Congratulations to the Texas volleyball team on capturing its second consecutive national championship. Longhorns HC Jerritt Elliott: “We were really on the struggle bus at 5-3 earlier in the season. Just asked our kids to stay with the process, trust one another, work hard. And when you have good, quality kids that have good values that are very humble and vulnerable, we worked through a lot of ups and downs and tears, a lot of things that we were trying to figure out. But they put the work in to do that. And then magically it came together because they put in that work and they just -- you could just feel it today. They were so prepared. They were on a mission to be able to do this. The confidence they showed from the service line was remarkable on both nights.” (link, link)

Big South Commissioner Sherika Montgomery joins The Add Drop Podcast, laying out her vision for the league, which revolves around two main components: elevating the student-athlete experience and enhancing exposure both regionally and nationally. “And when I think about that, starting with our student-athlete experiences, I ask our staff and our teammates a question before every championship: ‘What are we doing that we've never done before? How can we elevate one thing for our student-athletes from a championship experience?’ We're engaging with our student-athletes, making sure that we hear from them directly. Who better to opine on the student athlete experience than the student athletes themselves? And so that's something we've been very intentional about.” Full interview. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown sat down with Elon AD Jennifer Strawley at the Women Leaders National Convention in New Orleans to dive into Strawley’s taking over the Phoenix athletic department, her perspective on driving and navigating change at a private institution and innovative approaches to addressing financial gaps. Brown and Strawley also discuss the potential of student-athlete revenue sharing and how that impacts all levels of DI. With all the moving parts within the ecosystem right now, Strawley says: “What I really believe is we have to get thought leaders that understand college athletics in higher education, [who] maybe have been at different spaces and can talk honestly about what the challenges are, what the revenues look like, how we can build that, and begin to put minds together to kind of almost start with a blank slate. We just keep trying to fit a round peg in a square hole and think if we tweak this rule or tweak that rule we're going to end up in a better space, and we're just not getting there. So, we have to really get to a place where we're willing to almost just start over on the blank space and build it back to what we wanted.” Lots more now available on Connect. (link)

Hawai’i last week issued a design-build request for proposals for a public-private partnership to replace Aloha Stadium with a more modern facility. Governor Josh Green: “Our college football team, which we know we want to support, we need to be a Division I program. Having a stadium that is befitting of a great state is important.” Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos called the request a “good first step” and added: “I see the progress starting now, I’ve heard a lot about it, but now the progress is starting, it’s real and there’s a lot of steps along the way, but I’m optimistic and we’re all in on this project. … I think now being able to see the look of what the stadium would actually look like and putting them up there and having people actually see it, it kind of makes sense to them and they can kind of see where the plan is going.” The current plan calls for a minimum of 25K seats. More from the New Mexico Bowl as New Mexico State Football HC Jerry Kill insists the Aggies were only allowed to use the facility because New Mexico Bowl Executive Director Jeff Siembieda intervened, and when the Aggies did show up, there were four police officers there to monitor practice, per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. Aggies AD Mario Moccia says an advance team was shown an outdoor field that was to be used for their bowl prep. After contacting a “senior UNM official,” Moccia was reportedly told the Aggies would have access to the indoor facility, but “ultimately, that got worked out. How? I don't know.” New Mexico AD Eddie Nuñez told ESPN on Sunday that UNM permitted the use of its facilities to both teams, just as it has done annually for the bowl game. He said New Mexico "would never stand in the way" of a participating team's preparation. (link)

