The DII Presidents Council endorsed a process to identify the two independent members to serve on the DII Executive Board, the modified version of the Presidents Council that will take over Feb. 1, 2024 and approved adjusting the minimum contest and participant requirements for championship selection for FB, MGOLF, WGOLF, MLAX and MSOC. The Council also approved budget increases to championships, membership distributions and more for 2023-24. (link)

Cal State San Bernardino selects CSUN (DI) Assoc. AD for Administration and Operations Amer as its next AD. CSUSB VP for Student Affairs Olivérez: "We are thrilled and happy to welcome Shareef to the Coyote Family as the new leader of our athletics department. [...] The hard truth is that Upper Iowa cannot continue to support such a high number of intercollegiate programs given the reduction of tuition revenue that is being generated currently by fewer number of students who are attending colleges across the country. The 80 MGOLF teams and 32 student-athletes competing in next month's championship have been unveiled. Regional play will tee off on May 11 with the DII Championship beginning May 22 in Warren, OH. (link)

Three Eastern New Mexico WBB student-athletes have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging that former Greyhounds HC De Los Reyes repeatedly coerced them to submit to “treatments” by her volunteer trainer husband, who they say sexually assaulted them. The Albuquerque Journal’s Heild and Grammer report that when “complaints to ENMU athletics director Paul Weir allegedly went ignored for more than a year, two school trainers realized the women had been assaulted and finally reported the abuse to the university’s human resources department, states the 30-page lawsuit filed by the women, who have since transferred from the school.” Earlier this week, ENMU released a statement that indicated an investigation into the program resulted in “no findings of an abusive nature” but “did identify opportunities to improve training practices and internal policies with regards to volunteers and volunteer services. Upon receiving the initial complaint on this matter, ENMU instructed the volunteer to cease any continued services with student-athletes. During the investigation the student-athletes were given contact information for various resources including law enforcement.” (link)

On the opportunity he steps into, Gordon: “I think that's unique about our association is while we do have an incredibly robust membership, there's a lot of coaches that we're not serving and so we want to identify where we lack to increase our membership from a service standpoint. We also serve and in a very meaningful way Beach Volleyball and Men's Volleyball. Beach Volleyball continues to grow at an incredible rate. … The men's game is continuing to grow. We're seeing huge grassroot efforts at the high school levels and more states that are adding it to a championship level. Nebraska's (DI) Volleyball Day event in August, which will begin with an exhibition between Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State (NE) inside Memorial Stadium, has sold out. Approximately 82,900 tickets were claimed between the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the general public sale on Wednesday and Thursday. NU reports 17,900 of the tickets were claimed in the season-ticket holder on-sale. Huskers AD Alberts: “We knew the interest in this match would be extremely high, but to sell out Memorial Stadium is truly remarkable. I've heard lots of talk about breaking the NCAA volleyball attendance record, but given the incredible demand for this event we want to explore every avenue to see if it's possible to challenge the record for the most attended women's sporting event in this country.” (link)

Alaska Fairbanks begins a $1M renovation of Alaska Airlines Gymnasium in the Patty Center that includes a new gym floor, LED lights and more. Head Athletic Trainer Trolli believes updating the surface and underfloor may decrease the injuries student-athletes experience, with AD Anundson adding: "The interest was sparked for renovation by student athletes that thought their injuries were from the floor. You want athletes to compete in a facility that they will not only enjoy coming to everyday but feel safe doing so." The project is primarily funded from private support, with two UAF donors kickstarting the fundraising process, and is expected to be ready August 1. (link)

Nebraska-Kearney WBB HC Eighmey has stepped down to take the same position at Idaho (DI). Lopers AD Bauer: “Carrie helped elevate our program and built it into a national contender. She grew fan interest and community support and positively impacted Loper women's basketball and our student-athletes in countless ways. […] We will move quickly in hiring a new coach, and I am confident we will find an accomplished coach who will continue our Loper women's basketball tradition of success.” (link)

Hillsdale WBB HC Averkamp departs after three seasons and will be succeeded by AC Brennan. AD Tharp: “We were extremely fortunate in this situation to have a great head coaching candidate already on staff in Brianna Brennan. She's played an important role in the women's basketball team's success the last two seasons and she's proven herself ready for this opportunity.” (link)

Emporia State names Kansas State (DI) Assoc. HC Ostermann as its next WBB HC. ESU AD Spafford: ”Coach Ostermann and I worked together at Kansas State. Knowing him as a person in addition to his experience at several levels of collegiate basketball as an assistant coach and head coach, extensive post season experience, his ties to the state of Kansas and the MIAA, met our goals in the search process and for the program.” (link)
