Georgia will reopen Stegeman Coliseum in time for the 2023-24 hoops season. The arena has been closed since March 2, 2023, when a small piece of ceiling material was found on the floor. Outside firm Walter P. Moore, found “no indication” of structural deficiencies; however, The Athletic’s Emerson reports a “root cause could be the center-hung scoreboard and/or heating and cooling system, which were installed in spring 2017. The first piece of roof material fell in spring 2018, the next in fall 2020,” and the next in March of this year, prompting Stegeman’s closure. While repairs are made, the UGA volleyball team will be temporarily relocated to Ramsey Center, which served as the team’s home from 1995-2017. (link, link)

Kansas State is exploring ways to incorporate lavender into its uniforms more frequently amid increasing demand from fans. Wildcats AD Taylor: “It’s really about what we can create and put on our trainers that our fans love and want to buy. Then we can put that on the retail side. We’ve seen other colors become popular in the past like charcoal and white, but nothing like lavender right now. We’re open to using it on anything that gets people to say, ‘Oh, I really want that.’ … Our goal is to make sure our products get to retail as quickly as possible. We struggle a bit with that because there are two different groups we work with at Nike and that’s one of the things which we will tell them about when we visit them.” More. (link)

The Oklahoma House and Senate have both approved a change to the state's NIL law, USA Today’s Berkowitz reports, noting that the bill says a “college athletic association (read: NCAA) ‘shall not prohibit a postsecondary institution from identifying, facilitating, enabling, or supporting opportunities for a student athlete to earn compensation for the student athlete’s name, image, or likeness activities.’” The law also states it should not be construed as recognizing student-athletes as employees and that all relationships between student-athletes and agents should be in writing, clearly describe the obligations of both parties and outline fees for the professional representation. The bill now awaits Governor Stitt’s signature. (link)

Booker: "Education's been at the forefront of when we launched the Jayhawks Ascend program; not just the internal education for our student-athletes but how can we make that connection to campus? We have so many great resources... What are ways that we can get our other school programs involved in NIL?" Garcia Cichosz also speaks with KU QB Daniels: "We're still trying to find out how we're able to connect with these businesses outside of the community, what if we wanted to be able to talk to these big companies... Even if it's not the biggest NIL deal, we want to be able to connect with these businesses that we feel are true to us." Full conversation over on Connect. (link)

Kansas and LSU have completed their hearings before the Independent Resolution Panel, as Sports Illustrated’s Forde cites sources who say KU went before the IRP for three days last weekend while LSU’s hearing was in February. “If timelines from previous cases hold, with roughly four months between hearing and ruling, LSU’s case could wrap in late spring or early summer, while Kansas’ could conclude by late summer. … The Tigers and Jayhawks can hope that the Independent Resolution Panel’s history of light penalties is maintained. Both schools face potential postseason bans, but the IRP did not apply that penalty in any of its previous four cases. Furthermore, it handed down no major sanctions to the head coaches of the involved schools.” (link)

Meanwhile, former Kansas men’s basketball student-athlete Preston tells ESPN’s Lavigne he believes the KU staff had knowledge of payments made by Adidas representatives to his mother. In response to KU’s assertion that it was a “victim” of the crimes committed by Adidas representatives Gassnola and Gatto, Preston says: They ain’t no victim; they knew what was going on, too. They put the whole thing together. They set it up. Like, KU was the whole reason we even met.” Preston’s mother, Nicole Player, adds: “If anybody was a victim it was the family that Adidas preyed on. We left the school and weathered the storm and never one time did I come out and say we’re victims. When the reality is, if anybody is a victim here, we’re victims of a corrupt system. We’re a victim of college corruption, corruption that has gone on for decades before us and will continue to go on decades after us.” Asked plainly if KU “knew that Gassnola was giving your mom or giving other people money,” Preston responded: “Yeah, yeah,” repeating the word “yeah” four more times. “They wasn’t blind to that. They weren’t blind to that at all.” (link, link – full podcast)

Bowl Season Executive Director Carparelli says there will be no new bowl games added for this season, and eligibility for postseason play will continue to be 6-6. Carparelli: “In a word, we don’t like the notion of 5–7 teams participating. That’s not what they are intended for, but we do want to make sure every 6–6 team has a place to go bowling. The hard part is that you don’t know at the beginning of the season how many bowl-eligible teams you’re going to have. Last year, we had one too many. This year, we had one [less than] enough. We are hovering right around the right number. No one is inclined to add any.” (link)

Revenue sharing with players is “inevitable,” according to Penn State Football HC Franklin, who cites the Supreme Court’s 2021 decision regarding the since-dubbed Alston awards, saying: “I think pretty much everybody I talk to is in the camp of, you know, this needs to happen and should have happened for a long time.” Furthermore, the dynamic between players and coaches has changed, and Franklin points out that it’s more like the NFL “in terms of hey, we’re all working together to accomplish something rather than in the old days. It was very much the coach was here and the player was here. And it was my way or the highway. That, for the most part, that’s been gone for a long time.” (link)

As Miami (FL) QB Van Dyke is reportedly considering entering the transfer portal due to a dissatisfaction with the NIL money he’s receiving, LifeWallet CEO/prominent Hurricanes supporter Ruiz says he’s honored all of his commitments to Van Dyke and has not been made aware of the QB’s unhappiness, such as there is any. Ruiz also indicated that recent headlines about his company’s finances will not affect his ability or desire to strike NIL deals. “LifeWallet continues to remain active. The delayed filing was because of a restatement in accounting whereby an entity that owns claims was now consolidated into the LifeWallet financials and had to be reconciled. The restatement as publicly disclosed related only to non-cash items and has no impact on cash. … We continue to do business as usual. Nothing has changed or is changing generally. But as any business, one always looks at how to maximize investments. We have a very good NIL platform.” (link)