UCLA Football HC Chip Kelly believes Notre Dame is set up the way all college programs should be: namely, as independents in football and in respective leagues for other sports. “I think we should all be independent in football and you can have a 64-team conference in the Power 5 and you can have a 64-team conference in the Group of 5.” Kelly goes on to explain: "We separate it and we play each other. You can have the West Coast teams and every year we play seven games against the West Coast teams and then we play the East and play Syracuse, Boston College, Pitt, West Virginia, Virginia. Then the next year you play against the South while you still play your seven teams. You can play a seven-game schedule and play four against another division opponent. And you can always play against one Mountain West opponent every year so that we can keep those rivalries going." Kelly also believes that by signing a national TV contract and selling sponsorships there is a pathway to sharing revenue with players. “I think if you went together collectively as a group and said there's 132 teams and we all share the same TV contract…that's a lot of games and there's a lot of people in the TV world that would go through it. You can sponsor each one, instead of calling it Group of 5 and Power 5, you can call it Amazon, Nike, bid that out to things. You can do a lot of things. … And the schools should be paying the players because the players are what the product is and the fact that they don't get paid is really the biggest travesty." (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ North Dakota State has named Wyoming OC Tim Polasek its Football HC. Polasek will not coach the Cowboys in the Arizona Bowl against Toledo on December 30. (link)
+ Grambling State will announce former Nebraska Football Interim HC Mickey Joseph as its next HC. Joseph, who did not coach in 2023, was arrested in November 2022 and charged with felony assault by strangulation or suffocation. The charges were later dropped after the woman who lodged the complaint refused to testify. Joseph previously coached Grambling's wide receivers and special teams in 2014 and 2015 (link)

+ Louisville Men’s Basketball HC Kenny Payne says he has not spoken with Cardinals AD Josh Heird about his job status and does not feel like he is coaching for his job. “I did not feel like that, but I wouldn't feel like that no matter what. I go out and I focus on the team, and the guys. I didn't come here for me. I came here for them and for this community." Payne says he has spoken with Heird about ways to continue improving the program. “We've talked about, 'How do we take this to the next level?' How do we make sure that we are playing in a way that you build momentum, not just within the program but in the community, and so that people are proud about this program?' I believe Josh wants us to be good, he wants us to make this fanbase proud, and I know he wants for the guys to enjoy being here. And I have the same goals.” (link)

The Women’s Basketball Oversight Committee held a video conference earlier this month during which it approved an AQ waiver request from the NEC for the 2024-25 season. After losing two members, the league fell below the minimum number of teams required to maintain an AQ. The Oversight Committee did not support a blanket waiver request from “autonomy institutions” to consider return travel days as a student-athlete’s required day off in certain circumstances. The committee cited concerns expressed by the DI SAAC and the Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete Engagement Group as well as student-athlete wellbeing concerns, noting that the required day off provides student-athletes “clear, planned time away from athletics activities during the playing season to address academic and personal matters.” Additionally, the committee adopted NCAA Division I Proposal No. 2023-48 to specify that during the June evaluation periods, evaluations may be conducted at approved scholastic and intercollegiate events that occur at any location other than the institution. Loyola-Chicago professor Noah Henderson analyzes the impact NIL collectives have on men’s basketball success for Sports Illustrated. Per Henderson’s count, there are 215 DI schools with collectives, which comprises 59.4% of schools with DI men’s hoops programs. Among mid-majors, just 47.8% of programs have established collectives, per Henderson, who notes every school in the KenPom top 50 has a collective. Extending to the top 100 teams, just three schools do not have a collective. Broken down further, 90% of mid-majors ranked in the top 100 have collectives; 74% of all teams ranked between 100-181 have collectives; and 72% of mid-majors ranked between 100 and 181 have collectives. Meanwhile, just 31.5% schools in the bottom half of the rankings (rank 181-362) have collectives. Henderson: “For Mid-Major programs, the data is clear; reluctance to facilitate NIL collectives puts teams at a disadvantage. At every increasing level of success, an increase in collective frequency is noticed. While Mid-Major programs without collectives have still been able to achieve rankings in the top 100, programs at the highest level have all embraced this new recruiting tool.” (link)

After experiencing record attendance in 2023, teams across all sports will face obstacles in trying to duplicate those numbers, according to TicketManager Co-Founder/CEO Tony Knopp, who tells Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher: “Teams are going to have to work significantly harder to make less money. The sky isn’t falling, but it’s definitely not as rosy as is being depicted.” Insurance broker Hub International adds: “Soaring business costs, extreme weather, and staffing challenges…could hamper the entertainment and sport industry’s ability to generate revenue [in 2024].” While a growing GDP and low unemployment levels suggest conditions are favorable for continued ticket demand, Fisher notes credit card balances reached a new all-time high in the U.S. last year. Additionally, inflation, while slowing, is also eating into consumers’ buying power. On top of that, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently found that prices for sports tickets jumped 25.1% between October 2022 and the same month this year. Knopp: “Money simply buys less now. Everything is more expensive. Companies are already cutting costs, and they’re usually first. For consumers, it’s a trailing indicator.” More from Fisher. (link)

