Northern Iowa Interim AD Bob Bowlsby has no intention of pursuing the permanent post, telling reporters: “I had the opportunity to be the interim once before, and it turned into a full-time job. I don’t think it’s going to work that way this time. I don’t think it’ll be a six-month engagement. I think it’s probably more of a three- or four-month engagement. … It’s a good way for me to give back. It was hard for me to say no. I know a lot of the staff. I also know there are challenges. I’m going to need to get quickly up to speed on what those are so that I can keep the ship sailing in the direction it’s intended.” As far as finding the Panthers’ next AD goes, Bowlsby says: “We’ll draw upon my professional contacts. I think we’ll likely use an executive search firm. I expect when the time comes, that hire will be made by President Nook and the senior leadership. If they want my input, I’ll certainly provide it.” (link)

Now live on Connect: Utah State President Betsy Cantwell and AD Diana Sabau sit down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on the search process that brought Sabau to Logan, the unique timeline that brought the two to USU within days of each other and their combined vision for Aggies on both the academic and athletic sides of campus. Sabau also explains how she knew she was ready for an AD post and cites her time with the Big Ten, which “really got me thinking, ‘Okay, I’m ready to lead a department. I’m ready to lead our head coaches, I'm ready to be a part of our student-athletes’ daily lives to help them ensure success in competition and academics.’ And most importantly, I missed being on a campus. When you work at a conference office, you serve so many but you're like Switzerland, you cheer for everybody but you can't really get behind one specific institution at any given point. So, I just really missed that interaction, I missed that engagement and I really missed the problem-solving.” Full conversation. (link)

NBC News Chief Political Analyst Chuck Todd tells SBJ Executive Editor/Publisher Abe Madkour he is concerned about the future of college sports, explaining during a conversation at the Dealmakers convention in Washington, D.C.: “I worry that nobody is looking out for the best interests of college sports. Everybody's worried about the best interests of the SEC, the Big Ten, the ACC, Florida State, Miami. As a fan, I get it, but good god, we need a commissioner of college sports.” Todd also cited several existential dangers to the enterprise, including the possibility of the Power 4 breaking away from the NCAA. He also wondered when Alabama, for instance, is going to get fed up with receiving the same share of media revenue as Vanderbilt, and asked whether that could result in a promotion/relegation system. “I'm convinced if these conferences work together with and pooled their TV rights, they get more money out of the network. There’s even more money on the table to be had.” On NCAA President Charlie Baker: “If he can't fix the NCAA, then no one can.” (link)

+ North Carolina Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz explained in written statements to Michigan State faculty members that he would only accept the MSU presidency if he is able to lead “without undue interference.” Guskiewicz explains he’s had “very direct and honest conversations” with the MSU Board of Trustees about working more in concert should he accept the role and is confident the trustees value the shared governance. “I am certain we will not experience logical times in higher education anytime soon. But I am also certain the trustees at (MSU) want to work collectively and collaboratively to make MSU one of the premier global public research universities in the nation.” (link)

