Ferrum AD Cleive Adams chats with The Roanoke Times’ Mark Berman about the Panthers’ transition to DII, noting of the move from DIII: “In the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (DIII), we were one of many. … Now we have positioned ourselves as one of the few in the state. […] Geographically, you start looking at trying to reclaim the commonwealth. … There’s a wealth of (Virginia) talent that we have not been able to attract here.” Further on recruiting: “Our recruiting popularity … has increased in our home state in this … cycle and I don’t see that changing because we have changed the product. We are marketing ourselves differently from an athletic standpoint. We’re redefining ourselves as an institution. (In) the Division II space, we’re going to attract … a higher-quality student-athlete.” Ferrum will fund 35 full scholarships across its department this year, with a goal of gradually increasing to 100 in 2028-29, which would put the Panthers on par with their Conference Carolinas peers. Adams understands the transition to the league will be “extremely difficult,” adding: “Do I think we’re going to be in the top one-third of the conference (standings) right out of the gate? Absolutely not. […] It’s a little bit easier … to get seasoned talent because of the transfer portal. In several sports, there are opportunities for us to compete a little sooner than people think. … We have some quality rosters (already because) … the ODAC’s as tough as it comes in Division III. Division II is a sweet spot because of the (new) roster limitations in Division I. … It’s like a funnel effect coming down. And if you’re strategic enough in your packaging, … you may be able to get a point guard that played (in Division I) because you have enough budget to make that work.” (link)

Lackawanna AD Erik Larson sits down with Midwest Sports Net’s Joey McWilliams about the Falcons’ jump from NJCAA to DII. Larson notes two unique aspects of the transition: all student-athletes have to be four-year degree-seeking students, so all current and future student-athletes will transition to four-year degree programs, and before applying, LC has to be competing against other four-year members. The Falcons will finish out their time in the NJCAA in 2025-26 before competing against four-year schools in 2026-27. On the impact on the institution as a whole: “This almost gives us the full transition effect to go from a two-year to a four-year institution. Now, that being said, we are still an innovative college and are still going to be offering those two-year degrees for those students for whom those programs still have value, but from an athletic standpoint, yes, we're going to continue to add bachelor's degrees. We're going to have the opportunity here very soon to add master's programming and so, with the transition in athletics, it just continues to grow what the college is able to do.” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ Former Emporia State Women’s Soccer HC Bryan Sailer’s lawsuit against ESU and former AD David Spafford has been partially dismissed, with all claims against Spafford having been dismissed. Sailer’s Title IX complaint about the university ignoring the program remains a part of the filing, as Judge John Lungstrum partially dismissed a separate Title IX complaint and his First Amendment complaint. + Former Wayne State (MI) Women’s Tennis HC Sheila Snyder is suing the university, President Kimberly Andrews Espy and AD Erica Wallace for gender discrimination. Snyder claims she was forced to retire after an investigation into an incident in which she “flipped a cell phone across a table to get the attention of one of her players while ‘possibly using profanity,’” which violated workplace violence policies, and that a Football coach was not forced to resign after a similar incident in 2023. The U.S. Supreme Court has granted review of two cases in Idaho and West Virginia that will focus on states’ ability to ban transgender student-athletes from competing on women’s sports teams. Sportico’s Michael McCann writes: “The two cases present two interrelated legal questions. The first is whether Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in public school programs and activities, permits or prohibits a transgender ban. […] The second question is whether transgender bans comply with the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, which forbids states from treating citizens differently on the basis of impermissible reasons—including whether a citizen is a man or woman. The key issue for the Supreme Court is whether a distinction on the basis of one’s sex at birth for eligibility to play sports is permissible or impermissible.” The Court is expected to hear oral arguments during its next term, with a decision likely to come next summer. Among first-year students enrolled in fall 2023, 86.4% returned to college in the spring for their second semester, which marks the second-highest persistence rate since 2015, according to new data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Retention rates also hit their highest level since 2015, with 83.7% of students returning to the same school for their second semester. Another 2.6% transferred to another institution, while 13.6% didn’t return for the spring. (link)
