Harding Football took home its first national title, breaking the college football record for rush yards in a season in the process. After the win, HC Paul Simmons recounted the power of the pep rally turned graduation the night before as HU graduation was on Saturday: “I think the guys felt the power and the spirit of the brotherhood extended by today and that was my message pre-game. You have to understand this great cloud of witnesses that is with you, that's pulling for you, that believes in you, that loves you and the scoreboard doesn’t matter. They just want to see you be excellent and do things in a way that really does honor God. There’s so many warriors here today and last night, guys that never had a chance to play in a meaningful game, guys that never had any facilities, but just poured their heart out and helped build a foundation so that we could be here today.” (link, link); The game was the second-most attended DII FB championship game since 2015, with 12,552 fans. NCAA President Charlie Baker talks with HBCU Gameday’s Tolly Carr and says after meeting with each HBCU conference, there are three things that need to be done: “Number one, we need to help them stoke their fan bases. This is one of the biggest things I think we need to do for all of our colleges, which is to do more because of our scale to create fan bases and grow the fan bases because at the end of the day the fan base is what creates excitement and what creates brand and that's what everybody's looking for here. The second is I think we can help them with the cost of what they pay for stuff. You know, we've never really tried to create a purchasing collaborative as an organization, and yet we have 1,100 members, they buy a ton of the same stuff. We can save everybody 10, 15, 20% of what they pay for all the products. …. It’s real money that they could turn around and invest in other things. And I think the third thing we could do is be flexible on how we think about the way these organizations need to operate, what divisions they want to be in, what sports they want to be part of, and to recognize that the standard way of doing stuff historically just isn't going to work going forward.” Baker added on the work of HBCU commissioners in D.C.: “(CIAA Commissioner) Jacqie McWilliams and I have talked quite a bit about this, and I personally believe that the HBCUs have as much influence or more as virtually anybody else who goes down there and talks to people. Their voices really matter. I could feel a change in some of the conversations I was having with people in the House and the Senate after the HBCU use paid visits down there, and I guess it’s up there from here. It’s down from Massachusetts to Washington. They’re really important and they matter. And they should be important and they should matter.” Full interview. (link, link)

Coming off an underwhelming (for them) fall sports season in which Football, Women’s Volleyball and Women’s Soccer missed the NCAA tournament, Northwest Missouri State AD Andy Peterson opines: “I still like the trajectory of all the programs. We're not going to hit the panic button and reset everything because we didn't make the playoffs this year. I feel very confident in our coaching staffs and what they're doing. I'm even more confident in our student athletes and who they are. [...] Last year was the best year we’ve ever had in our institution’s history in terms of athletics. So, to expect that to continue is a little short sighted, right?” First-year President Lance Tatum gives a vote of confidence to Football HC Rich Wright and weighs in on the past and future of Bearcat Athletics: “The University has, over the last 20 plus years, invested in its athletics program, and I understand why they do that. It's a great branding tool. It builds tradition. It builds a connection to the University for the students. It's that one thing that everybody can connect to. [...] We're going to have to continue to evaluate and decide where we need to invest again in athletics.” Currently on the docket is raising half of the $17 million cost of planned renovations to Martindale Hall by the end of 2024, at which point the state would cover the other half. U.S. Justice Department Antitrust Division Asst. Attorney General Jonathan Kanter explains to the Wall Street Journal’s Emily Glazer how the DOJ could become involved in the antitrust issues facing college sports: “The NCAA and the antitrust case went all the way to the Supreme Court. It established or reaffirmed an important objective of antitrust law, which is that it’s not just to protect what consumers pay, it’s to protect all stakeholders in an economy. If student-athletes are being deprived of valuable compensation because of an antitrust violation, that is a cognizable and actionable antitrust harm. This is an issue that we addressed in one of our cases involving a book-publisher merger, Penguin Random House/Simon & Schuster. We went to court to challenge that transaction and we won. The theory of harm wasn’t that book prices were going to go up. The theory of harm was that professional authors, people who research and write books for a living, were going to get less. The court upheld our merger challenge based on harm to authors just as the Supreme Court upheld an antitrust challenge based on harm to student-athletes.” (link)

Bloomberg News’ Nic Querolo, Danielle Moran and Marie Patino dive into the challenging economics facing small colleges and identified five metrics to “identify increasing pressures on higher-ed institutions through 2021,” with around 170 meeting at least three criteria. Those metrics: three-year average acceptance rate over 80%; three-year average yield rate below 20%; three consecutive years of falling full-time enrollment, losing at least 10%; three straight years of growing institutional aid to students, up at least 10%; and three consecutive years of operating losses. The research of 973 schools found five with all five metrics as of 2021 that are still open. One of those institutions, St. Edward’s, pushed back on these metrics noting recent enrollment and program growth, flaws in interpreting enrollment data during the pandemic and more, noting: “these traditional, outdated metrics tend to preference historically white and wealthy institutions, and ignore the positive metrics related to student success among minority-serving institutions.” Wittenberg (DIII) President Michael Frandsen, whose institution meets all five: “You have an industry with falling demand and overcapacity. We would be foolish to expect anything other than consolidation and shakeout. […] Every time I get together with presidents, more and more of us are talking about struggles. It’s real, and people who are in denial about it are going to have a real problem.” (link)

S&P Global Ratings is projecting a “bifurcated” outlook for higher education next year, with strong institutions faring well and less selective colleges expected to face challenges. According to its report, S&P forecasts operating pressures will increase in 2024 with enrollment challenges and wage and expense growth combining for “weaker” operating margins than 2023. “Although we expect greater economic stresses in 2024, we also expect higher-rated institutions with solid demand will maintain their creditworthiness as they continue to generate positive cash flow and operating margins, thus sustaining their healthy balance sheets.” (link)
