FIU has received a combined $2M gift from four donors who contributed $500K apiece, including FIU Board of Trustee member Duart and his wife, FIU Foundation Board of Directors member Vidal-Duart. The other three individuals wish to remain anonymous. The gift, which is the largest one-time contribution in the athletic department’s history, will support the construction of a new weight room facility at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center (OBCC), the renovation of the football locker room at R. Kirk Landon Fieldhouse, and the installation of new state-of-the-art hydrotherapy recovery rooms at both the OBCC and the Fieldhouse. (link)

Bethune-Cookman is set to break ground on a new indoor football practice facility thanks in part to a $1M gift from NBA Hall of Famer Barkley, which was announced late last year. Wildcats AD Theus: “It’s no secret that the football team was practicing at the city stadium. There were not locker rooms on campus and there was no facility to call their own. We spent an enormous amount of money bussing the players back and forth for practice and the storage was not conducive with what we needed for maximum sanitation and functionality. … The on-campus football facility will change the trajectory of our football program and it’s one of the things I was trying to do since I’ve been hired at this program. I wanted to move the needle. I wanted to give this opportunity to a program that really deserves to have its own.” (link)

Texas State has also landed a $1M gift from former Baseball student-athlete Sibley that will go toward a new $8M “indoor state-of-the-art player development complex.” The new space will feature locker rooms & lounges for both baseball & softball, three indoor batting cages, a pitching laboratory, indoor hospitality lounge & more. No details on a construction timeline. (link)

South Carolina WBB student-athlete Boston was the first pick in this year’s WNBA draft as she joins the Indiana Fever. Maryland’s Miller, Villanova’s Siegrist, Iowa State’s Soares and UConn’s Lopez Senechal comprised the top five. The Gamecocks saw three players go in the first round and two more in the second and third rounds, marking the most by any school this year. The SEC had nine players taken overall, the Big Ten had six, the Pac-12 had five and the Big 12 and ACC finished with three picks each. (link)

The WNBA is “sitting on a gold mine,” according to USA Today’s Armour, who points to incoming stars in South Carolina student-athlete Boston, Maryland’s Miller and Villanova’s Siegrist as well as next year’s potential class of Iowa star Clark and LSU’s Reese. Add to that equation the league’s established stars “and an Olympics next year, and the league is poised for the kind of transcendent moment the NBA had when Magic and Bird joined the league. Provided the WNBA doesn’t screw it up. The W can get in its own way like no other league.” As evidence, Armour cites a lack of urgency in expanding and league officials who “are just fine with some of its franchises pinching pennies on both staff and facilities.” Furthermore, Armour points out what others have in that college stars are opting to take their COVID year rather than declaring for the draft because it makes more sense from a financial and player treatment standpoint. “But [the WNBA] continues to act as if it’s a big player rather than the next big thing. Which it is. Or could be.” (link)

Count Colorado FB HC Sanders among those in favor of spring exhibition games, as Coach Prime explains: “I said it three years ago. That’s the smartest thing ever. You can’t play the schools that could possibly be on your schedule, but I think it’s a financial windfall for a lot of universities, you could go home in a way. It’s a tremendous opportunity.” Sanders also believes the games could limit exposure to injuries while also giving coaches more insights into strengths and weaknesses and suggests expanding into similar formats during the off season. “Sometimes you measure yourself based on what you have in camp, and sometimes that’s not good. … You’ve got to get out there and see, if Tarzan is really Tarzan or is he Jane? You want to see.” (link)

