More from Washington State President Schulz’s conversation with WSU regent Cerna, as the two discuss the divergent schools of thought among faculty and staff on the role of athletics in higher education. The first group includes “enthusiastic fans.” The second group believes higher education has no business in athletics at all, and a third group falls somewhere in the middle. The third group, which Schulz characterizes as the largest, might attend a few games and are generally okay with athletics as long as it doesn’t “get too excessive one way or the other in terms of finances and money and resources.” But Schulz worries that with NIL, “all of the sudden I’ve got a player sitting in my class that makes ten times my salary and they’re 18, that middle group starts shifting to the” second group. “If this continues the way it is now over the next three or four years, I think we lose that group in the middle that probably at that point says, ‘Kirk, it may be time for us to think about doing something else.’” Even the first group, the enthusiastic group, could begin getting uncomfortable, as Schulz notes they may say: “Well, when I got to shake their hand at graduation and wish them well, that was okay, and now all the sudden I’m not even sure if we’re just gonna pay them to be here a couple years.” Full discussion. U.S. Integrity President Holt tells The Athletic’s Vannini that in light of the alleged gambling impropriety that occurred involving former Alabama Baseball HC Bohannon, a “big misnomer is that these match-fixing or game-manipulation or misuse of insider information schemes are big multi-million dollar schemes. That’s the biggest misnomer of all. Oftentimes, these are a couple thousand dollars with student-athletes who are in a vulnerable position at the time. It’s almost never some multimillion-dollar scheme. It’s almost insignificant money, like $1,500, $1,200 to manipulate certain portions of matches of the activity or to provide certain information not available to the public.” Meanwhile, Holt says the company on Friday launched the Prohibet tool, which allows a league or team to submit a list of players, coaches and staff into an encrypted database. If any of those names attempt a bet with a domestic sportsbook that uses U.S. Integrity, it’ll instantly be flagged. Holt also remarks that “a lot of people are saying [the Alabama situation] is a cautionary tale, but I say no; this is a perfect example of why regulated sports betting works.” More from Vannini. Five Oklahoma women’s programs set at least one attendance record this year, per The Oklahoman’s Carlson, with gymnastics & softball topping all-time average season marks & volleyball, soccer & tennis doing so on a single-game basis. Sooners Executive Assoc. AD for External Engagement Beasley lauds her team: “We’re not just ticketing. We’re not just marketing. We’re not just communications. We’re not just creative. We’re not just sponsorships. We’re all external. We’re all one team. [...] We want to capture the fear of missing out. So we are posting things on social. Not big clips. We’re pushing small clips or ‘Had to be here’ or ‘Look at this moment.’ We are fighting every day to keep people in our venues instead of watching at home.” (link)

+ In addition to approving a $70M initial spend on renovation designs to Beaver Stadium, the Penn State Board of Trustees approved more than $90M to build a permanent home for its soccer programs ($21.25M), develop a training table for all athletes ($31.9M) and add indoor practice space ($9.8M). More than $20M will go to the next phase of renovations to the Lasch Football Building. (link)

+ Kansas State is finalizing a new deal for Football HC Klieman worth $44M over the next eight seasons, ESPN’s Thamel reports. Under the new contract, Klieman would make an average of $5.5M (up about $1.5M per year from his current deal) per year over the course of the deal through the 2030 season. (link)
+ The Athletic’s Olson and Feldman catch up with a dozen Power 5 Football HCs and recruiting staffers to discuss the impact of Colorado’s roster overhaul, the risks associated with it and what it will take for it to succeed. One Pac-12 director of player personnel: “My concern is the rapid hemorrhaging of personnel within specific position rooms. They have an unfathomably low amount of scholarship players in some rooms that demand high-volume personnel. I’d be less worried about culture and locker room dynamics right now in Year 1 than I would be about having enough players to line up and stay healthy.” One Big 12 staffer: “It is just absolutely unreasonable to think you can sign 25 players out of the spring transfer portal and make your team better unless the players they had were just that bad, which I don’t buy. In the end, is the sum of the 25 new guys going to be greater than the sum of the 25 old guys? Man, I don’t know.” (link)

