The Road to Houston…
+ …is down to four. Michigan, Washington, Texas and Alabama have advanced to the College Football Playoff, leaving undefeated ACC champion Florida State on the outside looking in. (link)
+ NC State AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Boo Corrigan on whether Seminoles QB Jordan Travis’ injury was an immediate disqualifier for FSU: “No, not at all. I think what we were looking at, and again, like the previous question, and I don't know if you heard it or not, it doesn't happen just in isolation. It happens, as well, when other teams around them are doing. But in the eyes of the committee, Florida State is a different team without Jordan Travis. One of the things we do consider is player availability, and our job is to rank the best teams, and in the final decision looking at that, it was Alabama at 4 and Florida State at 5.” Asked whether this was the most difficult selection process he’s been a part of, CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock responded: “In just looking at it from the whole big picture, we've never had a year with eight teams at the top as good as these are, and the five conference champions 1 through 5, we've never had it come out that way. My feeling is it probably was the toughest. I'm going to sound like a coach and say I need to look at the video, need to go back and look at the year-by-year narrative that we have.” More from Corrigan and Hancock. (link)
+ Reactions from Tallahassee include this from Seminoles AD Michael Alford: “The consequences of giving in to a narrative of the moment are destructive, far reaching, and permanent. Not just for Florida State, but college football as a whole. The argument of whether a team is the ‘most deserving OR best’ is a false equivalence. It renders the season up to yesterday irrelevant and significantly damages the legitimacy of the College Football Playoff. … To eliminate [FSU’s players and coaches] from a chance to compete for a national championship is an unwarranted injustice that shows complete disregard and disrespect for their performance and accomplishments. It is unforgivable. … For many of us, today’s decision by the committee has forever damaged the credibility of the institution that is the College Football Playoff. … The committee failed college football today.” (link)
+ ACC Commissioner Phillips: “It's unfathomable that Florida State, an undefeated Power Five conference champion, was left out of the College Football Playoff. Their exclusion calls into question the selection process and whether the Committee's own guidelines were followed, including the significant importance of being an undefeated Power Five conference champion. My heart breaks for the talented FSU student-athletes and coaches and their passionate and loyal fans. Florida State deserved better. College football deserved better." (link)
+ FSU HC Mike Norvell also expressed his frustration: “What is the point of playing games? Do you tell players it is okay to quit if someone goes down? Do you not play Senior Day for fear of injury? What is the motivation to schedule challenging non-conference games? … What happened today goes against everything that is true and right in college football.” (link)

Florida lawmakers are considering legislation to protest Florida State’s exclusion, Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports. “It’s unclear what direction a bill could take – but legislators are currently discussing multiple options, the source said. At least three government officials in Florida have commented publicly so far criticizing the CFP’s selection process. Former FSU star/Philadelphia Eagle Corey Simon, now a Florida state senator: “The corruption of college football rears its ugly head again. ESPN and Disney have a vested interest in the SEC participating in the CFP. Lawsuits should be filed tomorrow.” (link)
|
Also in disagreement with the selections - this one being Liberty over SMU as the Group of 5 representative in the New Year’s Six - was AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco: “SMU was the only FBS team to beat a CFP-ranked opponent on the road in a conference championship game. It challenged itself with a nonconference schedule against a top-15 team and last year's national runner up, both on the road, played competitively in both of those games, and was undefeated and dominant in conference games. … It is especially disappointing to see that the committee appears to have applied different standards in SMU's case than they did with the selection of the top four teams. A double-standard with our conference is also at work.” (link)

Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh reacted to the Wolverines being selected for the College Football Playoff by saying: “I hear a lot of the controversy about who should’ve been in, who shouldn’t have been in it. It’s going to be fortunate that the next year is going to be an expanded playoff and a true champion – it’s just going to be better. As you make those comments, I want you to remember – it’s the players. Don’t forget to give them a share of the revenue.” (link)

Big 12 football teams averaged 88% of football stadium capacity this season, a 9% YoY increase, according to Commissioner Brett Yormark. Speaking with the media before Saturday’s conference championship game, Yormark also addressed the future of conference title games with the expansion of the College Football Playoff: “Hugely relevant for us. This is the tentpole event. Everything leads up to this moment. It creates a wonderful narrative for this conference. It's a showcase event and something I'm committed to. I know there's been a lot of discussion amongst the commissioners about what that might look like, but it relates to the Big 12, we love this game, we love being at AT&T. Our fans love it. … For me, it's a tentpole event. It lets the world know who we are and where we're going, and it's a wonderful narrative for us.” Yormark also confirmed the commissioners sent a 5-7 format for the expanded CFP to the board, “and I was strongly in favor of that.” (link)

