The Florida State Board of Trustees has called a special board meeting for tomorrow morning, according to ESPN’s Andrea Adelson, who notes that while no reason was given, “sources indicated to ESPN that the board is expected to discuss its long-term athletics future.” ESPN’s David Hale unpacks the significance: “There's almost no world in which FSU is not a part of the ACC in 2024 and, probably, 2025.” A negotiated exit, Hale believes, is the most likely legal outcome if/when it comes to that. “Will other schools follow FSU's lead? I'd imagine so -- and I'd guess many are eager to see what comes of FSU's challenge -- but it's in the best interest of the large majority to stay put, be patient and see where this ends. When FSU and, perhaps, others leave, it will be with a big price tag associated with it -- at least $120M in exit fees per school + perhaps as much as $400M in media rights costs. The remaining schools share in that short-term windfall.” By adding Cal, Stanford and SMU, the ACC has ensured it will continue to meet its minimum membership requirement “so, even w/o FSU, remaining schools aren't going to lose TV $ (or network) under current agreement. That's good news for the remaining schools. It also could underpin part of FSU's legal argument to be released without financial restitution. What is the long term? I think that's the biggest question schools should be asking. Is there a way to work with the B12 (or others) to counter the SEC/B1G power? Or is a full breakaway of top teams likely in which a new model is created? And if that's the case, how best to position yourself ahead of time? I've talked to numerous ADs at ‘mid-tier’ schools who've said their chief concern is to be ready for ‘what comes next.’ Very few seem to think status quo is maintained beyond next 3-5 years.” (link, link)

Stanford will not cut sports as part of its move to the ACC, according to Cardinal AD Bernard Muir, who tells the San Francisco Chronicle: “We’re a 36-sport program, we’re going to continue to be a 36-sport program. There’s still challenges but luckily the university was in a good place to help this enterprise and allow athletics to still thrive. So now with the help of the university and with the help of a robust development plan, and getting others who have been affiliated with the university who’ve been supporting the university and supporting athletics, we think we have a great roadmap to continue to be what I would call kind of like maintaining this Olympic Village.” Muir acknowledges the department had some budget difficulties a few years ago, and “not to say that we’re totally out of the woods just yet, but we think we have with ample support from the university that we can make this work and transition to a new conference. Where it’s going to take a ramp up to get the media revenue that we’re hoping for, and we understand that that’s a challenge in the short term, but long term, we want to make sure that all 36 sports have a chance to thrive.” (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir says after being approved for $96M in funding from the state to add a new tower to FBC Mortgage Stadium that “we still have a lot of governance stuff to work through, internally in the university and then with the state. But we’re looking at trying to get this thing up and going by the 2026 season.” The new tower is expected to add up to 1,500 new seats, allowing season-ticket holders to move from the premium area to the new tower, and Mohajir tells The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel that “selling out 1,000 season tickets is not easy, but what it does is by building the tower, it allows people to move into new price points. So people that may have been an entry-level or family-level price point move to a different price point and people in the premium price will move to a higher premium.” It also “allows our fan base, especially ones who just graduated, to get an affordable ticket to an entry point.” (link)

Ticket sales and attendance for Louisville men’s basketball games continue to slide as the team struggles. The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn notes that “after years spent ranked among the most highly attended teams in college basketball, Louisville slipped to 22nd in average attendance last season. Average ticket sales were announced at 12,497 per game, per NCAA records. In 2019-20, the last time things were cooking around here, Louisville announced an average crowd of 16,658. That ranked seventh nationally. But the real problem is the Cards aren’t drawing anywhere near what’s being announced at games. According to university records requested by The Athletic, last year’s actual through-the-gates attendance averaged 6,557 per game. Only three games drew over 9,000. … This year is worse for the men. The first three regular-season home dates drew 16,037, total. Or 5,435 per game. Season ticket sales have fallen from 10,501 to 9,099.” Cardinals AD Josh Heird tells Quinn he is also trying to understand the program’s difficulties. “I think that’s the most difficult part of being an athletic director. Everything can align to say, ‘This is the one.’ Right? ‘A can’t-miss (hire).’ The example I always use is Scott Frost. Name one person in the country, when he was at UCF, that thought that wasn’t going to work at Nebraska.” Asked whether Payne is being afforded any sort of grace as a first-time HC, Heird says: “No, but I didn’t expect him to, and he didn’t, either. You’re the head coach of Louisville men’s basketball. Nobody cares that you’re a first-time head coach, you know? Nobody cares.” (link)