Volleyball is booming. Friday night’s NCAA Tournament semifinals averaged 1.1M viewers on ESPN, a 52% uptick compared to last year. The semis also set a record for the most-attended indoor match at 19,598. Today’s Nebraska-Texas national title tilt (3pm EST on ABC) will look to continue the sport’s momentum. Sportico’s Asli Pelit dives into the emergence of three pro leagues that are building upon the surging popularity of the college game - Athletes Unlimited, which was launched in 2021, League One Volleyball (LOVB), which is set for its first season next year, and the Professional Volleyball Federation (PVF), with its first campaign set to begin just a little more than a month from now. Athletes Unlimited co-Founder & CEO Joe Patricof: “Advertisers are starting to realize that there’s a huge, passionate audience here. And ultimately, it’s the advertiser interest that will drive greater coverage. [...] The future of volleyball right now has never been brighter. When you get a virtuous cycle where the creation of more opportunities for pros to play leads to more pros playing, which leads to more advertiser interest, which leads to more media coverage, which leads to better television. And it all fuels one another.” Lots more. (link, link)

New Mexico State Football HC Jerry Kill says New Mexico tried to deny the Aggies practice field time ahead of last night’s Isleta New Mexico Bowl. Kill: “It's a great bowl game, but here's the deal: They were going to make us practice on a high school field and let Fresno (State) practice in the indoor, and that particular day, it snowed. But [New Mexico Bowl Executive Director] Jeff [Siembieda] busted his butt and had to argue with their people to get us on the thing.” Kill added “I hope the AD here [Eddie Nuñez] gets the same damn discipline with the people around this state that Diego got, because he deserves it. It don't bother me a damn bit. When he don't let us ... practice in the indoor facility, when he don't want us to do this and do that, that's chickens---. I don't care, that's my opinion, if I get in trouble, I don't give a s---, either. Because I can go down to Mexico tomorrow, drink margaritas and let you all enjoy your life, because I'll be enjoying mine. But I've got class. I've had class my whole life.” (link)

Central Michigan AD Amy Folan sat down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz from the 2023 Women Leader’s Convention to discuss the Chippewas’ uptick in football attendance, changes to the transfer window, how she approaches burnout with staff, determining fit when hiring at CMU and more. Folan also talks about the growing resource gap and how to close it. “Gaps are getting bigger with all the conference realignment, but I think it's always been the challenge, and the MAC has had great consistency and continuity. We're in a great geographic footprint, we're probably as strong and stable as they come, so I think what we try to do is do what we do well. … I'm excited that we're in the Big Ten footprint, and I think that our value to the ecosystem is proven. So, we keep trying to demonstrate and make sure that everybody understands. … If we don't own our brand and our story, it can get lost.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

