Sports TV Ratings cites a source who indicates Monday night’s San Diego State-UConn Men’s Basketball championship viewership was 14.963M. “Still > than any of last year's NBA Finals games.” (link); SBJ’s Karp adds: “If [that viewership figure is correct], that's easily a record low for a men's NCAA Basketball Championship (CBS or Turner). Prior all-time low was 2018, Villanova-Michigan, TBS/TNT/truTV, 15.97M. CBS's prior low was 2004, UConn-Georgia Tech, 17.09M. (link)
|
The Athletic’s Deitsch adds additional context to the massive LSU-Iowa WBB title game ratings: “The previous ESPN era (1996-PRESENT) viewership record was 5.68M viewers for UConn's win over Oklahoma in 2002. [Sports Media Watch] believes the previous women's tournament record was 8.1M for a Virginia-Stanford semifinal on CBS in 1992. This beat both. Incredible. One thing to note heading forward: The upcoming Big Ten contract between Fox, CBS, NBC/Peacock/Big Ten Network means a lot of national television windows for Caitlin Clark next year. Fox Sports is well aware of this. Money talks. They'll push those games.” (link)
|
The Pac-12 is increasingly unlikely to strike a media rights deal in which 50% of its inventory is available via linear TV, according to LJC Media President/CEO Williams, who tells CBS’ Dodd: “I'm at an absolute loss how NBC, CBS, ESPN, ABC or Fox gets [the Pac-12] to 50%. … They could get there with ION or get there with CW. Personally, if I were talking to one of these presidents, I would have zero problem with CW. They've got legacy television stations all over the country." Williams goes on to submit that “I think where we are right now is Apple would take [a piece] and maybe play with Amazon to give them [Pac-12] a Friday night game. The trickier part is who, then, becomes the linear part? … If they want to prove me wrong, I'm happy. I've been proved wrong before. I'll be proved wrong in the future. … Both of those (ION and the CW) two are legit broadcasters.” (link)

LSU WBB student-athlete Reese and Iowa WBB student-athlete Clark experienced the biggest jumps in their social media followings after Sunday’s national championship game, per Sportico’s Caron, who notes Reese’s follower count nearly doubled from around 500K to 1.08M, while Clark’s went from just over 200K to 537K. LSU student-athlete Johnson added roughly 100K followers, bringing her total to 1.01M. Sportico’s Feldman adds some context: “Angel Reese gained more IG followers in six hours on Monday than any men’s Final Four player has gained in his entire life." (link, link)
|
More from Reese, though she’s not eligible for the WNBA Draft currently, says she’s not sure she would make the jump even if she were right now. “I’m not in a rush. I’m chilling right now. I am in no rush to go to the league. The money I’m making is more than some of the people that are in the league that might be top players.” On3’s McVeigh notes the WNBA’s highest-paid player is the Las Vegas Aces’ Young, who makes $250K per year, while the average player makes around $100K. (link)

While much has been made of LSU WBB HC Mulkey’s attire, the four-time national championship coach tells USA Today: “There are LSU women who are graduates, who are famous designers, and they send me jackets and say … 'Coach, quite honestly, I don't know anything about basketball, but I will come just to see what you wear.’ Well, you know what, I want those that come to the games for that reason to keep coming, and I want them to learn the game of basketball. Those that come because of basketball, forget what I wear on the sideline. Look at the product on the floor. Don’t make what I wear bigger than what’s on that floor and what I have done X’s and O’s-wise as a coach. But if me wearing their jackets and things like that helps them but it also sells one more ticket or puts one more set of eyeballs on our game, so be it.” (link)

Auburn FB HC Freeze wants to step up the competition for spring games by playing other teams. “I think everybody would get out of it exactly what they want. And let's adopt a charity to give all the proceeds to... Let Alabama play Troy and we play UAB or vice versa, I don't care. People will come see that.” Freeze goes on to submit that “you're decreasing your injury possibilities by 50%. Coaches are smart enough to control (the physicality) -- we're not going to hit each other's quarterbacks. I just think it would be great for the sport." (link)

+ Virginia Tech Softball AC Gillis is no longer part of the staff, despite still being listed “in multiple places on the Tech athletics website,” according to the Roanoke Times’ Berman. Hokies AD Babcock explains that “we felt it was best that he no longer be on the staff” but declined to go into specifics except to add the decision came after a “process.” Babcock also noted Gillis remains a Tech employee because his letter of appointment has not expired. Hokies HC D’Amour also declined to go into detail, saying only: “I’ll just let Whit speak for it.” (link)

