Sports Illustrated’s Forde notes Virginia’s men’s tennis national championship - its second straight - gives the ACC two spring sports national championships. ESPN’s Thamel goes inside baseball on challenges new Big Ten Commissioner Petitti is facing as he prioritizes "the official completion of the massive television contract worth more than $7 billion negotiated by his predecessor, Kevin Warren.” While the short form agreements were executed prior to Warren exiting, there appear to be some challenges on who knew what and when. Michigan AD Manuel: "We had not discussed, and I had not discussed with anyone in the league to change the tolerances [schedules] we had agreed upon years ago.” Per an industry source: "The fault here is with the administrators on campus. [...] How did the athletic directors not know this? The universities all signed off on the deal.” Michigan State Men’s Basketball HC Izzo: "One thing about coaches, you're almost asking the wrong people because we're the last to know anything.” Clearly Petitti has the media, scheduling and collaborative expertise to bring all groups together. NBC adds: "We're excited to start our Big Ten deal this fall. We had a great relationship with Kevin Warren, and same with Tony Petitti. We're confident that any and all outstanding issues are well on their way to being resolved.” More on moving parts between the Big Ten, Big Ten Network, NBC & Fox. (link)

Puck’s Belloni is joined by IMG Media EVP Mandel and Endeavor EVP for Content Strategy & Development/WME Sports Co-Head Brodkin to discuss the Big Ten and Big 12 media rights deals and their balance between linear and DTC. Brodkin first points out that the company was involved with both deals but to varying degrees. “The Big 12 decided to negotiate early with their incumbent, they could not take their rights to market early, so it was different than the Big Ten, who had the ability to go to market. In the deal with ESPN and the Big 12, there is a very big digital component (exclusive games on ESPN+).” Mandel adds of the Big Ten: “They did as close to an NFL deal as you could do. I mean, they really doubled down on classic broadcast television. To have a primetime package on NBC, their window in the afternoon on CBS and they continue with their great windows on Fox. That was the goal, and that was the result.” (link)

Illinois AD Whitman Q&As with The News-Gazette’s D’Alessio on a wide range of topics, including his philosophy on meetings, about which Whitman says: “I think the utility of meetings varies dramatically based on the organization. I still prefer the office drop-in for an unscheduled conversation — in my opinion, losing that opportunity was one of the biggest COVID workplace casualties. For us at DIA, I think productive, efficient meetings are a critical component of our day-to-day operations. We try to make sure we have the right people in the room, follow the right agenda, and ask the right questions to tease out the best ideas. Sometimes, that can take 30 minutes. Sometimes, that can take three hours.” Whitman goes on to remark that the hardest thing about being a leader is that it can be a “lonely journey,” and it is “unrealistic — and, in some ways, unfair — for you to expect anyone else to fully understand the weight of that burden or to share in bearing that responsibility.” More from Whitman, including what time he wakes up each morning. “Usually no later than 4:30 a.m. during the week — and often on the weekends. Those first two hours of the day are often the only time where I have complete control over my schedule.” (link)

The San Jose Mercury News’ Wilner and JohnCanzano.com’s namesake react to Arizona State AD Anderson mentioning San Diego State and SMU as potential expansion targets, with Wilner voicing his disapproval of an AD naming them publicly. “I just don’t think any AD in any conference should be talking about raiding specific schools from other conferences. I didn’t think it was right for Big 12 ADs to talk about raiding the Pac-12. And I just don’t think any Pac-12 ADs should be talking about San Diego State, SMU or whoever publicly.” Canzano agrees: “The Pac-12 knows better than anybody that it got picked over by the Big Ten, and it wasn’t happy about it, and there are bad feelings that come with that. So, I think all of the noise coming out of the Big 12, some people saying, ‘They’re going to take the Four Corners schools or the ‘Big Ten’s not done, it’s going to take Oregon and Washington.’ It’s irked the Pac-12 members, so I was a little surprised that a Pac-12 member mentioned San Diego State and SMU by name.” More from the Johns. Hampton’s Brooks profiles Campus Ink Founder Farag and his path in growing the business. Farag explains that “after a cold email to Mark Cuban in 2022 turned into an investment, the trajectory of our business took a significant turn. To date Campus Ink has signed 35+ power five schools to our new platform, helping 2500+ athletes make money. Our design and sales program has trained more than a thousand students spanning 100 campuses, and almost a third of our full-time employees began their journey with Campus Ink during undergrad. … Campus Ink is on pace to do $13M in sales this year.” Farag says the company so far has paid student-athletes over $500K and does not participate in any paid advertising. “Instead what we focus on is building organic communities around the athletes. Each school platform has its own instance of Shopify, Klaviyo, Instagram & Facebook. People think this is a little crazy, but we hire students on each campus to help run our accounts. We build laser-focused customer lists of rabid fans and help market on behalf of the athlete. If an athlete hits a buzzer-beater, there is a shirt available the next day.” Lots more. (link)