Michigan State paid TurnkeyZRG $80K to assist in its football coaching hire that landed Jonathan Smith as the leader of the Spartans. By comparison, this was $20K less than MSU paid DHR International to place former HC Mel Tucker in 2020. TurnkeyZRG’s placement of Smith was priced on top of an existing deal that MSU AD Alan Haller struck with the search firm, to serve as the athletic department’s “talent management” consultant at a cost of $4K/month. The retainer agreement comes with a 12-month warranty on Smith if he is terminated within a year for “any reason other than reorganizations, elimination of position, takeover or material change in job responsibility or direct supervisor.” Again, for comparison, DHR’s guarantee on Tucker was for two years, and lapsed in January 2022. LSU becomes the ninth college baseball partner of Uplift Labs. The Tigers will be the first, however, to use Uplift’s markerless motion capture assessments, which, using two iPhones or iPads, can analyze an athlete’s movement patterns and sport-specific motions. According to a meta-analysis conducted by researchers from Buffalo, one in 10 college students is a pathological gambler, far higher than the 2-5% of the U.S. general population estimated to have a gambling problem, according to Time’s Oliver Staley, who adds: “Other studies place the number of student gambling addicts lower, but still higher than the overall population of pathological gamblers.” Staley points out the behavior on college campuses isn’t limited to sports betting and also includes ETF trading, cryptocurrency trading and other forms of gambling. The common denominator among all these behaviors are mobile phones. Psychiatrist James Sherer: “You don’t have to go to a casino, you don’t have to go to a bank, you don’t need to carve time out of your schedule, you can do it at work, you can do it in the middle of the night.” Meanwhile, TV ad spends for gambling sites have increased from $197M for all of 2021 to $305M through November of this year and Sherer notes: “Because of the way advertising works these days, even if you are trying to avoid it, you are going to be served up more options and opportunities to re-engage in that behavior than if you were someone who never engaged in that behavior in the first place.” (link)

Michigan Concussion Center Director Dr. Steven Broglio talks with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker about the recent “Concussion Exposure and Suicidal Ideation, Planning, and Attempts Among US High School Students” article which appeared recently in a special mental health issue of the Journal of Athletic Training. Broglio and Banker dive into the findings of the article, including whether a greater proportion of male or female athletes reported one or more concussions last year and other key takeaways for college administrators and coaches. Broglio advises talking with suicide experts about specific behaviors to be on the lookout for, but notes that in his role as an athletic trainer he keeps an eye out for individuals who are withdrawn from the team. “That’s one of the strengths of an athletic trainer is they tend to know the athletes very well. They get to know them on a one-on-one basis, and we're trying to sort of spot those irregularities and then be in contact with our supervising physician or other healthcare providers that can help with that situation.” Check out the full Q&A on an important topic on Connect. USA Today’s Josh Peter explores how AI might be used to help athletes beat drug tests, and MIT professor Manolis Kellis says the most feasible approach would be to use generative AI to alter existing PEDs that trigger drug tests and make them undetectable by current testing technology. Specifically, Kellis believes AI could be used to study molecular structure of the existing PEDs and determine what other molecules could be used to alter them. “I’m 100% sure that if they’re in that business (of doping), they’re using it. If I were in the doping business, I would be crazy not to use generative AI right now.’’ Hunter College professor Lei Xie says it’s possible such technology is being used right now because the process of altering PEDs is similar to that which already exists to alter drugs. “It is similar to drug repurposing (repositioning), which we have worked on for years.” Penn State College of Medicine Director of AI and Biomedical Informatics Dajiang Liu adds: “There is often a gap between the development of a new drug and testing procedures that can detect that. It is not surprising to me that such a gap would happen to new AI-enabled drugs. At the same time, AI-driven technologies will also accelerate the development of testing procedures to identify drug use.’’ (link)

SportsPro CEO Nick Meacham unpacks Netflix’s strategy to live sports following the company’s announcement that it would stream an exhibition tennis match between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in March. “Why buy media rights when you can build your own assets? That seems to be the motto of Netflix when it comes to live sports. … To date they're leaning into assets that can provide supplementary marketing return for existing content i.e. documentary series. This provides a whole layer of additional value on top of the traditional acquisition or retention metrics most platforms would use. … Given the scale of their audience (245M+ global subscribers), they give something NO-ONE else can provide – unrivaled reach and scale for any event. If they do move into a new era of live sports rights acquisition, they'll likely play a different game re: traditional content acquisition and use their scale as a huge drawcard for those sports properties to leverage the reach for sponsorship over paying huge rights fees.” Meacham goes on to conclude this is “another nail in the coffin of traditional sports properties who believe historical value would be a greater drawcard to sports fans over the new influencer era of sports and entertainment that continues to be more prevalent globally. (Misfits, Kings League, Netflix events, etc). Ultimately I'm left wondering if the sports industry will be excited or worried about Netflix's approach. One thing is for sure, their approach to sports is picking up pace – fast.” (link)
