Latest from Ann Arbor…
+ A former employee at a Big Ten football program yesterday revealed it was his job to steal signs and that “he was given details from multiple conference schools before his team played Michigan to compile a spreadsheet of play-calling signals used by the Wolverines last year,” according to the AP’s Larry Lage. The employee, who came forth anonymously for fear of the disclosures hurting his coaching career, tells Lage he shared the documents with Michigan, which showed the Wolverines’ signs and corresponding plays, after his school faced U-M in 2022. Lage: “The person also passed along screenshots of text-message exchanges with staffers from a handful of Big Ten football teams with Michigan, giving the program proof that other conference teams were colluding to steal signs from the Wolverines. … The alleged actions by Michigan’s opponents potentially violate the Big Ten’s sportsmanship policy, which is being used as the basis of the conference’s case against Michigan. The school and the Big Ten confirmed Monday that Michigan had received notification of potential disciplinary action from the conference.” (link)
+ The Big Ten on Saturday formally notified Michigan about potential disciplinary action under the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy and informed the school it has until Wednesday to respond, per The Detroit News’ Angelique Chengelis. Wolverines Assoc. AD for Public and Media Relations David Ablauf has confirmed U-M’s receipt of the notification. Chengelis also reports the notice does not specify any potential suspension for Football HC Jim Harbaugh but does outline the allegations that the league continues to investigate. (link)
+ The NCAA has turned over its findings of the investigation to Michigan, and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger and Dan Wetzel report there is nothing that connects the in-person scouting and recording of opponents’ sidelines to Harbaugh. Despite that, they note that Big Ten Commissioner Petitti is “believed to have proposed a multi-game suspension for Harbaugh,” which is “expected to be met with legal action from both the coach and school. … While under NCAA bylaws head coaches are presumed responsible for a staff member’s actions, the Big Ten sportsmanship policy does not feature such a clause.” Dellenger and Wetzel subsequently ask whether the Big Ten can apply an NCAA bylaw to override its own bylaw and suspend Harbaugh, and Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter explains: “The school or Harbaugh would have to present a cause of action. That could be a lack of due-process claim or a failure to follow procedural rules.” A judge could issue a temporary restraining order to reinstate Harbaugh until a more permanent decision is made from the courts through a preliminary injunction. (link)
+ The NCAA yesterday notified the Big Ten that there are “no known connections between Ohio State head coach Ryan Day or his family and the conference's investigation into Michigan,” according to Dellenger. (link)

The Field of 68’s Rob Dauster sounds off on the lack of intriguing games to start the men’s basketball season: “We need to get the the coaches out of the decision-making process when it comes to the schedules because part of the reason that we have this issue is that all these coaches aren't going to want to play games that actually matter before they really feel like they know what they have with their team. And it's the regular season, man, you’ve got to start playing games. College basketball is the only sport we say we're going to have this soft opening because we don't want to be ready to play real games during the regular season. No, it's not like Major League teams play Double A teams in the first game of the regular season. It’s not like you have the Lakers out here playing G League opponents in the first game of the regular season. … It’s very frustrating that, more and more, as these major networks divest themselves from college basketball, as the biggest media outlets in the United States of America find ways to take college basketball programming off of their airwaves that we are sitting here saying, ‘You know what let's not have a great opening day.’” (link)

UTSA has received a $500K gift from former AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre and his wife, Linda, to support construction of a 50K-square-foot basketball and volleyball training facility. The new building will feature two full-size NCAA practice courts, a 3K-square-foot weight room, a 1K-square-foot training room for sports medicine, locker rooms, and coaches’ offices. Roadrunners AD Lisa Campos: “The Whitacre family's investment in our state-of-the-art basketball and volleyball training facility will elevate the training experience for our dedicated student-athletes and is exemplary of the limitless potential of Roadrunner Athletics. Ed and Linda’s enduring support has played a pivotal role in propelling our relentless pursuit of excellence, both on and off the court, and is shaping the future of our athletes and our institution.” The gift is part of a $1M overall commitment to the university. Sportico’s Michael McCann takes a deeper look into the Dartmouth men’s basketball team’s argument for unionization and points out that the absence of an athletic scholarship is “not determinative, the players argue, especially since they and other Ivy League athletes might receive a better deal. This begins with recruiting and admissions. The athletes’ applications aren’t subject to the normal admissions process, where a mere 6% of applicants are accepted into Dartmouth, one of the most selective colleges in America (the median SAT is a lofty 1520). Instead, the players’ applications are given an ‘early read’ that is more favorable.” Furthermore, Dartmouth covers full tuition for students whose annual family income is less than $125K , meaning players “receive what is tantamount to a four-year guaranteed contract to attend an Ivy League school that costs about $85K a year to attend. As even Dartmouth officials testified, basketball players who quit, are cut or are dismissed from the team remain as students; they don’t lose a dime in aid by leaving the team.” More from McCann, including how the players’ work in soliciting donations factors in. Two former New Mexico State men’s basketball student-athletes and a student manager filed a lawsuit in which they allege their teammates frequently brought guns into the locker room. Former player Kyle Feit, along with a teammate and student manager who did not want their names used, filed the lawsuit against the school, Aggies AD Mario Moccia and former coaches and players. According to the suit, Feit included his name because “his interest in speaking out and holding all of the defendants accountable outweighs his desire to protect his personal privacy interests." All three plaintiffs also allege they were victimized by the sexual assault detailed by former team members Shak Odunewu and Deuce Benjamin. (link)

