Saint Augustine’s accreditation with the SACSCOC has been reinstated after being the first school to move forward to arbitration with the SACSCOC. The remains on probation and has until December to resolve all issues of non-compliance. SAU will welcome students back to campus this fall. Board of Trustees Chair Brian Boulware: “The SACSCOC arbitration committee’s decision serves as a pivotal moment for SAU’s redemption and renewal. The unanimous reversal by the arbitration committee rightfully corrects the injustice inflicted upon SAU by SACSCOC’s initial ruling and underscores the university’s steadfast commitment to excellence and growth.” (link)

Slippery Rock AD Roberta Page sits down with D2.ticker/Collegiate Sports Connect’s Bryan Fischer from the 2024 NACDA Convention to dive into key issues facing the division as a member of the DII Management Council, staff retention, what’s next for The Rock and more. On what is next for the Management Council: “I think we're moving the division forward. I love the leadership we have at the NCAA so I'm excited to see about this regionalization discussion, the think tank that's going to happen with getting some great leaders across the country, getting some student-athletes involved in there just to talk about what's happening in our division, what do we need to be talking about so that we can continue to thrive. I think some membership issues may be coming our way especially for schools that maybe are at the lower Division I level that maybe can't sustain what they're doing and maybe they'll look to see if Division II is a better fit for them.” Asked about the key to retaining coaches and staff: “I always want our staff to feel like they're valued, that their voice is heard, that I recognize that, that I celebrate that and that I care about them. I do whatever I can to push whether it's for recognition, better facilities, whether we're able to buy them something just to enhance their program, I always want our coaches and our staff to feel like I have their back all the time.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. New Millersville AD/former Cabrini (formerly DIII) AD Kate Corcoran chats with BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott about Cabrini’s closure, the announcement and aftermath, managing the final year and more. Asked about whether having a final year to close out the department was preferable to an abrupt closure, Corcoran says she went back and forth about which process was preferable, with the final year allowing student-athletes, coaches and staff more time to find their next home, alumni to celebrate the department’s history and more. Cabrini planned to have all sports compete during the final year, but pulled the plug on a few sports once they reached the lowest starting roster size. On conversations with the NCAA before the announcement regarding athletics’ future, Corcoran: “If you are able to maintain independence in the eyes of the Department of Education, the NCAA really doesn't care how you operate. It's just a matter of if you are an independent university within the eyes of the Department of Education, you can maintain independence.” Corcoran says she did not put thought into her next role until December or January, with an emphasis on finishing out the year, which Millersville allowed her to do. Meta Strategic Partner Manager for Athletes Rebecca Wathen joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss Meta’s new partnership with the NCAA. The partnership features the expansion of Meta’s NIL Empower Program, which seeks to provide female student-athletes with additional NIL opportunities via Meta’s three platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Wathen notes that “this team didn’t exist three years ago but when NIL passed, we realized internally, this is a big opportunity. … This opens up a brand new crop of nearly 400K athletes a year that need guidance on how to take advantage of this.” Wathen goes on to share insight into the process for selecting student-athlete participants for the program and how Meta can help those athletes learn about their identity outside the sport they play. On the selection process: “We looked at a number of different factors. The first was their social media profile. We wanted a mix of diverse group of more experienced content creators, but also athletes who were just getting started and wanted to learn. So, first thing we're taking a look at your profile, we're seeing if you're consistent, if you’ve posted some Reels, if you have some base-level knowledge of content creation. We're looking at diversity of race, of sport, of school because we try to get an even mix of all representation of sports and schools [from] Division I to Division III. We also have a short-answer section because we want athletes that are leaned in and motivated and that we know are going to take it seriously.” More on ADU. (link)

Holloway, co-founder and president, has been the technician, the manager, and the entrepreneur throughout the company's existence. Abercrombie started in an entry-level position and has worked his way up to the #3 executive within the organization. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved modifying video review challenges of runners leaving a base early on a pitch in softball. Under the new rule, coaches can challenge whether a runner left early if it is called on the field by an umpire or if a runner successfully advances a base on the play. However, the video review challenge would not be allowed on home runs, ground-rule doubles, foul balls and other scenarios. Other rule changes include allowing umpires to initiate a video review without requiring a coach's challenge at any point in the game when a play is not properly covered by an umpire and changing the penalty for pitch clock violations by the pitcher or catcher to an illegal pitch. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel also approved an optional rule to allow video review challenges for all women's lacrosse games and allot coaches two review challenges per game beginning with the 2025 season. Other rule changes include: “Charging will no longer result in a one-minute releasable penalty between the restraining lines. Instead, it will be categorized as a general foul for the upcoming season. Another tweak to an existing rule is that on a ‘simultaneous whistle,’ where the goalkeeper saves the ball inside or outside the goal circle but does not maintain possession, play will continue; a free position no longer will be awarded to the goalkeeper.” More on the video review guidelines. Continuing the theme, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved modifying the video review criteria in men's lacrosse so coaches can make challenges using the previously approved situations within the criteria at any point in the game, effective for the 2025 season. Officials can initiate video review only in the last four minutes of regulation and in any overtime period. Under the new rule, officials can initiate reviews to identify participants in a fight or determine whether flagrant misconduct or unsportsmanlike conduct or contact to the head and/or neck took place at any time in the game. Another scenario that was added to the video review criteria will allow coaches to challenge whether a valid shot deflected off the goalie or the goal pipe to see whether the shot clock should be reset. Officials can initiate this type of video review, starting with the last four minutes of regulation. The panel also approved an adjustment to the faceoff officiating mechanic. Other rule changes: Players established in the defensive half of the field will only be able to bat or deflect the ball with their crosse to keep it in the offensive half of the field. Body contact with the ball will result in an over-and-back violation. A suspended coach or any other personnel cannot be in the confines of the venue from the time the team arrives until officials leave the field after the contest. Clear mouthguards will be permitted. Finally, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved placing red markings at each end of the men’s and women’s water polo field of play boundary lines to denote the goal area, effective for the 2024-25 season. Other rules changes include requiring member of the coaching staff to report a change in cap numbers to the referee; allowing the referee to issue warnings if delays in substitutions interfere with the progress of the game; and requiring individuals who receive a red card to leave the venue and remain out of sight and sound until the conclusion of the game.