“The National Collegiate Athletic Association is urging an Indiana federal court to deny class certification to more than 1,600 Black athletes who accuse the organization of racially discriminating against students at historically Black colleges and universities, arguing the proposed plaintiffs are too diverse because they hail from different schools, conferences and teams with their own set of unique circumstances.” More behind the Law360 paywall. The Current’s Gerson examines the growth of cheerleading and its potential path to becoming sanctioned by the NCAA, pointing out that recognition as a sport by the IOC was an important first step in that process. Trinity Valley Community College Cheer co-HC Franklin, whose team was made famous on the Netflix documentary Cheer, believes being added as an Olympic sport could serve as a “final goal” for student-athletes, who have little in the way of professional cheerleading opportunities. North Florida HC Mills adds: “I really just think it all comes down to the money at the end of the day, because even schools where you see a cheer team with national championship after national championship, it would still be a 50-50 bet on whether or not that cheerleading program feels that they are fully supported by their university. I don’t think Olympic classification will change that.” (link)

Meanwhile, Wichita State Cheer HC Richmond tells The Sunflower’s Brown that a lack of funding impedes the team’s goal of competing nationally. “We are appreciated to a certain extent, but the appreciation does not necessarily show in our budget. Wichita State hired me knowing that my expectation is to go to nationals…but we don’t have any Wichita State funding to make that happen.” Student-athlete Degrado laments the fact that cheerleaders can’t study in the Student-Athlete Success Center and points out: “We were the only sport —and I will say sport— to show up at the ribbon cutting of the opening of that Student-Athlete Center and to shake the hands of the donors. That was us –in uniform. And I think that’s quite sad.” Degrado does say Shockers AD Saal was the first AD to visit them at practice and gave the team his personal phone number. “That made us feel loved, and that made us feel seen and cared for.” Still, she doesn’t expect things to change. “It’s not necessarily about the athletic director himself, but more so an institutional issue where the university’s eyes are just not in our direction.” (link)

McKinsey & Company conducted a survey of roughly 1,700 women working in the business of sports and found the industry “trails all other industries on every dimension of inclusion,” which is particularly important because “women reported being 2.8 times more likely to leave their job when they do not feel included.” Specifically, the survey found that while about 80% of women reported “some positive experiences as individuals, they are much less likely to say their organization overall is fair.” Overall, ~40% of the women surveyed agreed that their organizations are fair, with all employees receiving equitable treatment and equal chances to succeed. Additionally, women in sports administration are less likely than peers in other industries to have sponsors who can help steer their careers and advocate for them within their organizations, and while women in the sports industry are more likely than their peers in other sectors to feel they have the right skills to progress, most feel they need to leave their organizations to realize their goals. The Big South selects MVC Deputy Commissioner Montgomery as its next commissioner, starting May 15. Charleston Southern & Big South President Costin: “Announcing the Big South’s next commissioner is something that hasn’t happened in nearly 30 years, yet here we are. Kyle Kallander has captained the ship with a remarkably steady hand during the most turbulent waters in the history of college athletics. No one could have led this conference better than Kyle, so finding his successor was always going to seem like mission impossible. But we found the perfect candidate in Sherika Montgomery, whose meteoric rise from Big South student-athlete to Big South Commissioner offers the clearest possible evidence that the Big South Conference is in fact ‘Where Winners Are Made.’” Collegiate Sports Associates assisted with the search. The Biden administration’s draft policy on eligibility for transgender students “raises crucial questions about federal rights versus state rights and about who ought to determine eligibility rules,” according to Sportico’s McCann, who points out that 20 states currently ban transgender students from participating in sports consistent with their gender identities. South Dakota Governor Noem, a Republican, asserts: “South Dakota will not allow this [federal regulation] to stand. Only girls will play girls’ sports … President Biden, we’ll see you in Court.” All that said, it will likely be judges, not elected officials, who decide the fate of transgender participation, and on that score, McCann points out that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Alito’s recent dissenting opinion in a case involving a 12-year-old transgender girl from West Virginia who wishes to run on her school’s cross-country and track teams might provide some insight on what to expect. Alito: “This application concerns an important issue that this Court is likely to be required to address in the near future, namely, whether either [Title IX or the Equal Protection Clause] prohibits a state from restricting participation in women’s or girls’ sports based on genes or physiological or anatomical characteristics.” McCann: “Alito’s prediction of the Supreme Court ultimately deciding this topic is likely correct.” (link)

