Wisconsin-Parkside taps FAR/Professor of Geosciences Skalbeck as Interim AD as the Rangers begin their search for the next AD. FB leaders in Canada are publicly campaigning to bring back Simon Fraser FB. Multiple constituents are asking for further clarity around the decision-making process, including whether other affiliations with U Sports or Canada West were considered, with Football Canada President Mulling expressing skepticism around the cost-cutting rationale, as “This announcement was made a day-and-a-half into the start of a new fiscal year.” CFL Commissioner Ambrosie, writing in part: “Ultimately, our football ecosystem needs to rally together and do everything in our collective power to help save Simon Fraser’s program. … Saving the Simon Fraser University football program would certainly be an exceptional result, and the risk of losing that program is certainly a circumstance that demands an exception.” SFU Football Alumni Society Director Orris is working to find a way to play this upcoming season, noting they could file an injunction claiming breach of contract, adding: “I'm hoping we don't have to do that, but nobody's prepared to walk away from this without a full airing of what's going on. If it becomes apparent that there is no way to go forward, well, okay, we'll have to face that when it happens. But nobody is prepared to concede that at this stage and there’s a lot of angry people out there.” (link, link)

The Biden administration’s draft policy on eligibility for transgender students “raises crucial questions about federal rights versus state rights and about who ought to determine eligibility rules,” according to Sportico’s McCann, who points out that 20 states currently ban transgender students from participating in sports consistent with their gender identities. South Dakota Governor Noem, a Republican, asserts: “South Dakota will not allow this [federal regulation] to stand. Only girls will play girls’ sports … President Biden, we’ll see you in Court.” All that said, it will likely be judges, not elected officials, who decide the fate of transgender participation, and on that score, McCann points out that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Alito’s recent dissenting opinion in a case involving a 12-year-old transgender girl from West Virginia who wishes to run on her school’s cross-country and track teams might provide some insight on what to expect. Alito: “This application concerns an important issue that this Court is likely to be required to address in the near future, namely, whether either [Title IX or the Equal Protection Clause] prohibits a state from restricting participation in women’s or girls’ sports based on genes or physiological or anatomical characteristics.” McCann: “Alito’s prediction of the Supreme Court ultimately deciding this topic is likely correct.” (link)

Hawaii Pacific XC HC Sgambati and former WBB HC Takatsuka filed separate lawsuits against the school and AD Snell, alleging discriminatory and retaliatory behavior in violation of Hawaii’s Whistleblower Protection Act. Takatsuka alleges that he was “subjected to pervasive animus in Defendant HPU’s workplace due to his race and gender” and “has suffered humiliation, angst, damage to his reputation, loss of income, loss of wage earning capacity, and general and special damages.” Sgambati, whose complaint stems from her reporting of an incident in which she says MBB staff violated COVID policy in the weight room, which she oversees: “Myself and others reported discrimination and harassment but were ignored. We have a great staff, but are losing people because of the toxic, hostile work environment. The athletics staff and student-athletes deserve fair and equitable treatment and a positive environment we can all thrive in.” (link)

RealResponse Founder Chadwick in a guest column for SBJ emphasizes the need for leaders in the sports industry to “actively foster a positive environment that encourages communication in a productive and protected fashion without recourse.” To that end, Chadwick submits that “leaders must consider the power dynamics at play within their organizations, as well as potential generational differences in communication styles. … If the belief is that a 19-year-old or twenty something raised on instant messaging and social media will confidently walk into a coach’s or the head of HR’s office for a face-to-face conversation, expect to be disappointed.” Leaders, Chadwick continues, “can’t merely create feedback channels and call it a day. They must create the right channels, help cultivate relationships that welcome feedback, and provide assurances of confidentiality with no threat of reprisal.” More. (link)