“A group of 16 women who allege Montana’s state system of higher education fostered a ‘culture of gender discrimination’ have asked a federal judge for class certification in their sex discrimination lawsuit, nearly 13 months to the day after the court denied them certification for lacking commonality.” More from behind the Law360 paywall. This, too, from Law360: “A Grambling State University basketball player has urged an Indiana federal judge not to throw out her proposed race bias class action targeting the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program, accusing the organization of reading her complaint too narrowly in an attempt to escape the suit.” More. Looks like the Quiet Quitting era may be over, as employers now say there aren’t enough people voluntarily leaving their jobs. According to the Wall Street Journal’s Chip Cutter, turnover has “declined so steeply at some large employers that companies now find themselves over budget on certain teams, requiring leaders to weigh whether to postpone projects or to cut additional staff as the end of year approaches. Other bosses worry about how to keep star employees engaged when there are far fewer vacant positions internally, making it harder to move people into new roles.” Hiring slowed sharply in October, with U.S. employers adding half as many jobs as they did in September, according to the Labor Department. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate rose from 3.8% from 3.9% but is still hovering around historic lows. Nationally, the quits rate, which is defined as the number of resignations as a share of total employment, remained at 2.3% in September for the third month in a row, down from a 3% peak in April 2022. Michigan AD Warde Manuel will not travel to the College Football Playoff Selection Committee meetings in Dallas this week but “instead will stay in Ann Arbor, attending to important matters regarding the ongoing investigation into our football program. I look forward to being back in the room with fellow committee members next week and every week through the end of the season.” (link)

From Action Network’s Brett McMurphy: “Michigan has received notice from the Big Ten indicating specific sign stealing allegations but it does not indicate what penalties would be administered, UM sources said. UM has until Wednesday to respond to Big Ten, source said. The Big Ten’s pursuit of penalties against Michigan and/or Jim Harbaugh is viewed as a ‘PR stunt’ in response to public pressure & in light of the conference’s lack of action up to this point, source said. UM will legally fight any disciplinary actions, which potentially would block any suspensions from occurring this season, sources said.” (link)

The NCAA is investigating the identity of a man resembling former Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions on the Central Michigan sideline this season. Chippewas AD Amy Folan in a statement to ESPN has confirmed that CMU continues to “review the matter in cooperation with the NCAA.” ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg notes the “NCAA's involvement likely will extend the timeline for the investigative process and any potential discipline. Its findings could be included in a larger notice of allegations for Michigan, which has yet to be sent.” Meanwhile, Michigan State Department of Computer Science and Engineering professor Anil Jain, a “nationally recognized facial recognition expert,” tells ESPN it’s highly likely that Stalions is, in fact, the man on the CMU sideline. A state-of-the-art commercial facial recognition system that determines the similarity between two images on a scale of 0 to 1 produced a similarity score of 0.6. Jain: "The reason why it's 0.6 is because there's a disguise. If I take an identical photo, it would be 1.” (link)

