#4: Shippensburg Senior Associate AD/SWA/incoming DII Management Council Chair Michaels sits down with D2.ticker/Connect’s Fischer to dive into key topics discussed at the NCAA Convention, DI changes that may trickle down to DII, higher education trends she and her PSAC peers are keeping an eye on and much more. Michaels on possible championships changes, given discussions at the DI level: “We have our regionalization model and I don’t anticipate us moving away from that. I think there’s always ways that we can make improvements, but we’ve worked very hard to put that model into place and it allows us to have the best access to championships among all of the divisions. So that gives us an opportunity for more championship participation opportunities for our student-athletes. I think there’s ways you can always tweak it whether it’s trying to make sure you don’t have the same first round matchups that you’re seeing in conference championships, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. There’s so much diversity across the country, as far as locale and where we’re playing and we still have to have a model where we can have those championships and have that access and actually do it from an appropriate financial standpoint.” Michaels also notes the DII Championships Committee to look at increased championship flexibility following a recommendation from the DII Implementation Committee. #2: The DII membership approved 11 of 12 proposals, with the proposal to expand coaches’ access to S-As in the summer defeated 74-222. Palm Beach Atlantic AD/DII Management Council member Lovely Evans on the lone defeated proposal: “While these are 'voluntary' activities, the potential pressure placed on student-athletes to take advantage of these opportunities may lead to student-athletes forgoing summer activities such as internships, study abroad or jobs, things that help our Division II student-athletes become more well-rounded individuals.” The elimination of standardized test score requirements, pair of FB changes and changes to agent definitions will go into effect August 1, with the changes to the DII governance structure to begin February 1, 2024. DII also became the first division to approve stunt as an emerging sport for women. More. (link)

#1: PacWest Commissioner Hogue will retire at the end of the academic year after 16 seasons leading the conference. Azusa Pacific AD Pine: “The PacWest is Bob Hogue. The growth, sustainability and viability of this conference over the past 16 years are his indelible signature on this conference. With great patience, diligence and wisdom he deftly navigated the challenges of a conference that represents every type of higher education institution and membership, that at times spanned across four time zones. I know he is deeply proud of the PacWest, and in turn we are as proud of him and forever grateful for his impact on us.” (link)
