With a full financial audit coming at Illinois State, WGLT says there was also an audit completed a year ago that determined the athletic department was “high risk” & “needs improvement.” Key details: “Limited resources may be partly to blame. Athletics cited staffing constraints in several of its responses to the auditor’s findings, hoping that additional hiring will ‘provide a pace and focus that allows for more attention to these details.’ Athletics told the auditor it was ‘not straight forward’ to track receipts from over 100 credit card users on staff – more than most departments on campus.” Lots more financial & reporting nuances in the article. Utah AD Harlan covers several topics with KSL Sports, including College Football Playoff expansion, about which he says: “I think greater access to that championship is better. … For our conference, having gone through such a tough challenge with the LA schools leaving last June, once the CFP expansion became permanent, if there were folks looking over the fence to other possibilities, you kind of had to recalibrate and rethink. Now there is more access and, in most years, even without the LA schools, our data showed two will get in.” On the league’s media deal: “I do believe we are getting to that final time, but I’ve probably said that a few other times, but we aren’t going to take any deal. We’re going to take a good deal. I feel like we’ll get that wrapped up and then get after another competitive year starting in August.” (link)

Kent State AD Richmond, who recently inked a contract extension with the Golden Flashes, sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Brown to discuss his journey developing a personal value system which has informed his professional purpose. Richmond explains that by “following life’s breadcrumbs,” he has found ways to combine his principles, values and experiences for a single purpose: being a “transformational leader who has a positive impact on people’s lives.” Richmond advises those who are still following life’s breadcrumbs, to find people who are “transformational or relational and not transactional because those people are going to look to invest in you in a profound way. And it might not be the general articulation of ‘I want you to find your core values.’ It’s going to be, ‘Hey, what do you want to do? What makes you happy? … People are going to be curious. Find those people, engage those people.” Full interview. (link)

Oklahoma continues to celebrate Sooners AD Castiglione’s 25 years in Norman, and among those who recall their experiences with him over the years is President Harroz, who says on football game days: "Joe's in a suit and I think it's indicative in his belief, his fundamental understanding that OU athletics matters, it transcends sport. He has taught here (as an adjunct professor at OU's College of Education after earning his master's of education degree in May of 2007) and he has been involved with the rest of the university. He understands that athletics is not an island. Athletics is in many ways the connective tissue to all the stakeholders of the university – the students, faculty, staff, alumni – in the broader world as it looks at the University of Oklahoma, and he treats it that way. That's why he shows up in coat and tie." Lots more. (link); Castiglione was also presented with a framed jersey during a Sooners softball game over the weekend. (link)

SBJ’s Smith reports San Diego State has inked a 10-year MMR deal with JMI Sports. Notably: “The new arrangement will be a revenue-share model as opposed to a revenue guarantee, which is how most multimedia rights deals are structured. San Diego State opted to enter into a revenue share.” Aztecs AD Wicker: “They’re going to want to work toward the maximum they can get. It feels like a better deal long term.” Playfly was the incumbent via its Fox collegiate properties acquisition. (link)

How would an MLS team in San Diego impact San Diego State? Aztecs AD Wicker: “We continue to have really good conversations, and we're looking forward to hopefully getting something done sooner rather than later, and getting that last piece of the puzzle in the stadium from what we had originally planned. [...] The Chargers weren't great teammates, if you will. So as you look at our stadium, the only exclusivity in our stadium is our naming rights partner. If we're pouring Pepsi in the building, and this partner wanted to come in and put Coke on the front of their jersey, they could do that. We've made all of our seating available to an MLS partner when they come in. So all of our premium seating, we don't control any of it for an MLS partner." Furthermore, Wicker says marketing and sponsorship dollars would remain with the MLS team, which might mean missing out on some “exclusivity opportunities…but if I have successful partners in the building, San Diego State's going to be better off in the long run.” (link)

