Northern Iowa AD Harris talks with AthleticDirectorU’s Brown about his strategies for setting expectations, specifically as they relate to strategic planning, fundraising, and facilities projects. Harris notes that in addition to taking into account the expectations of a president or chancellor, it’s important to remain true to one’s own expectations rather than try to ensure everyone is happy. “Everyone else can do their evaluations. They can do them on social media, they can do them at home, they can do them in their local bar or wherever they choose to do it, but you want to make sure you understand what the expectation from your president and how you’re going to be evaluated and how can you meet and exceed that expectation. Now, because the job is public, you know there are any number of other people that are going to have expectations as well. … Everybody has an opinion, but not everyone has an informed opinion.” Full conversation on ADU. Interesting comments from Crakes Media’s namesake to CBS’ Dodd on the hire of new Big Ten Commissioner Petitti: “I do think the college sports people make a little too much of the athletic director [background for commissioners]. As somebody who managed relationships at Fox … I can tell you college campuses can have a provincial kind of view. [...] [Expansion is] over. Calm the hell down. It's coming, but it's a couple of years down the line. A lot of this has to do with managing what you have and getting ready for a couple of years in the future. It's time to digest some of this stuff and operate properly. I think he's got the experience and strategic vision for the future. This is about, right now, an operations execution story. After he's been running this for a while and he gets it under his belt, he'll be able to figure out strategy for the next phase, which is a couple of years away.” (link)

Mississippi State set a new single-game NCAA Baseball on-campus attendance record when 16,423 fans saw a walk-off win over Ole Miss in Starkville on Saturday. The Bulldogs broke their own record of 15,586 set back in 2014, also against the Rebels. More: “The new record comes during Super Bulldog Weekend. Mississippi State football hosted its spring game in the early afternoon and country artist Brett Eldredge will perform a concert at Dudy Noble Field after the baseball game.” (link)

+ Dayton AD Sullivan expresses confidence in MBB HC Grant and says he was made aware of rumors that Grant was considering retirement, but “it’s really hard to engage or respond to fundamentally inaccurate social media or speculation to begin with. If the very premise is inaccurate, you’d kind of always be chasing the internet. There was never any discussion between coach Grant and I about retirement. I’ll just leave it at that.” Still, Sullivan notes that last season was disappointing and that “close doesn’t count.” Acknowledging that the Flyers were “decimated with injuries,” Sullivan still says it’s a “results business,” so it’s important to “look in the mirror and not just blame external conditions. … We perpetually look for improvement. There’s no finish line in this business, right? You’ve never arrived. You’ve never won enough to do that.” (link)

New Orleans Saints Director of Sports Science Rhea, who previously held the same position at Alabama, reacts to the NCAA’s removal of limits on official visits by recruits: “And the NCAA removes any remaining interest that I might have had to leave the NFL and return to college. Kids should be able to visit as many campuses as they want on their own but official visits mean support staff will give up even more family time to entertain them.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Brown outlines what’s ahead for EP as the publication celebrates its third birthday. First, Brown notes there will be a focus on expanding D1.classroom, a sports management curriculum-support product designed to help overworked instructors. As a supplement to that product, EP is hard at work turning the AD Simulator 3000 “into an actual, Honest-To-God Computer Game that we plan to roll out to our D1.classroom partners first. Action Network’s Rovell adds to his reporting about LifeWallet’s financial performance, noting that “Friday’s 8-K filing to the SEC said those numbers ($3.9M in revenue over nine months vs. a projected $992M and operating losses of $118M) — as with all data the company published from June to Dec. 2022 — have been declared unreliable, with the company adding that it identified ‘material weaknesses in internal controls related to the accounting for complex transactions.’ … With the news, it seems inevitable that LifeWallet will trade below $1 for 30 consecutive days, triggering action by the NASDAQ. When that happens next week, the exchange can send a deficiency notice that gives the company six months to regain compliance. If the company doesn’t fulfill its requirement to do so, the stock exchange can request a hearing to reassess the company’s standing.” (link)

Prep Baseball Report President Duncan tells D1Baseball’s Rogers that the newly approved recruiting model “will ultimately negatively impact high school players” because it “indirectly makes the transfer portal even more powerful and more relevant. Recruiters will spend more time mining the transfer portal, and junior colleges will continue to grow in talent depth because more and more players will be pushed to junior college. And I look at it like this, too: mid-majors will continue to become the junior college, so to speak, of some of the power conferences. Ultimately, I think it’s going to knock the entire recruiting ecosystem more off kilter than it already is. When you legislate free will and natural selection, it never ends up well.” (link)