Fordham Senior Executive Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Welfare & Competitive Excellence/SWA Thompson and Missouri Senior Assoc. AD of Student-Athlete Development & Championship Performance/SWA Blunt sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz to reflect on their student-athlete experiences and discuss issues of gender and sport equity, NIL, the increasing use of technology and data in college athletics and how the industry can best incorporate the student-athlete voice into the governance process. Thompson explains that RealResponse is a way to effectively gauge student-athlete mental wellbeing while also emphasizing the importance of actively engaging with them. Blunt says Missouri relies on subject matter experts to stay up to date on the increasingly important use of technology and data in the industry and also points out the need to keep student-athletes in the loop. “Do they understand what they’re using, when it’s allowed to be tracked for performance purposes and then making sure, especially in the space of NIL, they understand what the data is being used for and who’s controlling the data.” Full Q&A. Uplift Labs Director of Sales Russo pens a guest column for SBJ examining how technology developed for Major League Baseball teams will impact the game at all levels, noting that “college baseball programs and other amateurs in the sport now have the ability to start gathering and sharing information that is similar to what can be found in the major leagues. … For the right players, these technologies can be a revelation. With the affordability and accessibility phases now complete, it’s up to the athletes to open their minds and acknowledge the enabling power of tech.” Most college players, Russo continues, won’t advance to MLB, but “accessible MLB-grade technology can empower open-minded, industrious amateurs to realize their highest potential — which should be the goal of any player or coach. We're very much in the early innings of biomechanics, both professionally and now in college, but the users who demonstrate a willingness to embrace its potential will ultimately have a leg up.” (link)

Fubo during Q1 lost a net of 160K North American subscribers compared to its total at the end of Q4 of 2022, per The TV Answer Man, who notes that “by comparison, it lost only 74K net subs in the first quarter of 2022 compared to its sub total at the end of 2021. You might say that the NBA and NHL playoffs weren’t a factor in the first quarter, but March Madness was. The Turner channels broadcast the majority of college basketball’s annual men’s tournament, but they were not on Fubo. It’s hard to market yourself as a sports-first service and then not carry a large part of one of the most important sporting events of the year. No wonder Fubo’s subs declined in March and throughout the first quarter.” (link)

The San Jose Mercury News’ Wilner surfaces a conversation between Washington State President Schulz & university regent Cerna from last week that includes context on why the Pac-12 media rights deals may be taking longer than expected. Schulz: “...the uncertainty in the economy, the layoffs in the tech sector and other places. I know at least one of the partners we were talking to said, ‘We’re ready to sign today, but the optics of us announcing that we’re laying off X number of people and we signed a multimillion-dollar deal with the Pac-12 are just not the best, so we’re going to have to wait six weeks.’ Clearly, the optics are something those folks are really worried about.” Further from Schulz: “If you said when would be the worst time in the last six years to try and negotiate a media deal, probably the last five months is pretty close to the worst.” Schulz says he expects the new agreements to be announced this summer. The Las Cruces Sun News Groves dives deeper into push back by some New Mexico State constituents on the recent contract extension & compensation increase for Aggies AD Moccia amid some tension around his department. Of note from Groves: “In 2020, Moccia notified (former University Chancellor) Arvizu and former University President John Floros that a Chicago-based search firm contacted him to gauge interest in AD openings at DePaul and Central Michigan. Moccia's contract included a clause that required written notice to leadership when he is contacted by other institutions for potential jobs. [...] In December of 2021, Moccia had a Zoom interview regarding the UNLV AD position, and in November of 2021, Moccia notified leadership of interest in the Florida International AD position.” (link)

Creighton AD Blossom reviews the men’s basketball season, which included a high-profile run to the Elite Eight, as well as some notable postseason roster movement: “Our season also isn’t measured just on the NCAA tournament. We want to be the best team in the Big East. The best program. Not 22, or 19 or whatever. I think this year we made strides toward that ultimate goal of being looked at as the best basketball program in the Big East. Would I take the Elite Eight over the Big East championship? Yeah, I’m taking that. [...] What you hope everyone does, and I’m still trying to figure this out, ‘How can we make this the best experience and environment possible for our student athletes to where they couldn’t fathom leaving?’” (link)

