USC Upstate Chancellor Harris joins Connect’s Garcia Cichosz to share his expectations for the next Spartans AD, including how he or she will work with Harris and his staff to market the university to the next generation of potential Spartans, top priorities awaiting the next AD, the type of administrative background that aligns with the university’s needs, whether he prefers a sitting/former AD or is open to bringing in someone taking the chair for the first time and lots more. Ultimately, Harris explains: “We want winners, we want people who want to win. Not just be mediocre and maintain, I'm not looking for that. I'm not looking for someone to say, oh I can come do that, it's a smaller institution, they only have about 5,500 students and I can come and maintain that. I'm looking for folks who want us to be exceptional, who want us to be that unicorn, that folks will look at and say, wow I want to be a part of that." Full conversation now live on Connect. (link)

Connecticut is removing the court at Gampel Pavilion, which has been there since the building opened in 1990, to make way for a new one, and The NewsTimes’ Butterfield reports UConn officials are “expected to identify points of interest on the court — where, say, Sue Bird hit her pull-up jump to beat Notre Dame in 2001 — and provide a grid to the removal crew. So each section will be preserved and cut up for auction.” Trustees last year earmarked roughly $688K in funding for a new floor. Huskies AD Benedict: “When you find someone who has a lot of resources and has an emotional connection to something, that’s when you use the word priceless. We’re going to have people who look at this stuff saying, ‘That’s priceless to me.’ This can be what we refer to as a win-win situation. We’re going to try to generate as much money as we can to help pay for the new floor, and provide opportunities to our fans to have a piece of UConn basketball history. Which is great for both.” (link)

Le Moyne AD Beretta is a “huge proponent” of hockey and says the department will take a hard look at adding men’s and women’s programs as it transitions to DI. “I come from a hockey background at (Army). I was the executive chair of the Atlantic Hockey committee for several years. I sat a term on the NCAA rules committee. I’m a huge hockey person. If we had a rink that was on-campus, it would be a no-brainer. … There have been discussions about some development that might take place here in the area that would make it an absolute slam dunk for us.” Beretta and President LeMura have also identified women’s bowling, field hockey and men’s volleyball as potential additions, though football is not on the Dolphins’ radar. (link)

More on Le Moyne’s move to the NEC as Extra Points purveyor Brown notes: “There are a few other DII schools that I know of that are considering reclassification if the timing *and* conference invitations are right. Most of those schools are in the Southeast. Think ASUN/Big South/OVC/MEAC type schools.” (link)

Could Notre Dame be wearing Lululemon jerseys in 2025? The Athletic’s Staples adds some context to the Fighting Irish’s search for a new apparel partner, pointing out that as Under Armour has been deliberate about reducing its spend on such deals, and “because of Notre Dame’s reach, you’ll probably see the best offers Adidas and Nike — or Jordan Brand, depending on which division of the company is in the running — can make.” Staples, though, believes this could be a moment for an athletic department to “consider a slightly different arrangement designed with the name, image and likeness era in mind. … Some smart athletic department is going to become the first that allows players to bring their own shoe deals. This could be especially helpful in basketball, but a possible first-round pick in football could command serious money, too. A third bidder also could drive up the price no matter what kind of deal the Irish make.” More. (link)

+ The Des Moines Register’s Leistikow points out that if it is the case that student-athletes at Iowa and Iowa State violated the NCAA’s rules on sports betting, their reinstatements could depend on, among other things, how much they bet. For wagering $25 or less, the student-athletes would lose no eligibility. For $26 to $100, the student-athletes would forfeit 10% of their season. That figure increases 20% for wagers of $101 to $300, 50% for wagers of $301 to $500, and student-athletes risk the permanent loss of eligibility for bets above $500, with “sit a season/charge-a-season penalties recommended,” per Leistikow. (link)
+ The Texas House of Representatives secured 101 votes, one more than the 100 it needed to pass a bill that would legalize sports gambling; however, the Texas Senate “might not even vote” on the resolution, according to the Austin American-Statesman’s Autullo, who notes Lt. Governor Patrick remarked earlier this year that the chamber lacks support to even schedule a committee hearing. If it does happen to pass, the measure would be added to the ballot as a constitutional amendment in the November election. (link)

