+ Cal State San Marcos removes the interim tag from AD Morod Shah, who has been leading the Cougars since April. Shah: “Over the last 25 years in CSUSM athletics, we have been able to grow and evolve as a department at an unprecedented rate, and I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the growth over the last 11 years here. + Point Loma promotes Assoc. AD for Event Operations Jordan Courneya to Interim AD. President Bob Brower: “President-Elect Fulcher and I have been working to provide support and to evaluate the Athletic Department's current needs and how we can provide continuity in the coming academic year. Naming Jordan Courneya as Interim Athletic Director provides that consistency. Jordan has been around our program for two decades and is well respected by coaches, players and staff.” (link)

The DII Management Council is sponsoring legislation to permit student-athletes to compete in 30% of the maximum number of permissible contests without exhausting a season of competition across all sports. The following five membership proposals have been referred to committees: providing Football AQs for all participating conferences, allowing teams in their championship segment to countable athletically related activities on Election Day provided student-athletes are given a day off within 15 days before or after Election Day, requiring a medical exam of student-athletes within one prior to participation, allowing Wrestling student-athletes to compete in four competition dates without using a season of competition and permitting the DII ITA Indoor Tournament to count as a date of competition. The Council also approved changes to awards, benefits and expenses rules to “provide more autonomy to schools and simplify their application. Some amendments include eliminating the awards legislation to permit Division II schools and conferences to use their discretion to provide student-athletes with awards, as well as deregulating the occasional meals legislation.” (link)

MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy chats with the Topeka Capital-Journal’s Liam Keating about DII Football playoff expansion, which Racy would love to see expand to 36 “but we will take 32. That’s been stuck in the bureaucracy of Division II because it was forwarded outside the budget approval cycle.” Racy hopes the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee can push expansion through, adding: “If they don’t, it probably won’t be in place until the fall of 2027.” On other playoff changes he would like to see, Racy: “What needs to change is the whole process of how teams are selected and how they are bracketed. I think we could have regionalization for the automatic qualifier, but when it comes to at-large teams. We should be comparing regions with other regions. […] You can still bracket with teams going out of their region that is not costing the division more money for its championship expenses. I think regions play a part in how we schedule, but I think the way that we select teams for the playoffs and the way that we bracket are things that could change.” (link)

With sideline tablets coming for Football this season, the LSC is partnering with SkyCoach and limiting institutions to a maximum of six, below the 18 tablet maximum, to help with the cost. On the potential for the sideline replay system to be used during the playoffs, LSC Commissioner Jay Poerner: “That was a hot topic at the NCAA Division II football committee meeting. My guess is that it’s probably not going to be permissible. Not everyone is using this technology or going to use it the same way we do. We are limiting ourselves to six (tablets), but technically you can have 18, so our schools could be at a disadvantage if other schools maximize their allotment. I don’t think we’ll be able to use it in the playoffs this year, but hopefully we can advance that in the future.” (link)

The GLVC announces it will begin sponsoring Men’s Volleyball as the league’s 25th sport starting in the 2025-26 academic year. The opening campaign will feature seven institutions, including full-time league members Maryville, Missouri S&T, Quincy, Rockhurst and Southwest Baptist, as well as associate members Roosevelt and Thomas More. Holy Family announces plans to add Women’s Flag Football with play in the Atlantic East slated to begin in Spring 2025. With the introduction, HFU becomes the first Philadelphia institution to add the sport at the varsity level. (link)
