(link); Commissioner Patrick Colbert sat down with The Adddrop Podcast’s Terrance Biggs to discuss the name change and says the idea of a new name actually began on his first day with one of the league’s presidents. “Now, I know that a lot of folks out there in our region certainly can combat that and say that New England's in almost every conference name in our region and that's correct; however, no conference really emphasizes that in their name and we wanted to do that. We wanted to show that the brand of New England, the region that our coaches are recruiting to, the region that our institutions are recruiting students to, is one of the best, if not the best, in our division from a number of categories, from academic prestige to competitive prestige to just the amount of institutions we have in our region, that captures so many different demographics from across our country and a lot are in our conference. We felt like our names should speak to some of that. […] There's not that many conference names out there that aren't already taken and with the idea of being unique, with the idea of leading with conference of versus putting conference at the back end of our name was something we felt hasn't really been done in our division, and even nationally, amongst Divisions I, II and III, for the most part, felt like that would help us stand out a little bit more.” More. Kalamazoo will bring back Men’s and Women’s Track & Field, starting in 2025-26, after more than four decades. Cross Country HC Kyle Morrison will lead the new program. AD Jamie Zorbo says the Hornets will hire a new AC and athletic trainer and practice at nearby Western Michigan (DI), with WMU or Kalamazoo Christian High School to serve as potential sites if it were to host an event. Zorbo: “There are several instances each year where students who have been interested in coming to Kalamazoo College and participating in one particular sport and track and field. They typically have gone elsewhere because we haven't offered track and field for many years. We feel there's an opportunity to bring in those students and students who want to compete solely in track and field as well.” (link)

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit yesterday enjoined the Department of Education from enforcing the 2024 Title IX Rule in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. SAFE Campuses President S. Daniel Carter adds that the “plaintiffs' request was limited to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina, but…the administrative injunction doesn't enumerate where the 2024 Title IX Rule is enjoined.” (link)

The Federal Reserve kept its key interest rate unchanged at a 23-year high of 5.3%, despite calls from some economists and Democratic politicians to implement a cut Wednesday; however, Fed Chair Jerome Powell left the door open to a potential cut in September. “We’re getting closer to the point at which it’ll be appropriate to reduce our policy rate, but we’re not quite at that point.” (link)