Bowling Green has partnered with Blueprint Sports to launch the Ziggy Collective, which will support all BGSU student-athletes. Falcons AD van der Merwe: “I fully support a robust name, image, and likeness (NIL) ecosystem for the student-athletes of Bowling Green State University. This venture will provide unique business and sponsorship opportunities for our student-athletes. This university is fortunate to have a group of innovative and entrepreneurial supporters who are inspired by extending these opportunities.” (link)

A group led by private equity firm Sixth Street has closed on an NWSL expansion team in the San Francisco Bay Area, committing to a league-record $53M expansion fee, per Sportico’s Caron and Novy-Williams, who report investors include former Facebook COO Sandberg, former Golden State Warriors President Welts and former USWNT players Chastain, Wagner, Slaton and Osbourne. The group plans to invest $125M in the team at the start, including the expansion fee, a roughly $40M practice facility, and the remaining $32M or so onto the club’s balance sheet. Sixth Street co-Founder/CEO Waxman says the investing thesis is based on data pertaining to growing attendance in women’s sports, increased media visibility, social media following and contractually obligated revenue. + JPMorgan Chase CEO Dimon is optimistic about the economy but cautions that “threatening storm clouds are still here.” One such storm cloud is the banking crisis, which he says is not yet over, “and even when it is behind us, there will be repercussions from it for years to come." Dimon notes resilient consumer spending and a strong job market have buoyed the economy, adding that: “When no one talks about risk for too long, it begins to cloud your judgment. Looking ahead, the positives are huge.” (link)
+ Job openings fell by 632K to 9.9M in February, the lowest level since May 2021, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which also found that about 4M workers quit their jobs in February. That’s down from the peak of over 4.5M in November 2021, but about 400K higher than the pre-pandemic high watermark. (link)

+ OpenAI CEO Altman tells the Wall Street Journal’s Jin and Hagey his goal is to, in their words, “forge a new world order in which machines free people to pursue more creative work. In his vision, universal basic income—the concept of a cash stipend for everyone, no strings attached—helps compensate for jobs replaced by AI. Mr. Altman even thinks that humanity will love AI so much that an advanced chatbot could represent ‘an extension of your will.’” (link)

USA Today’s Wolken contends Connecticut’s Men’s Basketball national championship validates the school’s decision to embrace Big East hoops despite it coming at football’s expense. Huskies AD Benedict explains that while the AAC is a good league, it was a bad fit for UConn. “You have to be able to recruit. It’s a very competitive league, but in the northeast and particularly in New England and the Tri-State area, that league did not resonate. And we had to be successful recruiting against the Big East and the ACC, and we were in the AAC and it just wasn’t working. It doesn't mean it won’t work for other people, but it wasn’t working for us. … This validates more what we’ve been doing over the last five years to get to this point, and the Big East without question was a huge part of it.” (link)
|
ESPN’s Thamel observes UConn’s national title comes amid a confluence of events for the Big East that has the league surging toward the trappings of another era of prominence.” With three of the past seven MBB crowns, the addition of St. John’s HC Pitino and former Providence HC Cooley taking over at Georgetown, Thamel notes that “all this momentum comes at a compelling financial inflection point for the league.” Big East Commissioner Ackerman adds: “We hope this is a perfect storm for us. All of these factors are combining to put us in the best possible position. … I do think that we have the notion that this could help elevate the relative value of basketball to football and other sports. That's a real prospect for us. To test that worth." More. (link)

The Miami (FL)-Connecticut MBB semifinal matchup drew 12.85M viewers to CBS, down from last year’s Duke-North Carolina matchup, which brought 16.25M viewers to TNT/TBS. Meanwhile, the Florida Atlantic-San Diego State semifinal brought in 11.9M viewers, an increase from the 11.1M who watched Villanova take on Kansas last year, per Sports TV Ratings. (link); Overall, the MBB Final Four averaged 12.34M viewers on CBS, down 17% from last year on TBS, TNT and TruTV but up 2% from 2021, according to Sports Media Watch. (link)

Iowa WBB student-athlete Clark doesn’t believe LSU peer Reese should be criticized for taunting her at the end of the national championship game. “I’m just one that competes, and she competed. I think everybody knew there would be a little trash talk in the entire tournament. It’s not just me and Angel, so I don’t think she should be criticized. LSU deserves it. They played so well, and like I said, I’m a big fan of hers.” (link)