Hampton has received $1M from TowneBank for naming rights within Armstrong Stadium. The partnership includes funding for the installation of a trophy suite within Armstrong Stadium, the “Pirate on the Move” travel campaign that allows Hampton Athletics to support fundraising activities during athletic events away from the university, and establishing a sideline injury tent for football student-athletes. D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle is joined by National Field Hockey Coaches Association Executive Director Clark and USA Field Hockey Executive Director Hoskins to discuss the Field Hockey Forward program, through which the two organizations are teaming up to promote the benefits of college field hockey and increase the number of NCAA programs. Clark notes there are currently 286 field hockey programs across all NCAA divisions, including 82 in DI and explains: “We want to take the 82 strong teams and just continue to grow incrementally at an expectation that is realistic for both our organization, student-athletes, as well as the institutions hosting them, certainly setting those institutions up for success. It’s important not to add too quickly, but also we want to see some decent growth over the next two to five years.” Check out the full Q&A on Connect. (link)

The Athletic’s Emerson observes that 14 players from Georgia’s 2021 defense have now been drafted (not all by the Eagles), with half going in the first round. “Only one player who started the National Championship Game against Alabama in 2021 was not drafted, while four players who came off the bench in that game have been drafted…so far. Emphasis on so far.” Emerson goes on to note that “10 members of UGA’s offense on that 2021 team have been drafted, along with punter Jake Camarda. The offense still has several key players with a chance to be drafted. … Add it all together, and of the 54 Georgia players who appeared on the participation report for that national championship, almost half (25) have been drafted, and eventually, the number could approach 40.” (link)

The longest-serving AD among Power 5 leaders, Oklahoma’s Castiglione says after 25 years at the helm in Norman that he is not inclined to pass the buck during such a critical time in Sooners history, “No, no, no. I wouldn’t be that type of leader. There’s a lot of evaluation, assessment, strategic thinking that went into determining what was best for our program, before that move [to the SEC] was ever contemplated or made, at least. I want to serve my role and serve others to help make this transition be as successful as it can and get it headed in an upward trajectory and we’ll see how it goes from there. … I'm not ready to start making any plans yet. [...] I could see the horizon a little closer than when I got here. But I really want to continue to work through the opportunities that we have to be successful in the short term and position us for greatness in the long run. There are a number of things we want to achieve. Then maybe there’ll be a time when I decide it’s best to hand it over to someone else.” (link)

The Tulsa World’s Haisten says Tulsa AD Dickson will “surely” plan for his second retirement from the Golden Hurricane to be in the spring of next year & that the first call to succeed Dickson should be Oral Roberts AD Johnson. Haisten: “The Oral Roberts University people will want to strangle me for this, but (Tulsa President) Carson’s first call should be to a young administrator who’s been a ball of difference-making fire for the Golden Eagle athletic department.” Dickson provides Haisten with a leadership profile needed at Tulsa: “It can’t be a rookie pilot. It has to be someone who knows the industry and what’s happening in the industry. Someone with some wherewithal in the industry, because of how much our industry has changed. You’re going to have to fight for your place. You have to know how to compete in this race (against schools) that have much bigger engines. [...] You can’t delegate that here. You have to embrace that part of it. The next person has to be wired that way.” (link)

