More from NCAA President Baker during yesterday’s LEAD1 spring meeting, during which he said he expects decisions regarding the future of the women’s basketball tournament to be made by the end of December, adding: “It’s a giant opportunity, and we better not blow it.” Meanwhile, Big East Commissioner Ackerman says conference commissioners received an update from Endeavor last week and believes multiple networks will have interest in the tournament’s media rights. Regarding the Kaplan Report’s estimation that the WBB tourney could be worth $81M to $112M, Ackerman remarks that those are good numbers “to me. If it’s even half of that, that’s still a nice number. That’s real money. … I have not seen women’s basketball at quite this zenith before now.” (link, link)

On the topic of a new national study on sports gambling, the NCAA tells On3’s Prisbell that President Baker “initiated a new survey to gather the latest data as quickly as possible” but when asked about specifics, the association noted that research being conducted is “general polling” of 18- to 22-year-old college students regarding their gambling behaviors and is not polling confined only to student-athletes.” Asked for a timetable of when the survey might be complete, the NCAA spokesperson told Prisbell: “We will provide more information at a later date.” (link)

Big 12 VP of Men’s Basketball Williams tells the Houston Roundball Review’s Gardner the league is looking into playing a preseason conference tipoff “where some of our teams that only play each other once in the conference will match up and do something then play four or five games where we kind of tip off the year and show some of our talent early on and give our teams a chance to make up that SEC game that would’ve been a Tier 1-Tier 2 game…but it won’t count toward their conference standing.” Right now, the league is considering hosting the games the first week of November at neutral sites. Tarleton is adding beach volleyball and will compete as an affiliate member of Conference USA beginning in the fall. Texans AD Reisman: “This has been a topic of conversation for our university for a long time and we're excited to finally make it happen. … This is another incredible opportunity to provide competitive athletics and opportunities for our female student-athletes to earn their education while competing for the purple and white." There’s also a $30K opportunity for competitive markers & for certain finishes in the Big Sky’s President’s Cup. Payout terms (if without cause): 40% of the remaining base in a lump sum with the other 60% paid out in monthly installments. (link)

Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Hurley aims to ensure the Huskies’ national title “isn’t merely a brief visit back to relevance,” as The Athletic’s O’Neil puts it. Hurley says he will continue to support NIL while building a roster of players who want to be Huskies. “I don’t want to lose a player because of it, but I also don’t want it to be that a player comes here because they heard about our NIL. To me, it’s more about retention.’’ Meanwhile, Huskies AD Benedict is optimistic a partnership with Oak View Group will yield positive results concerning a potential $100M in upgrades to the XL Center. “We absolutely look forward to hearing more about plans to renovate XL. We also need to turn our attention to Gampel. It’s just more difficult for us to make those types of investments when you’re playing in two venues. It does spread you thin.’’ (link)

More on the ESPN layoffs from the New York Post’s Marchand, who reports ESPN+ EVP/GM Wolff has also been let go. Marchand also notes Chris Fowler signed a nine-year contract in 2014 worth $35M. Fowler, as reported, is staying with the network, and Marchand removed language suggesting his new deal represented a “slight” raise over the nine-year extension. (link, link)

The Athletic’s Ubben is skeptical the SEC’s plan to curb field-stormings is going to work, acknowledging that while the threat for a tragedy is real, “academic evidence shows that harsher penalties like this working group proposes do little to nothing to disincentivize undesired behaviors. … If schools guaranteed that every fan who entered the field would be arrested and prosecuted and backed it up with results, storming the field would disappear. But it occurs, in part, because of emotion and the realization that fans know they can’t punish them all. [...] Trying to discourage storming the field is the right move, but in a sport driven by emotion and euphoric moments, it might be an impossible task.” (link)

Incoming Alabama men’s basketball student-athlete Walton was arrested in Tuscaloosa and charged with second-degree possession of marijuana. During the arrest, officers found three loaded guns in the car in which Walton was a passenger. Walton reportedly informed police about the firearm under his seat. Crimson Tide HC Oats has since stated that Walton, who had announced he would transfer from Wichita State, is no longer being recruited and will not be a member of the team. (link)