According to the Bayesian Performance Metric (BPM) and statistician Miyakawa’s player ratings, 88 MBB student-athletes “up-transferred” last cycle, making the jump from a mid- or low-major to the Power 5 + Big East. The Horizon produced the best up transfers with an average BPM score of 1.32, and Connecticut was the biggest beneficiary of up transfer improvement with a BPM score of nine. The Big East overall also benefited most from up transfers with a BPM score of 17. More data. (link)

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Graney on possible hiccups for UNLV in its potential pursuit for Power 5 inclusion: “Perception versus reality. This isn’t 40 years go when talking how the school should be defined academically. It has made more-than-favorable strides. Has a law school and dental school and medical school. A research institute. One of the country’s best hospitality schools. But it also ranks 146th in public universities by U.S. News and World Report, perhaps too low for some of the highbrow presidents across the Pac-12.” Comparing the Rebels to San Diego State, Graney: “The market continues to grow. As 40th nationally, it has around 870,000 television households. It would be the smallest in the Pac-12 today, right after Salt Lake City (1.1 million). For comparison, San Diego has 1.13 million and Dallas-Fort Worth (where a reported Pac-12 target of Southern Methodist resides) 2.96 million. But the Aztecs also exist in the coveted Southern California market, which will not have Pac-12 team after the impending departure of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten.” (link)

The 2023 New Mexico Legislative Session has concluded voting on financial matters for the state’s universities. New Mexico State received $3.15M for capital projects, an increase from $2.4M last year. Additionally, the Aggies received an uptick of $1.5M in recurring money to add to its operating budget after receiving roughly $6M for that last year. Athletics also got an extra $425K from a one-time junior bill to be added to the operating budget and earmarked for FB equipment. A handful of capital projects were approved, including $2.2M for Aggie Memorial Stadium improvements, $550K for FB facility improvements, $200K for WBB locker room renovation and $100K each for the volleyball locker room upgrades and for hoops equipment. For comparison, New Mexico athletics received at least $6.8M for capital projects, $2M of which will go toward UNM arena improvements and $3.965M for renovations to its athletic facility, and hauled in another $1.2M from the junior bill. South Carolina AVP of Institutional Relations and Public Affairs Stensland to TheBigSpur message board: “Since several of you have asked, I wanted to share a brief update on the stadium project RFI we issued in February: Following our issuance of the RFI, the university received inquiries from more than two dozen companies, and we received written responses from several development groups with experience executing major multi-phase projects. State procurement regulations prevent us from sharing additional details at this time, including names of respondents, but we are extremely pleased with the responses and the opportunities that lie ahead. Our goal remains to explore a comprehensive land use agreement that will allow for improvements to Williams-Brice Stadium while paving the way for the development of more than 800 acres near the stadium and other areas near campus. We are now focused on refining a scope of work and adding definition to the project. We will provide updates as the project progresses.” (link)

Special moment at the Virginia spring FB game as tailback Hollins, who survived a gunshot wound to his stomach in the November shooting attack that killed three Cavaliers, got the first touch Saturday to a standing ovation. Hollins last month: “I could have left, I could have transferred, but I think of that as sweeping things under the rug and not handling the situation as best as I could. The best place for me to move forward -- not move on, but move forward -- is in Charlottesville with the people who shared that experience with me. No one across the country feels the way we feel here in the facility. No one in the country knows how I feel about the situation besides the people here in this facility, and I got an uneasy feeling when I thought about leaving. I'm glad I stayed because the support is what I need right now to get through." (link)

Florida State Softball student-athlete Mudge OpEds for the Tampa Bay Times about her experience with NIL and speaking in front of Congress on the topic. Mudge lauds the positives and appreciates the guidance the Seminoles’ compliance department provided, but adds: “But even with support available to help athletes navigate NIL, there are still problems with how NIL works holistically. Different states have different laws on what they allow athletes or schools to do, and some states have no NIL laws at all. This can make things complicated for current athletes, and it also gives some athletes and schools advantages over competitors at schools in other states. Not to mention these discrepancies between schools can become a factor for recruiting and other ways when players are choosing which school to attend. I hope that through my testimony in Congress, and the testimony of many of the others on the panel, Congress will be motivated to set uniform guidelines that give every student-athlete the same resources and information to help them work through their NIL opportunities and keep every school playing by the same standards.” (link)