USA Today’s Berkowitz has the latest filing in the House-Prince antitrust case as the NCAA says plaintiff attorneys are seeking $1.4B in damages with this key piece of additional info: “The filings did not specify whether that figure takes into account the tripling of damages awards that occurs in successful antitrust cases. If it does not, then more than $4.2 billion could be at stake in the case.” Further per the filing, notable media consultant Desser provided expert testimony that the “value of the use of athletes' NIL in college sports TV contracts is 10% of the total broadcast revenue for each conference,” as well as, “the dollar amount connected to that percentage in a multi-sport media deal, 75% can be attributed to football, 15% to men's basketball and 5% to women's basketball, 5% to Olympic sports.” The NCAA provided a chart that illustrates how the payouts would have looked in 2021 in the Power 5 leagues with football student-athletes earning $26,000 to $42,500 per person, men’s basketball student-athletes ranging from $55,000 to $77,400 & women’s basketball student-athletes from $6,800 to $14,100. Connecticut Senator Murphy, who has been vocal & proactive on a number of college athletics issues, tweets on the turnover of Colorado’s football roster: “The NCAA says players aren't employees except for their coaches all treat the players like employees. Sanders is in the process of firing half his team, kicking them off their scholarships because they aren't performing. That's employment.” (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker sits down with Montana Senior Assoc. AD for Student Affairs and Compliance/SWA/DI Football Oversight Committee's Comprehensive Recruiting Review Subgroup Chair Gee, who provides some insights on the new football recruiting model. Gee goes into detail about the move to earlier recruiting activity, conversations that happened regarding the months of December and January, whether recruiting shutdown periods were considered and lots more. Asked about misconceptions regarding the model and the process that led to it, Gee explains: “We really didn’t do our work in a vacuum. We’re not going to legislate by survey. That’s the one thing that I have heard as a concern is ‘are we going to legislate by survey’, and we absolutely are not.” Gee also says the spring contact period received the most mixed feedback, especially from coaches, “so we’ll start to explore that, and we’ll really have to monitor how this basically a year from now goes as far as changing that time frame from an evaluation to a contact period. I assured coaches that we would look at that because they’re nervous about that, and I don’t blame them.” Full Q&A now on Connect. (link)

New Mexico Governor Grisham wants legislators to help her enact a new anti-hazing law, partly in response to allegations by former New Mexico State men’s basketball student-athletes that they were sexually assaulted by teammates and that coaches and staff failed to respond. Grisham believes it should be “unequivocal in state law that hazing is a crime and those who do harm to others will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.” (link)

LSU women’s basketball student-athletes Johnson and Reese joined Breakfast Club Sports’ We Need To Talk podcast. When asked if they want to play in the WNBA, Reese: “I want to play in the WNBA, but I know I have a career outside of it. I’m not in a rush, trust me she and I are just chillin right now. I want to win as many championships at LSU and do as much as I can at LSU.” Johnson adds, “I think that should put the WNBA on notice. Y’all gotta start gettin right. We’re in college right now getting charter flights, free food, NIL. Give me something to want. ” Reese: “Fo sho. One hundo.” (link)

Multiple WNBA agents tell The Athletic’s Pickman that only five to 10 players earn $500K or more playing overseas in a given season, and that is when Russia and China, two countries where pay is the highest, are fully accessible to players. Further complicating matters are the conversion rates among currencies and the cost of living differences from city to city. Going into this season with a “diminished overseas landscape, fewer teams were bidding on some of the world’s top talent so the market generally shrunk,” Pickman continues, noting that leads to questions about what it would take for WNBA players to remain in the U.S. during the offseason. One agent says it goes beyond higher wages. “There’s so many other things that have to happen for people to stay. It’s not just a financial choice.” (link)

The WNBA is projected to bring in between $180M and $200M in combined league and team revenue this year, up from about $102M in 2019, according to Bloomberg’s Haque, who notes that “players won’t see any of that extra bounty” and explains that salaries as a share of total revenue actually shrank to around 9.3% in FY22 from 11.1% in FY19. Haque, who notes that “U.S. professional basketball lays claim to one of the biggest gender pay gaps in sports,” observes that “much of the women players’ problem lies with a collective bargaining agreement struck in January 2020. The contract, which runs through 2027, has an option that allows either side — the league or the players’ union — to abandon the agreement in about 18 months, or at the end of the 2024 season. The union is expected to exercise the option.” As it stands, the WNBA must see 20% revenue growth every year, among other goals, before a revenue sharing component is triggered, and Haque points out the league will likely need another $30M in sales beyond its current estimates to trigger sharing. Lots more. (link)
