#9: From the Omaha World-Herald: “Five days after he last served as Nebraska football’s interim coach, Mickey Joseph was arrested Wednesday afternoon and booked into Lancaster County Jail on charges of strangulation and third-degree domestic assault, according to a press release from the Lincoln Police Department.” The university has placed him on administrative leave. #8: The smiling faces of the cheerleaders breaking up the fist fight make it hard to tell if Wilbur the Wildcat and Sparky the Sun Devil were really brawling or just having fun on the sideline of Saturday's Territorial Cup between Arizona and Arizona State. Some serious haymakers were traded. (link)

#7: Former Georgia Tech FB HC Johnson also with some choice words, his on successor Collins, who led the Yellow Jackets for three-plus seasons: “We didn’t spend a lot of time on uniforms and swag. We worked on trying to play hard-nosed, tough football and be blue collar. [...] He acted like for 11 years we never played football. And I would contend that, if you go back and look, over a 10-year period other than (Bobby) Dodd, we probably accomplished more than anybody there. And not so much for me, but for those kids who played. [...] I think we’ll match our results against his.” (link)

#6: In the inexact world of hiring head coaches, Tennessee AD White has a pretty solid resume of success, which includes current Vols FB HC Heupel (twice: while at UT & while at UCF), current Kansas FB HC Leipold (while at Buffalo), current Alabama MBB HC Oats (while at Buffalo), current Arizona State MBB HC Hurley (while at Buffalo) & former Nebraska FB HC Frost (while at UCF). The Athletic’s Staples breaks down White’s hiring methodology: 1) Take the pulse of the team (White: “I’m not going to a bunch of college kids and saying, ‘Tell me who you want.’ It’s, ‘From your perspective, help me understand what’s going on.’”); 2) It helps if a good coach was a good player (“I think it’s easier for the people who have walked in their shoes to connect with them.”); 3) Understand what kind of coach you need given the circumstances; 4) Year 1 matters, you better pick a coach who has success fast (“People talk about winning the press conference. I talk about winning Year 1 more than winning the press conference.”); and, 5) Trust your gut, even if it makes you uncomfortable. Lots here. (link)

#5: Tension during Saturday's Syracuse-Bryant MBB matchup as multiple coaches & student-athletes were ejected for their involvement in an on-court scuffle. Afterwards, Orange HC Boeheim on Bulldogs HC Grasso: “He gave me a sarcastic apology, which fits him.” More. (link, link, link)

#4: Ohio State President Johnson announces her resignation. The move comes “following an investigation conducted by an outside firm into concerns about her that were raised by staff,” according to The Columbus Dispatch. She will serve the rest of the academic year. In May of 2022, Johnson was selected to represent the Big Ten on the CFP’s Board of Managers. No word on when or who will take over that assignment. #3: The Women’s Basketball Las Vegas Invitational, which was held at The Mirage & featured the likes of Indiana, Memphis & Auburn, gets wholly negative reviews after there was no medical staff onsite Saturday when an Auburn student-athlete hit her head on the floor, delaying the game 50 minutes before paramedics arrived. Further, there were no bleachers setup, only a collection of standard hotel convention chairs littering the perimeter of the court. Hoosiers HC Moren: “This is not what was described to us as far as what the venue was going to look like, what the setup was going to look like. What was disappointing was the aesthetics; it's not a fan-friendly environment. As women's basketball coaches, we're trying to move our game forward. It felt like because [this] got so many ticks on social, that we had taken a couple steps backwards.” Destination Basketball organized the event. Site coordinator Polk: “The court and the lighting, that stuff hasn't been an issue. But we needed to have full-on bleachers. We have notified The Mirage we won't be coming back again. This is a one-time disaster in terms of events. It definitely did not go the way we thought or planned. We just severely missed the mark when it comes to the spectator side.” (link, link)

#2: Arkansas MBB HC Musselman in the post-game presser following the Razorbacks win over San Diego State on Wednesday night in the Maui Invitational: “There was just an Aztec fan that came down and said some things. There were words exchanged.” The tournament’s statement on the little scuffle: “There was an isolated incident following the game this evening. Security acted quickly and appropriately to immediately remove those involved from the arena.” The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Zeigler recaps: “As Musselman was pulled away by his staff, he flashed an ‘L’ with his fingers on his forehead – the sign for loser – and, according to multiple witnesses, screamed, ‘Go (expletive) yourself.’ He also appeared to have an exchange with SDSU guard Matt Bradley, who knocked over a chair in anger. Soon, fans – including at least one parent of an SDSU player – spilled out of the stands onto the court and moved toward the Arkansas coaches as security ushered them to their locker room.” Video footage included at the bottom of the article. No arrests have been reported. (link)

#1: Sportico & WME’s Lattinville update on the largest Power 5 AD payouts around the nation with Texas’ Del Conte leading the pack at $13.3M if the Longhorns were to make a move without cause. The rest of the top five includes Texas Tech’s Hocutt at $11.3M, Alabama’s Byrne at $9.8M, Virginia Tech’s Babcock at $7.5M & Minnesota’s Coyle at $7.3M. Del Conte also has the highest buyout should he initiate an exit for another AD chair at $10.7M, followed by Coyle at $7.3M, Penn State’s Kraft at $5.1M, Byrne at $3M & Hocutt at $2.8M. Lowest payout noted is Virginia’s Williams at $2.7M. As for smallest buyouts, a handful of ADs wouldn’t owe a thing, including Williams, North Carolina’s Cunningham, Oklahoma’s Castiglione, Iowa State’s Pollard, LSU’s Woodward and Oregon’s Mullens. Lattinville: “The industry of college athletics has recently undergone so many material changes that those individuals who possess the necessary skills, experience and character to be a successful AD are just as rare as elite-level coaches.” Lots more behind the paywall.