Today’s transition-to-Division I deep dive highlights the move St. Thomas is making from the DIII ranks. Twin Cities Business reporter Borzi: “According to EADA data, UST spent about $17 million on athletics in 2021–22, its first year in D1, more than three times what it spent annually in its final years in D3 (roughly $5 million a year). UST Athletics earned $11.8 million during the same period, not counting support from the institution and donors, which filled the gap, and [Athletic Director] Esten says he is encouraged that the deficit was 5% smaller than he had planned for. UST expects to fund athletics this way over the next four years as it adds more scholarships and expenses increase. At the same time, it hopes to keep the gap manageable by generating more revenue from ticket sales, multimedia rights/sponsorships, and philanthropy. By 2026, when UST completes its D1 transition, Esten estimates UST’s budget will fall between $21 million and $24 million—in the middle of Summit League institutions.” UST VP of Business Affairs/CFO Vangsgard: “In part, we’re building a long-term strategy for the institution. The success or failure of our D1 move will be measured 15 years from now, and we will have the benefit of hindsight.” Lots more. (link)

The St. Francis (NY) Men’s Tennis team got off to a 1-10 start this season, but finished with the program’s first, and last, appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers will shut down the entire athletic department at the end of this academic year and HC Davis, who played at SFC and has led the squad for 19 years, notes: “Being an alum of the college, being there for so long and seeing the program grow year after year and battle after battle, it’s definitely a bitter pill to swallow.” (link)

Rhode Island’s new Soloviev Family Basketball Practice Facility is nearly complete and should be ready for the men’s and women’s teams by August. AD Bjorn: “It's 100% donor funded renovated space, it's the former West Gym. We raised just about $8 million privately to be able to put together this reservation. But it's what our men's and women's basketball programs need. The student athletes need the 24-hour access to come in and shoot, work out and this will allow them to do that." Video highlights included. (link)

Western Kentucky Football HC Helton signed a one-year contract extension which could keep him with the Hilltoppers through 2028. His $900K salary will not change. Included in the contract addendum is a provision automatically extending Helton an additional year “following each season the football program wins seven or more games.” If the university terminates Helton’s contract without cause before Dec. 31, 2023, it owes him $4M, while Helton would owe $1.1M if he terminates the deal without cause. The WKU Board also approved Men’s Basketball HC Lutz’s contract, which keeps him at the helm through June 30, 2027 at a $650K/year salary. Additionally, he is entitled to 50% of all gross ticket revenues that exceed $900K. Lots of other bonuses possible. $2M owed in either direction for termination prior to April 30, 2024. (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker talks with Louisville Assoc. Director for Academic Services Ifill about the international student-athlete experience, having been one herself, what she took away from the recent NCAA Inclusion Forum, opportunities for student-athletes to study abroad, the complexities associated with preparing international student-athletes for life after college and lots more. Ifill says meeting individuals from different backgrounds and hearing their stories was a particularly valuable part of the Inclusion Forum. “There are many aspects of what the Inclusion Forum tapped into and can better everyone’s understanding – just being more mindful of the people around you. You never know who you're sitting next to, you never know who you’re going to meet. … It was good to be in those rooms to hear other stories, to hear the action plans that other universities are taking for better diversity efforts.” Full conversation on Connect. A statement from Arizona on Football starting quarterback de Laura: “In the fall of 2022 after a civil complaint was filed against football student-athlete Jayden de Laura, the University of Arizona first became aware of a 2018 incident involving de Laura which occurred while he was in high school in Hawaii. After reviewing the matter, the determination was made to allow de Laura to continue as a student-athlete and his status remains unchanged.” The Arizona Daily Star’s Spears: “The University of Wisconsin released a similar statement Thursday regarding de Laura’s high school teammate, safety Kamo’i Latu, who also was named in the civil lawsuit. UW said it was unaware of ‘the matter being reported involving Latu’ when he enrolled at the school in 2022, became aware in the fall and that Latu remains a member of the Badgers football team.” (link)

Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting was held yesterday in Omaha & here are some goodies from Warren Buffet & Charlie Munger: “You should write your obituary and then try to figure out how to live up to it. [...] In the 58 years we’ve been running Berkshire, I would say there’s been a great increase in the number of people doing dumb things, and they do big dumb things. [...] The Federal Reserve balance sheet has gone from $800 billion to $2.2 trillion and most of that’s in $100 bills overwhelmingly. … I would really like to know where all of that is. Anyone who thinks cash is trash ought to look at the Federal Reserve balance sheet. It is just astounding the way $100 bills have spread. … Believe me, cash is not trash.” Lots, lots more. (link)