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly says that the league expects the Arizona Coyotes to play the 2023-24 season at Arizona State’s Mullett Arena after voters in Tempe rejected the franchise’s plan to build a new arena. Speculation has grown this week that the franchise could relocate to Houston, Salt Lake City, Kansas City or Quebec City as early as next season. (link)

A recent study from the Economic Policy Institute indicates this year’s class of college graduates is entering a stronger labor market for young workers, as measured by lower unemployment and underemployment rates, than the year prior's graduating class. The youth unemployment rate for young people aged 16-24, hit 7.5% in March, a 70-year low, according to the study. The figure also reflects a downtick in the overall U.S. unemployment rate, which fell to 3.5% during the same period. (link)

Nebraska President Carter talks to the Omaha World-Herald’s Shatel about potential further Big Ten expansion & the overall Power 5 landscape: “For our league to have national exposure in four time zones is fantastic. How big should it be? I don’t have the answer to that. Do we need four more Pac-12 teams that want to join? Time is going to tell. [...] I think the ACC has some work to do. Make sure they understand what their media rights are, what the penalties are. You’re talking $110 million to walk out the door. That’s a big price tag. I think we have another year or two of the status quo, with a few minor changes. But I think over the next year there’s going to be a lot of big changes that are going to happen.” (link)

The LA Times’ Plaschke questions USC President Folt’s interpretation of the word “integrity,” which she used to describe then-incoming Trojans AD Bohn in 2019. Fast forward to 2023 and Plaschke points to a number of articles his publication was working on about Bohn, including one that “recounted concerns about his conduct in his previous job at Cincinnati, citing six sources both named and anonymous who said he made unwanted physical contact with women while creating a toxic and hostile work environment.” More from Plaschke: “When asked Saturday whether Bohn was properly scrutinized before he was hired, a source close to Bohn’s search maintained that the university conducted a thorough vetting process. This all comes back to Folt. This is her account. This is her responsibility. This is her mess and right now, she must swim in it.” (link)

Staying in the Pac-12, the San Jose Mercury News’ Wilner writes on the $50M haul former Commissioner Scott took home from the league over the course of his 13-year tenure. Wilner points the finger: “...let’s not blame Scott for the egregious sum collected over the course of 13 years. Nope. Nobody would turn down that cash if offered. He’s no fool. Instead, fault lies entirely with his bosses, the university presidents. They negotiated his contract, installed him as chief executive of a media company, signed him to multiple extensions, allowed the Pac-12 Networks to operate without the proper checks and balances, then handed him that glorious severance package. [...] The presidents have botched this in every meaningful way over the years, from Scott’s compensation to the basketball games in China to the Pac-12 Networks strategy on down the list. And always, the athletic departments are left paying the price and bearing the burden.” More. (link)

LSU President Tate in a retweet of news that former Iowa women’s basketball student-athlete Czinano had been waived despite being the 26th pick in last month’s WNBA Draft, wrote: “Remained quiet when my students were released. No claim of sour grapes here…but the WNBA business model is suboptimal. Players are better served in college or with other transparent options to aspire. I hope this market learns to tap into the passion of college WBB.” Recent LSU players Williams and Morris were also recently released after going in the second round of the draft. (link)