Richmond AD John Hardt Q&As with the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor about the CAA and the Spiders’ future in it. Hardt points out he wasn’t surprised to see Delaware leave because the Blue Hens did a “good job of communicating their intentions and process as far as reviewing their options for their athletic program. ... To see such a strong football member move on to FBS is disheartening for me in my chair as athletic director.” As for whether the Blue Hens’ departure – as well as James Madison’s before them – changes UR’s position regarding conference affiliation moving forward, Hardt says: “As an athletic director, it would be irresponsible for any institution not to continually assess its conference memberships and ensure it’s in the best possible position both now and in the future. So we’re, at Richmond, constantly evaluating all aspects of our operations, including conference memberships, to make sure the Spider student-athletes are ideally situated for competitive, academic, and future lifetime success. … The CAA is strong. It’s a nationally respected league in football and it will continue to be strong. But not only are those cornerstone programs gone, but those were regional rivals for us and I know our fans and our athletes looked forward to those games each and every year. How that’s going to impact us moving forward? Well, those are gaps now that we’re going to have to fill and we’re going to work with CAA’s leadership in filling those gaps appropriately.” (link)

Also on the bonus front: Alabama’s Nick Saban ($360K), Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Washington’s Kalen DeBoer ($200K), Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz ($175K), Florida State’s Mike Norvell, Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz, Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin and Oregon’s Dan Lanning ($150K), Texas’ Steve Sarkisian ($125K), Auburn’s Hugh Freeze and Penn State’s James Franklin ($100K). With the football transfer portal opening today, On3’s Pete Nakos takes a look at the market, and one agent tells him: “More and more people are starting to take their emotion out of the NIL side. Top talent is being paid. Production and experience matters. Guys aren’t afraid to enter the portal just to figure out their worth.” Another agent, who represents a QB, says: “I have lost track of seven-figure offers.” An SEC player personnel staffer observes there appears to have been a “shift from the early stage to the retain portion. More people are seeing it’s about maintaining your roster and keeping your guys another year, rather than the young fellas who aren’t a proven commodity.” (link)

Accordingly, Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) Founder Jason Belzer breaks down how Power 5 collectives are deploying funds across football position group. DBs are receiving the biggest allotment at 22.5%, followed by OL (21.2%), DL (19.7%), WR (12.9%), QB (9%), RB (7.1%), LB (5.7%), and special teams (1.9%). (link); SANIL also releases the first publicly available by-position expected compensation rates for FBS student-athletes for the 2024 transfer portal, based on data collected from contracts across their collectives. The National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) is focusing on college events to continue marketing itself, as it did over the weekend by serving as the title partner for the Legends of Basketball Las Vegas Invitational. Sportico’s Eric Jackson: “The nonprofit organization, which supports players in their transition after playing, aims to grow its visibility with a pair of games set to be broadcast on ESPN and CBS Sports while it creates new revenue streams using college athletes.” NBRPA President Scott Rochelle: “We’re trying to be a widespread basketball entity that’s touching a lot of different areas to galvanize basketball across the board. We’ve really touched the highpoints of that [pro level] opportunity, so it’s important for us to expand our reach outside of the NBA category.” Rochelle also notes the organization is paying hundreds of former NBA and WNBA players per year through its group licensing deal with the NBA and hopes to share its expertise in group licensing in the college NIL landscape. “Some partners come into college basketball, slap their name on the middle of the court, and that’s all they need for their ROI. For us, we’re working across a lot of different elements outside of brand recognition, like celebrating former [pro] players and supporting [current] college players.” (link)

The USGA and R&A are expected to announce this week a rules change to roll back distance in golf. The expected decision likely would make nearly every popular golf ball played both professionally and recreationally non-conforming. Golf Digest’s Mike Stachura: “In simple terms, if a golf ball is currently close to the Overall Distance Standard, as a high majority of golf balls used in elite competition (and popular in the marketplace) are, then raising the speed by 5 mph would make them fly 15 yards farther, or well past the current distance limit. Balls would then have to be made to stay within that 317-yard standard. … That decision apparently will mean a period of bifurcated rules starting in 2028, when the elite professionals use a shorter golf ball than recreational players.” (link)