More on Underdog & Co’s acquisition of Altius Sports Partners as Underdog co-founder & managing partner Chris Mannix comments: “Ultimately [it’s about] how can we add value and try and be disruptive in the industry, obviously in the NIL space, but also as an integrated company. [...] Casey’s team has this really fast-growing group and we want to add rocket fuel, not mess up something. The last thing we want to do is mess with a great formula. We’re going to say, ‘How can we help?’ [...] When you think about ways we can add value, you’d certainly look at different customized events and content, whether that’s traditional streaming of social channels. You’re seeing a lot of disruptive young companies doing some really interesting things like that. That’s where we can lean in.” More from SBJ’s Terry Lefton & Michael Smith, including Altius CEO & Founder Casey Altius staying on through 2027 & remaining a shareholder. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken wonders how much longer March Madness can “remain unblemished by the legal and financial cross-currents that are roiling all of college sports,” adding: “If you’ve been paying attention, the signs of trouble are everywhere.” For instance, Wolken observes that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is “increasingly shooting verbal arrows at NCAA governance and committees that he believes are overweight with small school influence, constricting his league’s ability to evolve. This, too, seems like a pretext for the SEC to either run roughshod over the rest of Division I or break away.” Wolken also cites the potential Big East/Big 12/Big Ten postseason tournament on Fox as the type of event that “rarely works in the NCAA’s favor: A tournament run by three conferences in cooperation with their media partner while cutting the middle man − in this case, the NCAA − right out of the loop. What does that sound like? It’s basically the template for the College Football Playoff.” More from Wolken. (link)

80% of Power 5 schools now sell alcohol in the public areas of their stadiums on game days, according to an AP survey. Of the schools that don’t, some sell alcoholic drinks in nonpublic areas of the venue such as suites. Wisconsin is one of the schools that does not sell alcohol at football games, but the Badgers will begin selling it at basketball and hockey games this season. Deputy AD Mitchell Pinta: "If our fan experience metrics increase, then it certainly warrants a conversation. ‘Hey, we did this at Kohl Center [and] LaBahn Arena. What would it take? What will it look like? Is that something we want to do at Camp Randall?'" (link)

Now less than a month out from the opening of the football transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos observes there are fewer people “hitting the panic button” than last year, and one collective leader believes the amount of money available is likely to be smaller than last season. “Obviously some players will go in to chase a bag of cash, but the leading factor for an athlete’s decision to leave is to play immediately.” The shortened window should also mitigate the congestion, as one SEC collective operator points out: “I don’t think it’s going to be chaos. But that top 10%, depending on the quality of talent, will still be able to drive the market.” Meanwhile, a Big Ten personnel director posits the number of players looking to transfer could “dip a little bit based on the sheer amount of portal entries we had last year. I haven’t been hearing it’s going to be quiet or busy.” (link)

Former Ole Miss/LSU Football HC Ed Orgeron has partnered with activewear firm Rhoback in an exclusive deal that includes a marketing campaign in which Orgeron appears as the company’s interim CEO. The video has already garnered over 1.5M impressions on X (formerly Twitter) and has been viewed 1.6M times on Instagram. Rhoback brand manager Will Lawler praises Coach O’s enthusiasm, saying: “The second we ended one scene and we were good it was on to the next — no wasted time. You can envision how he ran his practices and his locker room. It was high energy the entire time, fully engaged, and he made an effort to go around and connect with everyone in the office.” Rhoback has also secured NIL deals with Alabama QB Jalen Milroe, Ohio State QB Kyle McCord, Notre Dame RB Audric Estime and several others, and Lawler says of the company’s NIL strategy: “We’re able to form relationships with some of the best athletes in the country prior to them turning pro; we’re able to associate ourselves with some of the most loyal fan bases in the country; and we’re able to create awesome content as a result.” (link)

Northern Iowa has been awarded $1M by the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors to support renovations to the UNI-Dome. Panthers AD David Harris: "We have said from the beginning that the UNI-Dome is a multi-purpose facility that brings visitors to the Cedar Valley. The Board was able to recognize how an investment in this project is an investment in the continued vitality of our region. Their support will help make this vision a reality." (link)

The NBA and Diamond Sports have agreed to a one-year deal that “essentially guarantees that the Bally Sports RSNs will continue to carry NBA games through the end of this season,” SBJ’s John Ourand reports, adding that the NHL is expected to cut a similar deal in the weeks to come. “The NBA likes this deal because it gives the league more flexibility as Diamond tries to navigate its way through bankruptcy. Regardless of the current length of some of the NBA teams’ Bally Sports deals, all are set to end after this season. A statement from Diamond reads, in part: “Upon Court approval, these agreements will enable Diamond to continue delivering live game broadcasts to fans throughout the 2023-24 NBA, NHL and MLB seasons. Diamond has been broadcasting NBA and NHL games and will continue to do so while the Court considers our motions, and while discussions with the NHL finalize with respect to their own new deal.” (link)