Louisville Baseball HC McDonnell after missing out on the postseason, a rarity for McDonnell’s tenure in the Derby City: “I always expect to be here. But I'm not going to shy away from (his recent concerns about facilities). I've been very vocal. Right? The past few years. … I'm not going to get into it now but I've been very vocal and challenging over the last 12 months. Just look at the writing on the wall. Look at where this program has been and you walk around. You walk through the dugouts. You walk under the stadium. You see what differently have we done since 2000-whatever. So, it's, you know, we want to be here. We love it here. But, again, I want to work for people and be with people and in a group that want to win as well. And don't tell me you want to win. Show me you want to win. That's all I asked for, and I think our fans asked for that. I think our players asked for that. I've been recruiting these kids. They've been committed since their eighth-, ninth-, 10th-grade year. Well, they showed up on campus they haven't seen a whole lot different. They said it was going be different. We promised them it would be different, but it's not different." (link)

Wisconsin Women’s Rowing HC Bryans, who resigned this week after 19 years leading the Badgers, explains: “I’m proud of what I’ve done. And I’m proud of what the team has been able to accomplish and build. The staff has been remarkable, everybody that I’ve been able to work with. And it’s time for new leadership. … I’m at peace with what we did this year, even though it wasn’t as fast as we’d hoped to go. The team was unified and they did a great job. So this was just the right time. … It’s been a lot of years of doing one thing. I always say that for the freshmen, it’s the hardest thing they have to do, be a freshman in college. Because it’s the biggest change in their whole lives. And so maybe I’m going to test that theory. We’ll see.” (link)

With Michigan Football’s Assistant Director of Recruiting Schembechler - son of legendary Wolverines HC of the same name - resigning a few days after he was hired due to some prior controversial social media posts and interactions, the Wolverines have released a statement: “Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned his position with Michigan Football. We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome and where fully support the University's and Athletic Department's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.” (link)

Former Duke AD & current Huron Consulting leader White told Toledo athletics officials at a retreat last week they all need to “become good storytellers” as he believes the past year’s athletics successes for the Rockets have been underreported. The Toledo Blade’s Briggs argues leveraging athletics success could be one key strategy to fight the school’s enrollment decline, which is down 32% since 2010. Briggs: “Truth remains, the best way to promote your school, engage alumni, and elevate campus spirit is through that most quintessential of university ideals: beating the hell out of another institution’s football team. And that translates to student recruitment and retention.” Rockets AD Blair: “I call it Midwest humility. I don't want to be terribly braggadocios, but I also want to tell the story of all the great things going on at this university. We've got tremendous coaches, tremendous young people, a tremendous campus. We’ve got to start telling about ourselves.” (link)

Las Vegas continues to grow as a sports epicenter, potentially making it harder for UNLV to cut through the clutter. Rebels Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Fan Engagement Canal: “UNLV is an incredibly unique school, not only in this market, but I would say in this industry. There’s nothing else like UNLV. You can’t take a conventional approach to marketing our programs. You have to be creative. You have to be innovative. You have to do different things while also not ignoring the simple things that do work.” Canal also believes there's room for fandom to support all teams in the city: “They’re doing their thing (pro sports), and we’re doing ours. They’re completely different products, although we’re all in the same kind of sports market. We just offer something different, and that’s what makes it special.” More. (link)

What can the sports industry learn about leveraging primary & secondary ticket markets for the high-profile Taylor Swift tour? The face value of non-VIP tickets ranged from $49 to $499 (plus fees), but resale prices ranged from $1,000 to $8,000 (plus fees). Axios’ Primack: “Swift herself could have limited the price gouging, but didn’t.” During the sale process last fall, Swift used Ticketmaster’s “Verified Fan” tool to reduce the number of tickets purchased by brokers, but she did not opt to use Ticketmaster’s “Face Value Ticket Exchange” (FVTE) option, which would have prevented brokers and others from reselling tickets for more than face value. One issue, however, with FVTE, is that six states outlaw its use. More from Primack. (link)