Since instituting the Russell Rule three years ago, 57% of the WCC’s 312 hires have come from traditionally underrepresented communities. From August 1, 2022, to July 31, 2023, 100% of the searches across the league met the Russell Rule requirement, with 63 hires out of 100 searches from a traditionally underrepresented community. Overall, 200 candidates from a traditionally underrepresented community were part of the final candidate pools in those 100 searches. In the Russell Rule’s first year (2020-21), 51.8% of the total hires (44 out of 85) were members of traditionally underrepresented communities. That number was 56.7% in the second year. WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson: “The three-year hiring data exemplifies the leadership and strong conference-wide commitment to creating a more inclusive environment throughout our membership. The late Bill Russell is a legendary figure who championed social justice efforts throughout his life, and we are appreciative of the opportunity to honor his connection to the WCC and all that he fought for with this hiring commitment.” (link)

+ Texas State and Football HC GJ Kinne agree to a new five-year deal through 2028. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Kinne’s $1M base salary puts him atop the Sun Belt, and “there’s also incentives for eight-plus wins and Sun Belt titles that can change Kinne’s base salary.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reports that even though Oregon State and Washington State have 30 days to inform the WCC whether they're joining for baseball, the “goal and preference would be for both to jointly join a power conference such as the Big 12 vs. going independent.” (link); Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer: “Left unsaid with the WCC taking in OSU/Wazzu for 2024-25 in sports like MBB and WBB is that it means Pac-12 is not going to get any sort of AQ waiver and will therefore open up another at large spot in various tournaments.” (link)

Texas Tech Football HC Joey McGuire, whose team was the first to use in-helmet communication when it did so during the Independence Bowl against Cal, tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger he’s hopeful the NCAA will pass legislation allowing for the technology to be used in all games moving forward. McGuire would like to see the sport adopt the same rules as the NFL: no wearables; a 15-second mic cutoff; one permitted player on each side of the ball; and only still shots on a tablet, not the video that’s now being allowed during bowl season. “Before you screw up the college game, let’s use the highest level of the game.” Cal HC Justin Wilcox agrees: “What the players don’t need is five coaches telling them what to do. It should be real streamlined. A play call and maybe a nugget here and there. That’s why the cutoff is important so that the coaches don’t get the player to the line of scrimmage and then play John Madden.” Red Raiders Head Equipment Manager Cayman Ancell believes there’s no going back now that coaches have used it. “Since we opened the bag with our coaches already, I don’t see how we can go back. It’s going to be tough moving forward to tell coaches, ’Hey, we used this during the bowl game but can’t next season.’” (link)

Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz talks about the role NIL played leading up to national signing day this week: “Something that I encountered in the last 48 hours, which was completely new to me, was a lot of schools are now just calling within the last 48 hours of a kid’s signing and throwing out crazy numbers just to get them to sign with them on signing day. They’re utilizing NIL packages as the main motivation, which is exactly what we don’t want to happen. We don’t want NIL to be an inducement. … Until we get some uniformed – I’m again 100% for our student-athletes earning money for the product they put on the field. The 12-team playoff is a $1B media opportunity. These players all deserve it. They deserve to earn some piece of it. But to find some sort of uniformity to it, it’s really going to be crucial. Charlie Baker’s got his hands full trying, that’s for sure. It’s definitely becoming more and more of a hot topic in every living room you sit in and every recruit you try to recruit.” (link)

A new survey by Sportico and The Harris Poll that examines how sports leagues’ fans lean ideologically finds college football has the most conservative fan base, with 58% identifying as such. On the other end of the spectrum, 53% of men’s college basketball fans identify as liberal. Meanwhile, 55% of women’s college basketball fans identify as conservative. The poll finds that 55% of the country self-identifies as conservative. The NFL (56%) and MLB (57%) fall to the right of that line while the NHL (54%), NBA (58%) and WNBA (50%) fall to the left. Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit: “Beyond gauging fans’ personal political affiliations, the poll also asked Americans how they perceive the political leanings of those same leagues. In several instances, there were stark differences between how liberal or conservative Americans think certain sports are, and the reality of their fanbases. For example, 63% of Americans said they thought women’s college basketball was ‘more liberal,’ despite the survey finding 55% of fans to be ‘more conservative.’ In the other direction, 59% of Americans perceived LIV Golf as ‘more conservative,’ despite its followers’ progressive lean.” (link)