On3’s Prisbell notes Playfly has hired former JMI VP of Business Development Robinson for the newly created VP of Transition role. Playfly President Hedgpeth describes the transition team’s mission as “taking their highly specialized skill set and kind of pick[ing] up the pieces from the prior MMR partner and us[ing] their expertise to not only create a smooth transition but, I like to think, accelerate the process of and the quality of the transition to really set up the GM and operations team for success.” Hedgpeth goes on to remark that “we feel generally positive about FY24, but we are realistic that, with the headwinds that are out there, it inevitably will affect, and is starting to affect, some of our partners. So what we try to do is be as customized as we can to their needs. … It is a bit of a watershed moment for MMR for the landscape – the competitive landscape to the economy, the ramifications of COVID to the transfer portal to NIL. For us, we saw, even in starting the company, an opportunity to be a disruptor, and to come in and earn the trust, which is done day in and day out, with our existing properties and with new ones.” (link)

Michigan State continues to field pushback from those who disapprove of the Spartans’ sponsorship deal with Caesars Sportsbook, which The Detroit News’ Paul notes is reportedly worth $9M in total, “making it by far the largest single-business sponsor of Spartans athletics. No deal with any other company is worth more than $1M a year.” MSU Assoc. AD for Communications Larson says Playfly, MSU’s media rights holder, is “engaged in conversations with Caesars regarding the contract,” but MSU professor Kerr questions why it was ever signed. “There's just a lot of really positive activity here about stressing how we're going to take care of our students, and…this Caesars deal is just completely contradicting that.” Kerr adds: “I understand the athletic department's situation. They're kind of in an arms race: get as much money as they can to build the best facilities, hire the best coaches, recruit the best athletes. But, where's the line?" (link)

+ Freshly minted George Mason MBB HC Skinn's five-year deal will pay him $925K a year with $25K annual raises and a $25K annual retention bonus each April 1, per the Washington Post’s Stevens, who also notes Skinn is eligible to receive a one-year extension with either an NCAA Tournament or NIT berth. The Patriots would owe Skinn 100% of the annual compensation if it makes a change before April 1, 2025, 75% of the annual compensation if it makes a change before April 1, 2027, and 50% of the annual compensation if it makes a change on April 1, 2027, or later. Should Skinn take another job, his buyout starts at $925K and decreases incrementally each season to $250K in 2027. “As a comparison, Kim English's buyout to leave George Mason for another job before April 1 of this year was $1M. Was going to drop to $750K in Year 3, $500K in Year 4 and $250K in Year 5.” (link)

Instead, the Tigers will receive a partial payment, the amount of which has yet to be determined. (link)

The NBA set records for total attendance, average attendance, percentage of capacity and sellouts in the 2022-23 regular season. Its record 791 sellouts blew past the previous mark of 760 set during the 2018-19 season, and arenas were filled to an all-time-high 97% capacity. Meanwhile, the total attendance mark of 22.23M broke the previous record of 22.12M set in the 2017-18 season. This year also marked the first time NBA teams reached an average attendance of at least 18K, finishing the year at 18,007. (link)

The WNBA will expand its charter flights program to include flights for all postseason games beginning this year, WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship game and select regular-season games, such as when teams play back-to-back contests. The expansion is expected to cost the league around $4.5M. Commissioner Engelbert notes that chartering flights for teams playing on consecutive nights will be more difficult next year with no Olympic break or condensed World Cup schedule. “Next year we can’t do all of them. … Longer term, if we can get a really good media deal we can do something more fully for these players.” Regarding the playoff charter expansion, Engelbert says: “It was never coming up with money for one year, but creating a sustainable model for the charter program to continue in perpetuity. Once you do it, you have to do it every year.” (link)