Speaking during today’s LEAD1 annual spring meeting, NCAA President Baker explained he hasn’t spoken with many student-athletes who want to be employees, “and there are a lot of really good reasons for that. Obviously, there’s a lot of traffic in the courts at this point about this issue these days, which is going to limit what I would choose to say about it. But I think student-athletes want to be student-athletes, and it’s up to us to figure out how to make that work for them in a variety of environments and in circumstances that are different.” Baker also addressed recent state laws aimed at curtailing the NCAA’s ability to enforce NIL activities, saying: “That does make, in some respects, the idea of creating additional framework through federal legislation stronger than it would be otherwise. Because we have evidence it’s going to be hard to do this on a voluntary basis.” Additionally, Baker commented on collectives being affiliated with athletic departments, pointing out that depending on the definition of “affiliated,” it’s likely those collectives would have to spend an equal amount on men and women to be compliant with Title IX. “So I view all of those as legitimate issues that would have to be dealt with (by Congress) … I think at a minimum, and this came up in the survey work that (athletic directors) did, might have been one of the highest scores of all, which was that there does need to be a framework or regulatory model around collectives to begin with.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake recounts the events that led to Oregon State AD Barnes’ hospitalization, noting the proximity to the hospital and the quick response time from paramedics were both fortuitous events; however, it was the presence of Dr. Danielle Campagne that might have proved most crucial. Campagne, the interim chief of emergency medicine at UCSF Fresno, spent two decades as a physician with Community Regional Medical Center, the only Level 1 trauma center between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and one attendee tells Canzano: “What an incredible circumstance when someone has a heart attack and an emergency physician is sitting just feet away.” For her part, Campagne says she was simply doing her job. “My colleagues and I are honored to have been there to provide emergency medical care. This is what we do as emergency-medicine physicians.” (link)

Stony Brook AD Heilbron continues to work without a contract after his three-year extension, signed in 2019, expired in 2022. The Statesman’s Anderson points out that not having a contract doesn’t mean President McInnis is preparing to remove him from the post, as SBU employees work under “union guidelines, which protects them from abrupt firings. If the institution wants to get rid of a contracted employee, it must issue them a notice of non-renewal at least one year before their contract expires.” Heilbron says he’s spoken with McInnis about moving forward, and “I feel very confident in how we’re proceeding. It’s something that we’ve discussed. She’s been incredibly supportive of me and our department so honestly, I’m not overly concerned about it.” (link)

The SEC is considering a policy change whereby teams could potentially lose a home game after a field-storming incident, Sports Illustrated’s Forde reports. The working group created by Commissioner Sankey and led by Kentucky AD Barnhart, Alabama AD Byrne and Georgia AD Brooks is considering several proposals to stop fans from rushing the field, including – though not likely to be adopted, according to Forde – the forfeiture of a game in which the field is rushed. Sankey last week remarked: “The fact that field-rushing still happens means that the fine structure hasn't solved all of our problems. I would expect some level of updates as we go into the year ahead, one of which is a higher expectation for security around the visiting team when those field incursions take place.” For better or worse, one conference administrator tells Forde that losing a home game would “only have to happen once” to scare the rest of the league straight. That time will come, though, and Marchand notes that when it does, the network “will tighten its belt for those making more than seven figures, but with a particular fine eye for those in the $2M-$5M per year range, according to sources.” In a memo to employees, ESPN Chairman Pitaro wrote that “we will have another wave of notifications that will be completed by the start of the summer for those that are not in front-facing talent roles.” The first name to emerge as part of the first round has been VP of Communications Soltys, who began with the network at its inception in 1979. The NCAA last conducted a “self-described national study” on sports gambling done by student-athletes in 2003, On3’s Prisbell reports, noting the NCAA has conducted what it calls surveys every four years since then. ECU criminal justice professor Malkin subsequently asserts the time is now to conduct another national study. “It is essential. We need to know how much they’re engaging in gambling behavior. We need to know what percent are at risk for gambling disorder. We need to know what the effect is, in terms of the differences between athletes in states where it’s legal and in states where it’s not. We need to know how well our student-athletes understand NCAA regulations around gambling. … It takes a couple of years for something to be available to possibly see its effect. And now is the time. Right now.” (link)

