Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger asks several conference commissioners about the necessity of continuing conference championship games once the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams next year. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “We are in a period of change and assessment. Conference championships should be assessed. Is it necessary to play a 13th game?” Others, including Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco, also believe the role of conference championships should be evaluated, but SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Dellenger: “As the conference with the most experience conducting conference championship games, we continue to believe it is an important part of determining a conference champion. The [expanded playoff] system is predicated on conference champions being identified in a clear way. As things change, we’ve had the conversation, but what I’ve described to you is the overall destination of that dialogue.” More. (link)

The College Football Playoff would like to sign multiple network TV partners a la the Super Bowl, according to Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy and Amanda Christovich, who report the CFP is “considering a structure that would rotate the title game among those media partners on an annual basis.” As of now, a structure has yet to be agreed on, but ESPN and Fox have reportedly already made their presentations to the CFP, and McCarthy and Christovich note: “ESPN might be willing to give up part of the CFP to pay for other expensive rights like the NBA, sources said. Cost-cutting Disney is no longer okay with ESPN simply outbidding rivals for marquee rights. Under chairman Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN has become more disciplined and picky: ESPN walked away from expensive Big Ten rights — despite a 40-year relationship with the conference.” (link)

The FBS and FCS Oversight Committees have adopted legislation to increase the number of official recruiting visits a school can host from 56 to 70 each academic year. The committees also adopted legislation that would prohibit schools from arranging for photographs or photographing prospective student-athletes or those accompanying them on unofficial visits. The DI Council will review the proposed legislation at the NCAA Convention in January. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit contrasts the disparate paths taken by New Mexico State and Idaho’s formerly embattled football programs, with the Vandals moving from FBS to FCS and the Aggies opting to remain in FBS. Former Idaho President Chuck Staben tells Libit: “I anticipated that there were going to be a few more schools that would go from FBS to FCS—New Mexico State being the primary one.” Aggies AD Mario Moccia: “If we were to drop our football down a level, my argument was the perception of the institution would go down. There are 133 teams in the FBS. The only more exclusive club is the United States Senate and we’ve got this thing in Las Cruces. Let’s embrace that.” Both Staben and Moccia can take some measure of vindication this season, with Idaho set to compete in the second round of the FCS Playoffs and NMSU sitting at 10-1, its best season since 1960. Moccia notes the buy-games at the FBS level can make all the difference, pointing out that had the Aggies remained in FCS, they would’ve been lucky to get fraction of the $1.85M the program received for traveling to the Plains to play Auburn; however, Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill contends that “the additional revenue in some of those FBS conferences gets eaten up so quickly by coach salaries and travel. It gets lost in the shuffle the fact that expenses are going to rise and you are going to be expected to come up with more and your donors are going to have to come up with more money.” More from Libit. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says there will only be one game on ABC each Saturday as part of the league’s new deal with ABC/ESPN. According to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, Sankey notes that game "might be" in prime time. Dodd: “That would hint the prime time game would be the de facto window for the league's best game currently on CBS in the 3:30 ET window. Sankey clarifies: “With the new broadcast agreement, the SEC will have MORE broadcast TV windows available on ABC in the future. Currently, we essentially have one broadcast TV game each week. In the future there can be three SEC games on broadcast TV during a football Saturday.” (link); Meanwhile, the SEC Football Championship will be held in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium through at least 2031 after the two sides agreed to a five-year extension. The MAC has established a new football scheduling model that will take effect next season. The new model eliminates divisions and will send the top two teams based on conference winning percentage to the championship game. Under the new format, each team will play at least once home and away during a three-year cycle. The league has also inked a one-year extension to keep the conference title game at Ford Field in Detroit through the 2025 season. (link, link)

The Brandr Group has withdrawn its pending claims against EA Sports and OneTeam Partners in regards to athlete licensing for EA Sports College Football, Extra Points’ Matt Brown reports. TBG says in a statement that it believes it is in its best interest, as well as the best interest of student-athletes, to “monitor the progress of NCAA Football before determining whether further legal action is needed to protect its clients. Brandr takes this step following the recent settlement of past disputes with OneTeam Partners, wherein Brandr and OneTeam recognized their shared commitment to ensuring and protecting the maximization of the NIL value for all college athletes.” A statement from OneTeam adds that the two entities will “collaborate on future initiatives that benefit athletes and support them throughout their athletic careers.” Full statements.
