Illinois State Interim AD Beggs tells WGLT public radio she doesn’t want to be “just a placeholder,” adding that “what I really hope to do is take advantage of what I've been doing in my consulting work, which is strategic planning. So I plan to go in, and listen. I'm going to collect data, I'm going to listen to coaches and staff and students and donors and fans and boosters. And I'm going to help them plan and organize for the future. Set the table, essentially, for the next athletic director, who’s hopefully going to be here in the fall.” Beggs, who currently serves on the NCAA Board of Directors, also says she will work with Interim President Tarhule to fill some of the department’s vacancies. “We’re very lean right now. When you look at the organizational chart, there are quite a few positions open in the Athletics department. And so some of those will need to be filled sooner rather than later.” As a marketing professor, Beggs says she does plan on getting involved in reaching out to donors, saying: “I certainly understand communication, brand management. I think donors maybe need to see me at events and hear me talk and be reassured by what I'm trying to do. And so I think I will definitely play a part in donor relations and all of that.” Full Q&A. North Alabama AD Looney: “It was a wonderful tool to provide a ‘first look’ behind the curtain at the University, particularly beyond Athletics. It really helped me better understand the ‘voice’ on campus behind the numbers that I was able to pull. I also found great value in your log of presidential communication and archive of news narratives.” (link)

Football games would be played in Monterrey at Estadio BBVA, a 53,000-seat venue nicknamed El Gigante de Acero.” Dellenger also notes the league’s preferred MBB matchup would involve Kansas and Houston. (link); SI’s Johnson: “Most interesting thing about this is, as I'm told, this isn't planned to be a bunch of one-offs, more of an attempt at a long-term presence in Mexico.” (link)

Gambling regulators in Ohio instructed the state’s sportsbooks to halt betting on Alabama baseball games after “suspicious wagering activity was detected on the Crimson Tide's game against top-ranked LSU last Friday,” according to ESPN’s Purdum. The activity was flagged by U.S. Integrity, which sent an alert to its sportsbook clients. Purdum notes that “LSU led Alabama 8-1 after seven innings and held off a late rally by the Crimson Tide for an 8-6 victory on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. ESPN Chairman Pitaro talks with Bloomberg about going fully direct-to-consumer (DTC), explaining that “we’re going to get to a point where we take our entire network, our flagship programming, and make it available direct-to-consumer. That’s a ‘when,’ not an ‘if.’ … We’re only going to do it when it makes sense for our business and for our bottom line.” Pitaro also says he’s “confident we’re going to see eye-to-eye [with the NBA] on how to prioritize streaming” as it relates to a new media rights deal. “We’re proud of the fact that we’ve been able to create this must-have product that is still very much complementary to what we have on linear television.” Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Smith notes the cable and streaming subscription numbers continue to converge as cable subscribers continue cutting the cord. Streaming customers now make up about 25M subscribers while cable households account for roughly 74M. (link)

IBM CEO Krishna says the company plans to pause hiring for roles it thinks could be replaced with AI in the coming years. Specifically, Krishna says hiring for non-public-facing roles such as HR will be suspended or slowed. According to Fortune’s Ford, those roles account for around 26K workers, and Krishna says: “I could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period.” Krishna does clarify, however, that some HR functions, such as evaluating workforce composition and productivity, probably won’t be replaced over the next decade. Sportico’s McCann unpacks the NCAA’s motion opposing class certification in House v. NCAA, noting the NCAA claims a certified class action lawsuit could result in the association paying out billions of dollars in damages. To qualify for class certification, McCann explains that “those bringing the case must also have suffered injuries typical of others. The brief undermines the notion that college athletes suing over NIL and broadcast NIL (BNIL) ought to be in the same class. It argues that college athletes must bring individual cases since there are ‘substantial differences’ in players’ NIL values. Furthermore, the NCAA argues that identifying who ought to be paid is “impossible” because some would have, or would in the future, stay in school and keep roster spots that would otherwise go to other players. The brief specifically cites LSU women’s basketball student-athlete Reese and Connecticut WBB student-athlete Bueckers as individuals who say they intend to stay in college due to higher NIL earnings. Houston has “expressed interest and is on the short list of men’s basketball teams that could play in Mexico City as early as the upcoming 2023-24 season,” according to the Houston Chronicle’s Duarte, who reports the idea could eventually expand to include baseball and women’s soccer as the Big 12 attempts to grow its footprint south of the border. The league is also exploring potentially playing football games in Mexico, and if the Mexico games go well, Duarte reports the international matchups could eventually move to Europe and Africa. FAU Interim President Volnick talks with the FAU Board of Trustees about leveraging the Owls’ men’s basketball success, noting that “we know that we will have an increased interest in coming to FAU. That doesn’t just mean that we’re going to increase enrollment. What that might mean is we keep enrollment where our goals have been set but we’re more selective in the types of students.” Meanwhile, FAU officials say Q1 royalties increased from $35K last year to nearly $60K this year and that the Owls benefited from $1.91B worth of advertising, compared to $133M a year ago. Moreover, total gifts to FAU increased by 80%, while donors increased by 104%. Gifts to athletics increased 341%, while the number of athletic donors increased by 417%. Visits to FAU’s athletics social media pages also dramatically increased, with a 617% uptick in profile visits on Instagram, a 337% increase in Twitter visits and a 659% increase in Facebook page visits. Lawmakers in Hawaii are looking at the possibility of a development partner investing some of its own money into revamping Aloha Stadium. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Gomes reports that a state assessment in 2022 estimated it would cost “$430M to develop a new stadium with bleacher seating for 25K spectators and no roof on a ‘less desirable’ location within the 98-acre site in Halawa.” However, Governor Green and lawmakers have limited state funding on the project to $399.5M. Department of Budget and Finance Director Salaveria says $400M is not enough to develop an acceptable DI stadium, adding that the incentive for a developer to take on some of the cost would involve higher revenue from operations, including concerts and other entertainment, and possibly profiting from developing the surrounding mixed-use community. Salaveria also notes the goal is to produce a request for proposals by the end of this year and have a new stadium open in 2028. (link)

A date misunderstanding has caused the MAC to relocate its men’s golf championship to Alabama. Commissioner Steinbrecher: “This is certainly one of the championships given where it falls in the calendar that it maybe makes sense to look and see if we can move a little bit south. I’m pretty consistent with our schools — I like championships to be in our communities and on our campuses unless there’s some really specific reason not to. Well, this is something that makes sense.” Originally slated to play at the Columbus Country Club, which booked the event for 2024 instead of 2023, the championship will now be played at the Canebrake Club in Athens, Alabama. Moving the tournament permanently to a warmer climate is on the docket for the MAC’s spring meetings. (link)

New on Connect: Indiana State Baseball HC Hannahs joins Connect/MB Sports’ Banker to talk about the Sycamores’ success on the diamond this season, the overall state of the game, particularly in relation to roster management, recruiting, and transfers and what he’s taken away from his time as a college president. Hannahs says of the latter: “I thought Coaches were tough. … I learned administrators were a lot tougher. Administrators have to wear a lot (of hats) and don’t get to react like coaches do. I learned a lot in that process. There’s no such thing as low-maintenance or high-maintenance. … The better part of that is no-maintenance when it comes to what administrators are dealing with day in and day out. You think you are a team player, but I think you see a different aspect of team player when you oversee an athletics department. How I approach things have changed since that experience as a college president. We try to be no-maintenance for our administrators.” Lots more in the full Q&A. (link)