The Great Debate...
+ Florida State AD Michael Alford: “We can stack our defense up against any offense in the nation. And, given a month to prepare, our offense will be ready. This is why we play the game. Otherwise, let's just sit around and see who the oddsmakers pick and do away with the committee. Because if they leave out FSU, they will significantly damage the legitimacy of the CFP.” (link)
+ Alabama’s Greg Byrne: “If we would have played a Group of Five game instead of Texas, there’d be no debate right now.” (link); More: “Win over No. 1 in their backyard. Four wins over the top 25 … the growth and development of our team from week 1 to week 12. And not all schedules and conferences are created equal … the week-in and week-out in the SEC is the most challenging in the country.” (link)
+ Texas’ Chris Del Conte: “I don’t know how we’re not.” (link)
+ Georgia’s Josh Brooks echoes SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who used a famous Sesame Street line during ESPN College GameDay yesterday to describe the competition level in the SEC versus the rest of the sport: “One of these things is not like the other!” (link)
|
Group of 5 Selection Debate…
+ AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco: “SMU joins a long list of American Athletic Conference champions that have proven themselves worthy of a New Year’s Six bowl bid. To challenge themselves as they did in non-conference games, playing competitive games on the road ... and beating a ranked team on the road to win The American Championship, shows that the Mustangs are undoubtedly one of the top teams in the nation and deserving of a New Year’s Six bid.” (link)
+ Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod: “Liberty, the nation’s only 13-0 G5 league champion, has proven itself beyond worthy of a New Year’s Six bowl bid. Liberty’s perfect season is something that should be celebrated and capping it off with a second win over a 10-win New Mexico State team in the CUSA Championship Game on Friday night stamped an exclamation point on their resume.” (link)

Kansas alum Brad Garlinghouse has committed $35M to the KU Endowment to support the Gateway District project. KU AD Travis Goff: “In my time here, Brad has continuously looked for ways to help support the future of Kansas Athletics at an important time of change. This investment supports all 500-plus of our student-athletes, who in recent semesters have had record-breaking performances in the classroom and on their respective playing fields. Each of them will benefit from Brad’s amazing gift, and we are truly honored by that.” (link)

Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to look inside bowl game prep, the process of selecting teams and what types of things factor into that decision. Hogan on student-athlete revenue sharing: “Our job remains the same. How are we all working together to create as many opportunities for the student-athletes and the institution as humanly possible? One big piece of that is revenue. You’re always doing that, that hasn’t changed, it’s just about how that revenue gets distributed.” Hogan is a proponent of NIL, from the business aspects, the tax prep, etc, “What a learning tool in this learning lab of a college experience. … Bowls, we have to play in that NIL space and grossing up opportunities for all the student-athletes if we can.” Lots more. (link)

During pregame of yesterday’s Big 12 Football Championship, fans in attendance could scan a QR code displayed on the video boards to send a message to their member of Congress to support a federal NIL bill. The ad was run by the Coalition for the Future of College Athletics. (link)

Clemson Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance Amanda Richardson talks all things NIL with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker, including the Clemson Athletics Branding Institute, working with collectives, agents, and the impact of changes to the portal window. The two also discuss voluntary registration for NIL deals, Transformation Committee recommendations and more. Richardson notes that some student-athletes don’t want to participate in NIL deals because their plates are already full. “They’re having to go to school, they're doing study hall, maybe they have tutors, they have practice. The majority of them that want to play at the next level want to do more work from an athletic standpoint. Their coaches can't be there obviously, but their calendars are already full, and then they're trying to squeeze in something else. We had a company reach out this summer to a student-athlete, and they were just like, ‘I'm just taking the summer off. I just want to focus on myself.’ Because mental health is obviously a big topic these days within athletics and so I think that we institutionally…put so much on these individuals and then on top of that they put so much on themselves, I think it's good that student athletes are just saying, ‘Hey I just need time for me. I need to take a break.’” (link)

College of Charleston is the latest department to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect for access to its administrative Talent Finder to assist with identification, recruiting, vetting & hiring of new staff. Cougars Deputy AD Kyle Denzel: “We are excited to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect to enhance our ability to attract and recruit talented professionals in collegiate sports. The staff at Connect has been extremely responsive and helpful in our mission to get staffed up with the best professionals as quickly as possible.” (link)

Friday night’s Washington-Oregon Pac-12 Football Championship tilt on ABC was the most-watched title game in league history with an average of 9.2M viewers & a peak of 11.1M. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner chimes in: “If the tactics and leadership had been different, the conference could have bet on itself in 2023 and pushed the media deal into the winter - and it would be in great position. But the lack of trust made that impossible” (link)