The number of transfers making up FBS rosters has risen from 6.4% in 2010 to 20.5% in 2023, according to data from SportSource Analytics. Colorado brought in the most first-year transfers and had the most games played by transfers of any FBS program (69.6%), followed by Texas State (64%), Charlotte (55.8%), Ole Miss (54.5%) and Massachusetts (53.3%). Meanwhile, outside of the military academies, Clemson had the fewest games played by transfers at just 0.3%, followed by Georgia at 5%. The data also show, per ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren, that the “biggest position group that has been impacted by the transfer portal has been quarterback with 56 FBS teams having a transfer quarterback account for 75% or more of the team's passing yards during the 2023 season, according to SportSource Analytics. The top six quarterbacks in passing yards are all transfers, and the top 10 quarterbacks in passing touchdowns are all transfers.” Since Sunday, more than 170 FBS student-athletes have entered their names in the portal. The NCAA yesterday approved an extended COVID-related blanket waiver that expands baseball rosters sizes from 35 to 40, increases the numbers of players on scholarship from 27 to 32 and allows for 40 official visits, up from the previous number of 25. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers offers some analysis: “The latest action by the NCAA is yet another example of the organization kicking the can down the road as it pertains to hardcoding roster management rules in college baseball. The waiver extension, however, does alleviate some concerns that head coaches have had the past couple of months about roster clarity for the 2024-25 academic calendar. While this news is welcomed with open arms by many, the goal, at least from the perspective of the American Baseball Coaches Association, is to have a long-term roster management framework.” Rogers also notes decision-makers are expected in the coming months to tackle the current redshirt rule. “Currently, football student-athletes can compete in 33% of the football season without burning a year of eligibility. Should the NCAA eventually make that equivalency the same for baseball, that would mean that a baseball player could play in 20 games of a 56-game season and still not lose their eligibility.” As it stands now, baseball student-athletes – absent a season-ending injury in the first 25% of the season, lose their redshirt with a single pitch or at-bat. Troy is the latest athletic department to partner with D1.relocation. Trojans AD Brent Jones: “We want to attract the best & brightest to Troy University. Accordingly, we are committed to providing our new Trojans with the best experience from the moment they become part of the family. That includes having a partner in the relocation process, no matter if they’re coming from inside the state of Alabama or from across the nation. We’re excited to partner with D1.relocation to provide our new Trojans with white glove service to ensure their move to Troy is smooth, efficient and representative of how we treat our family.” (link)

Former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby has agreed to serve as Northern Iowa’s Interim AD. Bowlsby: “Very few opportunities could have lured me out of retirement, even on a short-term basis. Plenty of people have contacted me, but when President Nook called I certainly listened intently. The invitation to help set up the next Director of Athletics at UNI for success was an opportunity that I simply couldn't refuse. UNI gave me such a remarkable opportunity as a young professional in collegiate athletics for which I'm eternally grateful. So much of what I learned at UNI helped guide my decisions throughout my career journey. I owe a great deal to UNI and it is my distinct pleasure to serve in this interim role until the position can be filled on a full-time basis." Bowlsby previously led the Panthers from 1983-1991. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey notes there are “complexities” associated with revenue sharing in college that don’t exist in professional sports, including Title IX considerations, and points out that student-athletes already enjoy several benefits which all “flow in a very positive way.” He adds: “When you start to change that model, rather than just being a headline or a talking point, we all have a responsibility to dig in to understand what that actually means for the support structures provided now, how those can become taxable events, how those affect the flow of financial aid directly to an individual. And again, we're talking about a broad array of programs. So just saying it's about 50 or 60 athletics departments, I've not seen legislation that narrows it to that reality. We have to think more broadly than just a few dozen programs.” (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne Q&As with The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner about the end of the Pac-12 in its current form. Byrne, who attended Oregon and Arizona State and worked at Oregon and Oregon State before taking over as AD at Arizona, explains when and why he first became worried the league was heading down a troubling path: “One of the first surprises was when we found out that the ADs and Presidents/Chancellors would no longer meet together. … This change siloed off the ADs, and the perception was things would be managed at the conference and CEO level without AD input. We finally pushed for time together at least once a year, but the narrative in the room was often controlled by only a few voices. The next thing that got our attention was the spending on the conference office and the move to downtown San Francisco. We were very aware that every dollar spent at the conference level was a dollar that didn’t get to our student-athletes. When asked to review the expenses for the new conference offices, we were not given any pertinent information. … The other red flag was when we were given high, medium and low financial projections for the Pac-12 Networks — and none of them were ultimately met. From there, two narratives began to emerge: 1) The Pac-12 Networks were focused on exposure, and there wasn’t any promise of significant revenue, and 2) The Pac-12 Networks were turning a profit. Many of us did not believe those two narratives. We agreed exposure was an important part of the plan, but so was prioritizing a positive revenue stream for our campuses. We believed that the Networks were not actually turning a profit and were never given a clear answer on revenues vs. expenses, no matter how much we pushed.” Lots more. (link)

+ Despite reports to the contrary, Syracuse AD John Wildhack says former Mississippi State/Florida Football HC Dan Mullen was never a candidate for the job that was eventually given to Georgia AC Fran Brown. “I don’t know where this originated and it kind of had a life of its own, but I never met with Dan Mullen. I never talked to him about this job, let alone him being on campus and meeting with him. None of that.” Mullen has since said he plans to continue in his role at ESPN for at least another year. (link)