+ New Mexico has extended the contract of Women’s Basketball HC Bradbury through the 2027-28 season. Key notes: “Bradbury will complete the terms of his previous contract, which was scheduled to pay him a base salary of $275,000 next season increasing to $280,000 in 2024-25. The extension will extend the $280,000 salary for three more seasons through 2027-28. + D1Baseball’s Etheridge catches up with Alabama Baseball Interim HC Jackson to discuss the role into which he has been thrust, and Jackson explains the “big deal for me was to try to keep everything business as usual. We have an older group that knows how to prepare and how to play. We know what they’re made of and what their character is. Now some other people can recognize just what kind of group they are.” As the Crimson Tide looks to potentially earn a spot hosting in the NCAA Tournament, Jackson says the team will continue to emphasize bringing the energy for midweek games the way it has all season. “Those SEC weekends can take a lot of you. You have Monday to kind of recover and pop right back out there Tuesday to play some great teams. Like tonight, Troy’s got a great ballclub. You really have to bring it. Our older, mature ballclub has done a great job of that.” (link)
+ Former Washington State Football HC Rolovich was in court yesterday to ask U.S. District Judge Rice to allow his lawsuit against the university to move forward. Zach Pekelis, an attorney for the university and Cougars AD Chun, argued that Rolovich’s reasons for refusing the COVID vaccine “kind of shifted over time” and accused Rolovich of employing “pseudo-scientific skepticism” in his opposition to the mandate. Rolovich’s attorney contended the former coach’s religious beliefs were found to be credible following a double-blind review by the WSU HR department. (link)

For the first time, the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships for DI, DII and DIII will all be held at the USTA’s National Tennis Campus in Lake Nona, and USTA President/Board Chair and NCAA CMO Hainline adds that bringing all divisions together is “something tennis has done probably better than any other sport. You look at the U.S. Open and the other three Grand Slams and the 1,000 level events at the ATP and WTA, and it’s sort of a statement about sport and equal access. It’s wonderful to bring that to the collegiate level.” NCAA SVP of Championships Comstock says she could see Lake Nona being part of a rotation to host the event, adding: “I don’t see that it would be something we would do every year and the USTA will probably not want to undertake this every year, but we could certainly revisit this with potentially some kind of a schedule if our membership wanted to come down and do this on some kind of a schedule.” (link)

In a Q&A with The Pantagraph, Illinois State Interim AD Beggs says she’s being told it will take “about six months to get the next athletics director onto our campus” and says while she’s in the position she would like to use her experience in strategic planning, brand management and fundraising to the department’s advantage. Beggs, who had already turned in her retirement paperwork, goes on to say she doesn’t have any interest in the full-time post and is unsure of what role she will play in selecting the next AD. “Obviously, our president is an interim, so he was not here when we did this search the last time. So we’re getting lots of good advice from the (Missouri Valley) conference office and others who are knowledgeable about searches in the athletics world, and we’ll be moving forward with that as soon as we’ve made that plan.” More Beggs: “I don’t think you can have that kind of information out in the public eye without having some impact, some effect. We’ve been pleasantly surprised at how many of our donors are still saying they are here to support us and they just want to turn the page and get back.” Full interview. (link)

West Virginia AD Baker during a talk with local high school students addressed Men’s Basketball HC Huggins’ recent homophobic remarks: “As an athletic director, every night I go to bed over a thousand dormant volcanoes, you never know which one is going to erupt. When you have a couple hundred employees, and several hundred student athletes, people are going to make mistakes. It’s not my first rodeo in that regard, and I’m glad we were able to find resolution on this one.” Baker also talked about the interview process at WVU, explaining that he just wanted to be himself. “I have always interviewed better when I didn’t feel pressure. I’ve got Jordans on right now, and I think I wore Jordans that day, if they were going to hire me I wanted them to know who I am. But it went well.” (link)

Clemson AD Neff says the revenue distribution model will be a “big topic with a lot of prep work” leading into next week’s spring meetings and explains the timing of his comments on the matter earlier this year were by design to “give light to such an important topic within the ACC and just to not hide behind that. Just be very direct with it. Our commissioner’s rather direct with it, and at Clemson, we’re going to continue to be direct with it because of the priority on our campus, within the ACC and within our supporters and community. … There’s a realization, again, amongst the whole membership, that the economics of the landscape continue to change. We’ve got to make sure we do what we need to do to compete.” (link)