Extra Points’ Brown examines whether a mid-major baseball program can win another College World Series, a la Coastal Carolina in 2016 & Fresno State in 2008. Chanticleers AD Hogue is quick to point out that the term “mid-major” doesn’t accurately depict the CCU baseball program as Brown subsequently notes the Sun Belt is, in fact, one of the five or six best leagues in the country and is “indisputably” better than the Big Ten. Furthermore, being rich and powerful is less important in baseball than it is in football, and CCU Baseball HC Gilmore says analytics and offseason player development play a big role in the team’s success. However, that is becoming increasingly difficult in the NIL era, as Gilmore tells Brown: “One of the hardest things is when we get them here in the summer, and they aren’t fully funded, so they’re digging into their pocket a bit.” Both Hogue and Southern Miss AD McClain acknowledge that increasing budgets and NIL may make it more difficult to Sun Belt teams to out-scout them but do not concede that it’s a given. While McClain notes his program beats out Ole Miss and Mississippi State for prospective student-athletes sometimes, Gilmore says the Chanticleers have had success recruiting players who weren’t on anyone else’s radar. The challenge now will be to hang onto them. More. (link)

SBJ’s Smith profiles Taymar Sales U. Founder/CEO Dyer’s flat-fee approach to ticketing sales, which differs from the revenue-sharing model he helped create at IMG. In fact, before signing Kentucky as its first collegiate client, the Wildcats declined Taymar’s pitch, which had been based on the IMG model. When he returned with the flat-fee pitch, UK agreed, which opened the door to other schools, including LSU, Michigan State and Connecticut. Dyer: “It can be scary starting a business from scratch. But I was pretty confident that we had something new for the market. Now, we don’t make nearly as much money per school as we did back in the glory days at IMG, but I guess you could say that we’re the turtle in the turtle and rabbit race. … I just felt like there was a place for an owner-operator to go it alone. When I started Taymar, I was almost 60 and I’d had enough of working for other people. I didn’t love the private-equity approach in college athletics. I just felt like there was room for a new model.” (link)

The Athletic’s Kahler examines how NIL and the transfer portal has led to what one NFL agent calls an “anemic” QB class depth-wise. Among the most high-profile QBs whom Senior Bowl Director Nagy wiped off his whiteboard last year was Oregon’s Nix, who returned to Eugene despite losing several key pieces on offense. While Nix’s NIL deal with the Ducks hasn’t been disclosed, attorney Caspino, who specializes in NIL deals and represents several QBs who returned to school, says: “For a second-tier QB who the school really wants, it’s a seven-figure situation, that’s for sure. It’s seven figures, but depending on the size of the program and the need, because the value for NIL, it’s an equation: level of talent (multiplied by) need of the program.” Meanwhile, one West Coast collective administrator says collectives are planning ahead, and says their collective is building a QB fund of $200K-$500K, “essentially slotting a free-agent quarterback position and delegating funds for whenever that happens.” More. As Texas A&M men’s golfer Bennett prepares to turn pro after this year’s NCAA Tournament, ProMondo CEO Bollero, who serves as Bennett’s NIL agent, says the “opportunity cost of playing in The Masters far outweighed the potential earnings from that week, particularly in interest from big companies. … We’ve been building relationships that could open the door to fuller deals once he turns, but we can’t negotiate any of that until he’s done with college.” That said, Sportico’s Gorant notes Bennett appears to be doing just fine on the NIL front as an amateur, having recently added T-Mobile to previously existing deals with Ping, Suncast and Upper Deck. Meanwhile, various firms have popped up to “test the water for a week here and there” and “peek behind the curtain” for potential longer-term deals once Bennett goes pro. (link)
