The NBA and NBPA have put discussions about lowering the age limit on the back burner, per ESPN’s Wojnarowski, who reports: “Talks on lowering the minimum age limit for American players from 19 years old to 18 and allowing players to again jump to the NBA out of high school had been a part of ongoing talks on a new collective agreement, but neither side ultimately felt strongly enough on change to make it a significant bargaining chip. … NBA owners and executives were largely indifferent or fully against returning to high school gymnasiums to evaluate players, and even less enthusiastic about that idea without concessions from the NBPA on providing increased access to pre-draft player medical information and increased participation in several elements of the draft combine.” (link)

Connecticut is among a group of schools trying to help international student-athletes find a safe way to benefit from NIL in the U.S. Huskies AD Benedict and UConn Werth Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation’s Noble explain the university is developing classes and a minor program of study open to all students that could help student-athletes take advantage of an exception in the F-1 visa rules known as Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Noble explains that if a student-athlete has a major in which creating a business around their NIL would fit into coursework, an international student could make money in a very narrow scope through two courses totaling six credits called professional practice of entrepreneurship the institute offers to all students. Classes with an option for CPT could be part of a personal branding entrepreneurship minor the Werth Institute hopes to launch next year. (link)

Lehigh Deputy AD Troyan sits down with The Brown & White student newspaper to discuss a number of topics, including the biggest change she has seen during her 35 years with the Mountain Hawks. Troyan: “Resources have also played an important role in the support of our programs: we have a strength and conditioning team, a leadership development team and a sports medicine team that all play a critical role in the development of our student-athletes and the competitive success of our programs. We didn’t have any of that when I started at Lehigh.” There has also been an emphasis placed on equity, and Troyan explains: “Just the uniforms, practice gear, game gear, even how you traveled is very equitable in terms of the student-athlete experience (and) the expectations we’re providing student-athletes. It’s not different from being a male or a female, and I can’t say that was the case when I first started here.” Full interview. (link)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Judd reports that “weeks before” the vehicle collision which claimed the lives of Georgia student-athlete Willock and recruiting analyst LeCroy occurred, a “team official learned that [LeCroy] had an extensive record of speeding and intervened to minimize her latest citation.” LeCroy had received her fourth speeding ticket in six years in October, when she had been pulled over and ticketed for driving 77 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, and Judd reports UGA Director of Player Support Gantt asked a Morgan County court clerk to amend the ticket to indicate LeCroy was driving only 14 mph over the speed limit, per the clerk, who says she denied the request based on LeCroy’s history. UGA says a background check conducted at the time of LeCroy’s hiring did not “reveal any driving information that disqualified Ms. LeCroy from driving or cautioned a need for additional evaluation.” (link)