The NCAA’s Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball Summer Initiative Working Groups last week shared concepts for the Basketball Summer Initiative with the NABC and WBCA. Recommendations would permit up to two contests during the summer as part of a school's declared eight weeks of already-permissible summer athletic activities. Participation against a DI opponent in up to two exhibition contests, two scrimmages or one tournament-style event (not to exceed two contests in length) during a summer in which a basketball team is not engaged in a foreign tour would be allowed, and all matchups could be open to the public. Teams could participate in contests within the U.S. or its territories, but student-athletes would not be allowed to miss class. The groups are now seeking membership feedback and have targeted summer 2024 as a start date if the legislation is adopted. (link)

Legal Matters…
+ Attorneys of two former student-athletes today filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA and the Power 5 conferences seeking retroactive damages for thousands of former athletes based on Alston awards. Specifically, the suit wants to obtain a damages award covering all current and former athletes who competed on a Division I team on or after April 1, 2019 “who would have met the requirements for receiving an Academic Achievement Award under the criteria established by their schools for qualifying for such an Award.” While USA Today’s Berkowitz notes this will likely be used by the NCAA as an illustration of why it needs antitrust protection, plaintiff’s attorneys Kessler and Berman, both of whom have taken on the NCAA in high-profile legal battles, including the Alston case, are unconcerned. Kessler: “I've spoken to many members of Congress about this the last several years. I know Steve has, too. We have yet to find members of Congress who don't worry about the athletes as the victims of the exploitation. They're not really terribly concerned about the NCAA's claim that, somehow, it's the victim. So, I don't think there's any real desire in Congress to grant immunity to the NCAA any more than they would grant immunity to Amazon." (link)
+ The Committee on Infractions has scheduled a three-day hearing for former Tennessee HC Pruitt, former DC Ansley and other school officials on April 19-21 regarding the alleged recruiting violations that occurred during Pruitt’s tenure. Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger: “Despite months of negotiations, a resolution between the school and the NCAA, as well as the coaches and the NCAA, has not been reached. Reasons remain unclear, though potential penalties are believed to range from multiyear show causes for those involved to further probationary sanctions for the school. … Given the nature of the case, many expected the school to also reach a resolution with the NCAA. Even the governing body’s enforcement staff noted the school’s exemplary cooperation in the investigation.” (link)
+ UC Davis has acknowledged two Level II NCAA violations related to financial aid paperwork dating back to 2014. The University self-reported the violations to the NCAA and has accepted responsibility by abiding by all imposed sanctions. (link)

San Diego State AD Wicker tells The New York Times’ Witz that COVID actually helped the Aztecs in terms of building Snapdragon Stadium. Witz: “When loan rates plummeted, the school was able to borrow money for the $310M stadium at 2.78% interest, which [Wicker] said will save about $2M annually in interest payments. Also, the project’s contractor sourced building materials immediately, before supply chains were clogged. Wicker: “If we had waited six months, I don’t know if we would have built the stadium. It would have been that much more expensive.” (link)

For every pint sold, Western Collective, whose name only coincidentally includes the word “collective,” will donate 10 cents to The Horseshoe Collective. Horseshoe Collective Executive Director Nickell on the marketing benefits: “Being able to walk into the grocery store and see The Horseshoe Collective’s logo on a can and have people turn the can around and go ‘What is this?’ and it’s got our mission statement on it.” More from On3’s Wittry. The Oklahoma House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed Senate Bill 840, which “removes virtually all restrictions on who can represent athletes in NIL deal negotiations and allows universities to support NIL activities from third parties,” according to On3’s Crabtree. Most notably, according to Crabtree, is that the bill “appears to provide cover for [universities] “from being punished by the NCAA for any NIL-related violations, including any committed by collectives that have been set up to support student-athletes through deal facilitation.” More from Crabtree. Cincinnati announces a “transformative investment” from Dave and Wendy Herche to spearhead updates to the MBB and WBB locker rooms. Plans for honoring this gift include calling the men's and women's basketball practice gym "The Herche" and adding the wording "Herche Courtside" to the apron at center court of the Ed Jucker Court at Fifth Third Arena. The "Herche Courtside" will be a premium seating area that surrounds the playing surface. (link)

The new player development area features a full-length caged, fully air conditioned space that will provide both teams the ability to conduct a multitude of hitting and pitching drills and the ability to perform live pitching, hitting and fielding scenarios to imitate game situations.” The project is expected to be completed by the start of the 2023 fall semester.
