#10: On3’s Wittry assesses what Saint Francis Brooklyn’s decision to eliminate its athletic programs means for the overall landscape, and one longtime administrator commenting: “That’s where this stress is coming nationally. It is the small privates. They are struggling and they’re not going to admit it. They’re going to try to roll with it. They’re going to try to prop up that basketball program to make like they’re doing fine.” Meanwhile, the longtime administrator goes on to predict there will be a “canary in the coal mine,” adding that “those small privates, they’re in a world of hurt and I mean a world of hurt with where this thing is headed.” More from Wittry. #8: Georgia Tech FB HC Key, whose mother was a schoolteacher, got emotional when discussing the tragic school shooting in Nashville this week, saying: “There’s nothing political and nothing religious about this, but something has to change, and I had a chance to stand up here and be in front of a camera and if one person hears me say that and agrees and does something to help force a change and a thousand other people say something negative about it, I don’t care because it worked. And if this one thing I say can help somebody else say something and maybe have the guts to stand up and do something, then maybe something will happen. As long as people sit up there and bicker and argue, more and more kids are gonna die. Because it hasn’t changed. So, something's gotta change.” A write-up doesn’t do this justice. #5: The Athletic’s Staples pens a strongly worded riposte to Notre Dame President Jenkins and AD Swarbrick’s New York Times op-ed, asserting the piece “cloaked itself in nostalgia while nakedly asking the U.S. government to codify a system that will allow schools and their executives and coaches to enjoy all the benefits of running a couple of major American sports with none of the pesky annoyances like paying market value for the talent or negotiating with the workforce. … Instead of trying to find a way to pay revenue-sport athletes their market value as athletes, school administrators complain about the name, image and likeness system foisted upon them by state legislatures who grew tired of seeing schools break the Sherman Act in an effort to keep anyone from providing athletes anything beyond tuition, room and board. Swarbrick and Jenkins are correct that this did result in a sham system, but they conveniently leave out the reason.” Lots more. (link)