+ Amid questions over whether the NCAA should modernize its gambling rules as they relate to student-athletes, ACC Commissioner Phillips tells the AP’s Russo it would be a “major mistake to change NCAA rules regarding gambling if it negatively impacts the integrity of games,” and Tulane AD Dannen adds: “The fact that it’s legal doesn’t mean it should be acceptable if you are a student-athlete. … Because there is a scandal or two should we change the rules to permit what is currently scandalous? That doesn’t seem to be the right reason to change a rule.” Mountain West Commissioner Nevarez is similarly unmoved, remarking: “I would side on continuing to have very strict and punitive NCAA bylaws. Because what is the upside to allowing sports wagering? Go bet the ponies. Go play blackjack.” (link)
+ Meanwhile, RealResponse and U.S. Integrity are partnering to establish the Athlete Alert Powered by RealResponse, a tipline for anonymously reporting gambling issues, including physical threats, harm, and/or emotional abuse from fans. It also provides an anonymous way for individuals to report “corruption and integrity-related concerns such as the misuse of insider information, match-fixing, game manipulation, and/or illegal wagering.” (link)

INFLCR CEO Cavale calls the partnership a “natural fit,” adding: “When it comes to NIL, group licensing is still one of the biggest opportunities of the future. There’s so much value to unlock for groups of athletes, whether you break them down by team, by school, by conference … So, somebody coming in helping organize those athletes and unlocking the value that’s possible for them when they’re a part of the group, that’s going to continue to be a really big need. Teamworks and INFLCR coming together with Brandr are going to fulfill that.” (link)

Cincinnati has unveiled the details of its $134M indoor practice facility, on which the Bearcats will break ground later this month. The project will feature an 84K-sq-ft, climate-controlled practice facility with a full-length football field that is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2024 football season and can be used by other athletics programs. It will also include an adjacent 96K-sq-ft performance center, including football offices, performance nutrition stations, a dining hall, weight and athletic training rooms and mental health services. The performance center is slated to be completed prior to the 2025 football season, according to The Athletic’s Williams. (link)

Former St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Anderson is seeking $45.6M from the school, claiming he was let go with cause in March only so the school could avoid paying his buyout and use the money to hire current HC Pitino, ESPN’s Medcalf reports. According to a notice of intention to arbitrate filed by Anderson’s attorney last month, Anderson is seeking the $11.4M that was left on his contract as well as $34.2M in punitive damages. According to his termination letter, Anderson was relieved of his duties for “failure to create and support an environment that strongly encourages student-athletes who are in the men's basketball program to meet all university academic requirements," "failure to perform your duties and responsibilities in a manner that reflected positively on St. John's University…in actions [that] brought serious discredit" to the school and "failure to appropriately supervise and communicate with your assistant coaches." Oklahoma State business professor Holden comments on Missouri’s newly amended NIL law, pointing out that Missouri is “the first state that I’m aware of to basically implement that you’re allowed to use NIL for recruiting. … To me, this is interesting that after Charlie Baker’s latest efforts on Capitol Hill states are still pushing back. I think this is really setting up a showdown between the states and the NCAA. The NCAA is putting a lot, if not all, of its eggs in the Congress will pre-empt state laws basket. I don’t know if there is enough political will to get that done, especially as we get closer to the 2024 election cycle.” (link)

Money was the main topic at last week’s National Football Operations Organization’s meetings, according to FootballScoop’s Brice and Barnett, who point out that “in 2020, college football teams were some of the only groups traveling, and their treatment on the road reflected that. One Group of 5 DFO recalled the Atlanta Hyatt was so grateful to have their business that the staff lined the halls and clapped for the team as they left the hotel. Two-plus years later, the moment is gone and prices have reflected that: a hotel that was $99 a room and $54 a meal is now $200 a room and $100 a meal. Two-night minimums are now common.” Given the new financial reality, DFOs are looking for ways to economize, and Barnett and Brice note that “many teams have responded by staying further away from their destination. One Big 12 team visiting Baylor this season will stay in Temple, Texas, 35 miles south of Waco, for instance.” The DFOs also discussed best practices in response to shrinking or vanishing police presences in metro areas due to post-COVID economics. “One Group of 5 team visiting a major metro this September has shelled out $4,000 for private security to escort the team for their upcoming visit.” Lots more.
