Cal Poly Humboldt selects Sparta Area School District AD/former Cal Poly (DI) Deputy AD Pettit as its next AD, starting June 8. President Jackson: “I am so impressed by Dr. Pettit's experience and knowledge, and I think he is going to make a big impact at Humboldt. Augusta AD Erlacher sits down with WRDW’s Rogers to dive into the Jags program. Erlacher notes the biggest area of need in his first year is facility enhancements, with the “next big thing” being the outdoor experience, namely AU’s Baseball and Softball facilities. Also of note, Christenberry Fieldhouse is set to undergo a $5M external upgrade over the next year. Asked about sport sponsorship and the possibility of adding FB, Erlacher emphasizes the need to “fund our current programs the best that we possibly can before we start entertaining any other sports.”  (link)

Newberry will add Acrobatics & Tumbling (link) and Women’s Wrestling (link) in 2024-25. AD Johnson cites rapidly growing sports and commitment to enhance opportunities for female student-athletes as drivers.

HBCU Gameday’s Gaither reports the NCAA turned down a proposal for a 2023 Week Zero game between the champs of the CIAA and SIAC. Gaither’s sources indicate it was due to lack of Week Zero precedent in DII, but there is still hope for legislative relief to allow the game to happen in 2024. Should the game happen, it would be produced by HBCUGo and broadcast on TheGrio. (link)

Concord FB HC Walker resigns after two seasons and will be succeeded by AC Ferguson. Mountain Lions AD Garrett: "Coach Ferguson will continue to carry on the foundation that has already been built at Concord. He has coached some of the best offenses that CU Football has ever seen. Daktronics has secured $100M in capital commitments, including a new three-year, $75M credit line from JPMorgan Chase, which replaces the $35M credit facility it had with US Bank, and a $25M convertible debt financing agreement with major shareholder Alta Fox Capital Management. JPMorgan Chase becomes the company’s primary commercial bank and all debt obligations to US Bank were paid off prior to the switch. (link)

Meta Director of Sports Partnerships Sethi joins NCAA correspondent Katz to talk about how student-athletes are using their social media platforms to share their stories and drive the conversation around mental health. Sethi explains the importance of “getting some of these topics out in the open because that’s not only healthy for these student-athletes to share their stories, it’s incredibly impactful for their fans to hear those stories as well. How many of those fans are experiencing that even if they’re not playing in college? Maybe they’re playing youth sports. Maybe they’re struggling in the classroom with some of those same topics. One of the great things about NIL is it’s not just about trying to get everybody to make a million dollars during their college career. It can be about you having a community or a cause that you care about and being able to participate in this era and leverage your community…to drive support for those communities and causes, and mental health is clearly near or at the top of the list when it comes to things we’re all thinking about.” (link)
