Tulane AD Dannen joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Fischer at the NCAA Convention to discuss the Green Wave’s thrilling journey to the Cotton Bowl, how to leverage the momentum of the FB season, College Football Playoff expansion and more. Dannen says there are several ways in which the department will try to capitalize on the current success. “We have some facility aims. We’ve had some plans, and they’ve ramped up as we get more and more people engaged, and I have a meeting next week where I’m going to ask a lot of people for a lot of money and get those things done. Our collective went from $100K at the start of the year to $250K at the end of the year to over $1M now. So, we’re trying to promote into that space as well directly to benefit the student-athletes.” Dannen also offers a delicate assessment of the current state of NIL, telling Fischer: “Whenever I talk NIL, the first thing is everybody’s lying, and I remind everybody everybody’s lying. The numbers that you hear are lies. People are leveraging, agents are leveraging coaches, agents are leveraging collectives, so the numbers aren’t real. … I think we’ll start to see some failure to live up to promises in collectives. You’re starting to hear anecdotally some of that right now. I’m a believer that we don't want to overreact because we don’t like what we’re seeing.” Lots more on Connect. (link)

Utah is now the lone Under Armour school in the Pac-12, and Utes AD Harlan tells The Salt Lake Tribune he sees that as a positive. “Various reasons have now allowed us to be sort of the signature carrier of partnership in the West with them moving on from Cal and UCLA. We’re very, very appreciative of them. There’s a lot of things they do for us.” The deal runs through June 2027 and calls for Utah to receive $1.01M per year along with a $4.93M annual apparel allowance which increases to $5.84M in 2027, and Harlan adds: “I don’t think we’ve outgrown the deal. We’re constantly innovating with them. They’ve been involved in our NIL programming, which we’re very grateful for, did a commercial with our baseball team, soccer team. They’re a multibillion-dollar company, and you don’t really outgrow a multibillion dollar company.” (link)

Oklahoma State AD Weiberg provided an update to OSU faculty on the state of the athletic department, noting the Cowboys owe $2.425M in debt service this year, the lowest amount in the Big 12. The debt service will go up with renovations this year, but Weiberg said OSU will still have the league’s lowest debt service. Asked about what steps OSU is taking to protect players from brain injuries, Weiberg explained: “We’re watching the latest technologies and all of our players wear helmets that perfectly fit their head, made just for them. It’s expensive but it’s an investment.” (link)

Dayton MBB student-athletes were criticized by gamblers following the team’s loss to VCU, Flyers AD Sullivan confirms. UD HC Grant alluded to the fact during his postgame press conference following the Flyers’ victory over Davidson, saying: “There’s some laws that have recently been enacted, that to me, it could really change the landscape of what college sports is all about. And when we have people that make it about themselves and attack kids because of their own agenda, it sickens me. They have families. They don’t deserve that. Mental health is real. … I’m just asking all the Flyer fans just to understand that we’re dealing with 18-, 21-, 22-year-olds, and this is about them.” (link); Further, the Ohio Casino Control Commission Executive Director Schuler says the commission may look into state bettors making violent comments to student-athletes over gambling losses on social media and put them on a sports betting exclusion list, per XL Media’s Linnehan, who also reports the following from Sullivan: “The University of Dayton appreciates the commission's attention to this issue. Anything that protects the best interests of student-athletes across the state is something worth exploring.” (link)

“In a just world, the ADs would have made the 2023 football season feel like Squid Game for the defectors,” JohnCanzano.com’s webmaster writes about the Pac-12 schedule, noting that the league instead “took the high road” by not punishing USC and UCLA. Canzano appears to take some solace, however, in the idea that “the Trojans and Bruins won’t be given a wide berth in the Big Ten. They won’t be treated like royalty. They’ll get no breaks. They’ll enjoy no perks. I covered the Big Ten as a beat reporter in the 1990s. USC and UCLA may come from sunny Southern California, but in the Midwest the sun always shines brightest on Ohio State and Michigan. UCLA is Indiana. USC is Penn State. That’s the new reality for the soon-to-be departed. The Buckeyes and Wolverines cast a cold shadow.” (link)

Canzano also reports the Pac-12 schedule wasn’t unanimous among ADs. “There were three final drafts presented to the members, I’m told. The process gave each school a chance to vote for their preferred version. Five points were awarded to each institution’s No. 1 pick, three points for the No. 2 pick, and one point for No. 3 choice. The ‘A’ draft won. It received a first-place vote from eight of the 12 conference athletic directors. The ‘B’ and ‘C’ drafts each received two first-place votes.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Wilner assesses the Pac-12’s media rights strategy after Commissioner Kliavkoff remarked last month that there’s “no need for a rush” and concludes the conference needs a deal in place by March. “If the process bleeds into the spring, anxiety on the 10 remaining campuses will soar. Presidents and athletic directors will seek escape hatches. Options that once seemed untenable will grow more attractive.” One source adds: “The Pac-12 cannot get overconfident. If we know anything about college sports, it’s that you can’t assume the status quo will last.” Wilner acknowledges that as of now the “remaining Pac-12 schools either have nowhere to go, no reason to leave, or both,” making Kliavkoff’s position understandable. “But you know when the realignment knife strikes? USC is naming the field at Katherine B. Loker Track Stadium in honor of alumna and 11-time Olympic medalist Felix. President Folt: “When Allyson and I spoke about naming the field after her, she responded with the grace and humility she has shown throughout her life. The Allyson Felix Field will recognize her immense achievements as a sports legend and Trojan — while also showing our admiration for her role as an entrepreneur, advocate and champion for women. … My hope is that students playing on the Allyson Felix Field — or just walking by — will see her name prominently displayed and be curious to learn more about her talent, grit and generosity.” (link)

+ Oklahoma and LEARFIELD on Tuesday launched the first episode of Championship Mindset, an original-content series focusing on OU softball. + Texas A&M has also banned TikTok from its campus Wi-Fi, joining Texas, which announced it would do the same earlier this week after Governor Abbott directed state agencies to ban the app on government-issued devices.
