Del Conte’s town hall, during which he pointed out that in 1903 the Longhorns were members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, a precursor to the SEC. “That was where we were at one time, and we’re just going home. … We’re in a place that the brands we’re going to get to play and who we’re going to be a part of, it makes sense. We’re not flying from coast to coast. We’re not going up and down. We’re in a region that makes sense to us, the South, and the teams we get to play.” While the SEC continues to ponder a nine-game football schedule after the next two seasons, Del Conte says the only way he could envision playing a Big 12 team was if they came to Austin. “If they want to come play here at Texas, I’m all in. I’m not sure yet how we can do a home-and-home until I know how all that balances out.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel doesn't expect former Football HC Jim Harbaugh’s departure to significantly impact the NCAA’s investigations into potential violations. “It just will continue to move forward, and we'll see where it goes from there. We'll continue to work with them. We'll continue to support their efforts to investigate." Manuel also addressed the departures of several FB ACs, explaining that he had already planned on adding "a couple million dollars" to the salary pool before Harbaugh left and that both he and HC Sherrone Moore have made efforts to retain as many ACs as possible. "I won't go into details, but all those discussions have occurred. People made choices to leave. It wasn't because of a lack of effort on our part to keep people here." (link)
|
Michigan AD Warde Manuel also says he continues to support Men’s Basketball HC Juwan Howard: “It would be fair to say I have not really thought about any changes in our men’s basketball program at this time. It’s one of those things that — I guess I can’t say it any clearer; I want to support Juwan to be successful and have not given any moment or thought of anything about changes at this time. And so my support is of him, of our student-athletes, and our staff. … Juwan and I have talked, yes. And we’ll continue to have those conversations as the season goes through and I continue to support him in an effort to turn this around and win like he expects to. There’s no lack of effort from our student-athletes or coaches. And it’s a lack of execution at times and we have to be better — he knows that, they know that and expectations are high, but I will continue to have the conversations with him. And we’ll continue to support him in our program and continue to be there for him.” (link)

College football officials later this month are expected to discuss the addition of a two-minute warning, and NCAA National Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw tells The Athletic’s Chris Vannini: “With our change in the clock rules, we have a number of things that hinge on a certain period in the game, like the first down situation. If you had a definitive two-minute break, then you could flip all of your clock rules. Like today, the 10-second runoff (for penalty and injury timeouts) doesn’t kick in until one minute (left). So we think there might be some value in having a two-minute stop and then now we go to post-timing rules and make all of it contingent on the two-minute.” While a two-minute warning as a free timeout runs the risk of lengthening the game, Shaw said it could simply fill the place of an existing TV timeout and adds: “We’d really like to avoid the back-to-backs. Nobody likes that. If we did it, the media partner would have to hold their last timeout to that, so they couldn’t get their timeouts in and then get a freebie. It would be the last media timeout and give them assurance they’ll get them all in. I think TV would be supportive of it.” (link)

The ACC wrapped up its winter meetings today. The three-day confabulation included individual and joint sessions attended by league ADs, FARs and SWAs, updates and presentations from ESPN and ACC Network, ACC CORE (Champions of Racial Equity) and the ACC SAAC. Additional discussion topics included the selection of the 2024 ACC Postgraduate Scholar-Athletes, conference revenues, the College Football Playoff, the use of helmet technology in football, future men’s and women’s basketball scheduling and the postseason, recommendations from the Olympic Sport Committees and discussions around Olympic Sport policies and procedures. In men’s and women’s basketball specifically, the membership determined that for the 2024-25 season, the top 15 teams would compete in the conference tournaments. Additionally, the league decided the men’s basketball regular season will continue with a 20-game conference slate while the women will continue to play an 18-game campaign. For the 2024 football season ACC teams will be provided with access to in-game video and coach-to-player communication devices that will allow for one-way communication between the sideline and player(s) on the field. Conference leaders also announced Wake Forest President Susan Wente will serve as the Vice-Chair of the league’s Board of Directors through the remainder of the 2023-24 academic year and throughout 2024-25, replacing former North Carolina Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz. Indiana finished FY23 with a $5.6M surplus with $144.7M in revenue and $139M in expenses. The Hoosiers’ revenue included $47.8M in media rights distributions, $24.5M in ticket sales and $19.6M in donor contributions. Men’s basketball ticket sales came in at $12.2M, while football ticket sales were $10.3M. Expenses included $25.9M in coaches’ salaries, $23.8M in support staff salaries, $19.1M in student aid and $5.3M in game guarantees. The financial report does not include former Football HC Tom Allen’s buyout, which will be reflected in next year’s accounting, and Hoosiers AD Scott Dolson notes: “We have gifts coming in over time. We’re taking out a loan for the immediate expenses. What it will show (next year) is higher expenses, but also an influx of a loan that we will be paying off over time with donor funds and operating money we put towards that. It should not affect a profit or a loss. It should be a wash in fiscal year 2024.” (link)

Ohio State has parted ways with Men’s Basketball HC Chris Holtmann, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, who points out the decision was made by Buckeyes AD Gene Smith and not incoming AD Ross Bjork. The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn pulls back the curtain on BYU’s first men’s hoops season in the Big 12 and notes that “on-court success is required at BYU not for banners, but for the mission. As the school sees it, winning begets attention, attention begets interest, interest spreads the word.” In fact, BYU Advancement VP Keith Vorkink tells Quinn: “It would be remarkable if people could understand how much interest there is from the leadership of our church in our athletic programs. They’re not thinking, let’s go win a championship because that’s cool.” Vorkink also acknowledges that the scope of the job has changed for Cougars HC Mark Pope: “We wrestle with this. When I visit with Mark, we say, ‘We gotta live in the tension.’ That’s how we describe it. We can’t run from the tension.” At the same time, Vorkink understands that “Mark has a brutal job. He’s a coach in the Big 12 and we’re asking him to do it a different way. There is an element that is like, we’re constraining him, we’re keeping him from just leaning into the way that people think about being successful in basketball. But we think there’s a space for a successful program that doesn’t do it like everyone else. Time will tell.” (link)

Michigan is creating an executive general manager (EGM) position in partnership with Altius Sports Partners and a senior manager of business development in collaboration with LEARFIELD and Michigan Sports Properties. The dedicated roles through ASP and Learfield provide a crucial step forward in supporting and empowering our student-athletes while combining three powerful brands aligned to capitalize on the dynamic opportunities within the realm of NIL." Hawai’i unveils its newly renovated Alexander Waterhouse Sports Performance Facility. The $3.3M upgrade features 24 Samson Power Racks and a new nutrition center within the 10,000-square-foot training area. Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos: “The thing that stands out to me when we do a weight room is the strength and conditioning is for everybody, and it’s used more than any other facility in our athletics department. This is the one that affects everybody.” Have a look. (link)

Evansville announces a $1.2M renovation project to upgrade current intramural fields and provide opportunities for the Purple Aces soccer programs. The project will also create room for students to engage in recreational activities. Purple Aces AD Ziggy Siegfried: "We are excited to unveil this project, which was an excellent collaboration between our campus and athletics. Our goal was to bring about a positive impact to the entire community and we are confident that will be accomplished with this initiative. Following the land sale to Wesselman Woods, it was critical to find our soccer programs an area to replace what was lost and also enhance the overall experience. Knowing our entire student body can utilize the space at any time of year and any type of weather makes this accomplishment even more meaningful." (link)