+ Grambling State AD Trayvean Scott explains that former Football HC Hue Jackson’s contract was only guaranteed for the first two years and that “this $800K bill that they’re trying to tack us with is just a fallacy. Obviously knowing and understanding the terms and conditions of Coach Jackson’s written agreement, we were very intentional and transparent in understanding where we are financially and were able, obviously, to be able to take it on.” Scott hopes to have a new HC in place within 7-10 days. (link)
+ Arkansas has officially hired former Football HC Bobby Petrino to return as OC. Petrino will earn $1.6M annually as part of a two-year deal. The Razorbacks will also pay up to $25K in moving expenses/temporary housing. (link)

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey takes aim at the NCAA after it denied Montana State-to-West Virginia men’s basketball student-athlete RaeQuan Battle’s transfer waiver. “For too long, the NCAA has failed to maintain a consistent and defensible transfer policy. Refusing to let RaeQuan play is only the latest example. Its approach has placed it in legal peril. The NCAA is not immune from the laws of competition. It cannot continue reaching wildly inconsistent conclusions about students’ eligibility that harm athletic and economic fair play. This decision is deeply disturbing. I am coordinating with RaeQuan’s attorney and other attorneys general on next steps. But rest assured, my office will vigorously pursue all of our legal options.” (link); Ohio AG Dave Yost adds: “General Morrisey and I talked today about this. Too many stories about too many young people being harmed by the NCAA’s high-handed, arbitrary and anti-competitive behavior. Got my slingshot and five smooth stones up in the attic…” (link)

DePaul has received the permits it needs to renovate the Sullivan Athletic Center and McGrath-Phillips Arena. Designed by Antunovich Associates and HNTB, the renovation will infill one of the three basketball courts with two stories of new athletic support space. The first floor will be dedicated to the health and wellness of all Blue Demon student athletes and will include a team dining space, nutrition bar, sports medicine treatment spaces and offices, hydrotherapy, a weight room, and multi-purpose meeting rooms. Across the street, the school is planning to build a new basketball practice facility that would feature a brick facade that mirrors the aesthetic of the Lincoln Park neighborhood and floor-to-ceiling glass around the basketball gyms to offer views of the surrounding neighborhood. DePaul men’s and women’s basketball will move their training, practices, and operations into the building. Check out the renderings. (link)

Boston College has begun using Evolv Technology’s AI-based weapons detection screening system at the entrances to its football, hockey, and basketball games. Evolv uses sensor technology with AI to provide accurate threat detection at high volume and fast speed, meaning the majority of fans can pass directly through, reducing backup at the gates. Eagles Assoc. AD for Facilities and Operations Matt Conway: “We saw the deployments at Gillette Stadium and Fenway Park, and know there’s a standard being set now in the Boston area. The Evolv system combines the highest levels of security and screening with convenience and ease of entry for the patrons at our venues.” (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel observes that [Arkansas QB] KJ Jefferson and [Coastal Carolina QB] Grayson McCall entering the portal is reminiscent of Washington QB Michael Penix and Oregon QB Bo Nix insofar as they are “two guys I'd assumed were done with college,” but “Thanks to NIL, anyone who's not a guaranteed high-round pick is playing out their entire eligibility. Which is great for college football.” (link); Meanwhile, Nebraska HC Matt Rhule says a “good QB in the portal costs $1M, $1.5M, 2M" in NIL. Just so we’re on the same page, right? Let’s make sure we all understand what’s happening. There are some teams that have $6-7M players playing for them.” (link)

Michigan-Ohio State was by far the weekend’s most-watched game, drawing 19.07M viewers for Fox. Viewership peaked at 22.9M from 3:30 to 3:45 PM. Fox Sports President of Insights & Analytics Michael Mulvihill calls it official. “The 2023 College Football regular season is the most-watched of all time across all networks. 151.9B minutes of viewing with Army-Navy still to add a little more to that total.” Sports TV Ratings points out that a “big increase in CFB windows available on broadcast networks helps.” (link)
