Sports Business Journal’s Ben Portnoy adds more detail to NCAA President Charlie Baker’s time at last week’s SBJ Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in Las Vegas, which included insights from Baylor President Linda Livingstone: “We’ve historically been very reactive to [charting a future course for college athletics]. We need to really step up and own this and show people that we can actually govern college athletics in recognizing it needs to be done differently than it was done in the past. I think this is a great starting point for that conversation to say, ‘How could we do this?’ This is a framework we can work from and move it forward.” When asked what the NCAA needs to do better, Baker responded, “Get stuff done.” More. Duke Football student-athlete DeWayne Carter is the namesake in the new Carter v. NCAA lawsuit filed last week. Carter was on hand yesterday for the introduction of new Blue Devils Football HC Manny Diaz, but was not allowed to engage with the media. Duke AD Nina King: “DeWayne is a fantastic kid. We don't treat him any differently. We won't deal with him any differently. But we're still looking at what all of that means for us.” (link)

Now live on Connect: Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris sits down with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to discuss her vision for the Ivy League and its place in the industry, onboarding new leaders, preparing assistant coaches for head coaching opportunities, ensuring longevity for Olympic sports and more. “Anytime I have an opportunity to speak on a panel, to speak to individuals with influence outside our ecosystem – and even within our national meetings – I advocate for our broad-based sports sponsorship. I think it's so important to everything that we are working on because if you really believe in the collegiate experience and the value sport brings to the student, then that applies across the board. And it benefits us as a country when it comes to the Olympics for sure, so that is something I always try to emphasize.” Full Q&A. (link)

VCU AD Ed McLaughlin says the university is prepared to pursue legal action and "exhaust every option" in advocating for the eligibility of men's basketball student-athlete Joe Bamisile, whose appeal request for immediate eligibility was denied last month by the NCAA. McLaughlin: “We’re hoping and expecting the NCAA will reconsider his case at this point and grant him the ability to play right away. It’s what’s fair and just in this situation. We hope the NCAA comes to a fair and just resolution with this. And if not, there’s obviously legal action we will pursue immediately because, I’ve told this to Joe and I’ve told it to everyone, I will exhaust every option for this young man. And it’s not because of our basketball program. … I’m willing to fight for that dude every day of the week and twice on Sundays.” Bamisile has been on the rosters at Virginia Tech, George Washington and Oklahoma, where last year he was granted a waiver to compete for the Sooners. On a recent episode of Sporting Class, former ESPN President John Skipper denies that he or anyone at ESPN holds sway over the College Football Playoff selection. In fact, if he had his way, the playoff would have been eight teams all along. Skipper: “They never asked for my opinion, I never offered it to them. The idea that there’s some secret call made from ESPN into the 13-member room, it’s silly. … We did not get to pick Alabama being in and FSU being out. I will guarantee you that nobody at ESPN called and said, ‘we’re going to pay you less money,’ or ‘you have to do this for us.’ We didn’t. … Maybe since I left, [the selection committee has] become corruptible.” (link)

More ESPN notes as College GameDay announces it will be on hand for next year’s Week 0 matchup between Florida State & Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland. It’ll mark the first time GameDay will be broadcast outside the U.S. (link); New GameDay personality Pat McAfee says he’ll be back on the show next year, though he points to some vitriol he receives via social media as one downside of being on the show: “How about this? I’m back. I don’t love it. I don’t love that my life is just going to continue to have people telling me to run into oncoming traffic, swallow a barrel.” (link)

USA Basketball earlier this year unveiled a new website in partnership with WMT, and USA Basketball Director of Communications Michael Terry tells SBJ’s Ethan Joyce the revamp had three overarching goals: to create an easier user experience for fans, a quality content management system for the team to use now and build on, and an ability to respond quickly to commercial opportunities around new competitions. To accomplish those objectives, Terry says: “We needed someone who was very familiar with working in sports, and also a partner who could really help us on the tech side of things.” The challenge piqued the interest of WMT Chief Innovation Officer Chris Freet, who calls USA Basketball a “one of one brand” and adds: “Those are the challenges, quite honestly, that we like. We’re not an out-of-the-box solution. We’re not an SaaS company. We like interesting problems.” The finished product’s benefits include “enhanced historical record-keeping and a site structure that placed editorial content on an aesthetically pleasing pedestal,” and Terry notes: “We're spending a lot more time and resources, creating more editorial content, digital and written. What we now know is that having this website means that people are actually seeing it, people are actually reading it, people are consuming it, which I think we were worried about prior just because it was a little harder to get around.” More. Sports psychologist Mitch Abrams, known by many as “the anger management guy in sports,” explains there is a fine line between bullying athletes and administering tough coaching. “There are times that a coach might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, and the athlete was already struggling with life as it is. The coach needs to create an environment where he or she says, ‘Listen, I’m going to coach you guys hard because I think that’s what’s necessary in order to get you to be the best version of yourself. But just because I’m coaching you hard, I’m not malicious. I don’t want to hurt you. And I want you to be able to talk to me if that’s how you feel.’ … The trick answer is if you don’t know where the line is, ask the athletes, because that’s the line that we use with harassment legally, right?” Abrams also agrees it’s possible that athletes can be “softer” than they used to be; however, he’s quick to point out that characterizing the entire generation as soft is an unfair generalization. There are, he explains, good and bad reasons for athletes being “softer.” The good: they are more willing to speak up when they believe they are being bullied. The bad: “Narcissism is a natural consequence of chronic winning. … And then people start giving me a different set of rules. I don’t have to finish my homework, and now with NIL — oh, my God — let’s give them money and cars, right? … If you don’t have that counterbalanced with the parenting, good coaching, good discipline, accountability, sportsmanship, then you run the risk of these athletes turning into a**holes.” Lots more. Army West Point AD Mike Buddie joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to pull back the curtain on the Black Knights' upcoming move to the AAC in football. Buddie talks about the initial conversations with the conference, the importance of stability in selecting a football conference, what role media rights played and more. He also discusses the Michie Stadium Preservation Project and the need for the service academies to be in alignment, about which he says: “We’re the only three schools that NIL doesn’t pertain to us, and our transfer portals for the most part are exit-only. So, it’s important that we preserve those rivalries and we get to compete against our sister academics. So, extremely important certainly, again, Navy having such a great experience being able to provide a championship opportunity for their players. We think this is going to help Coach Monken and his staff recruit if we can be successful in this league. Air Force has found a great home in the Mountain West. They've been very competitive and so we were kind of that last little school out there, you know, UMass, UConn and Army. We were the three guys on the phone constantly trying to figure out ways to secure our future and we just feel fortunate that the American extended us that invitation.” (link)

Charlotte’s board of trustees approved an additional $1.25M for advance planning Thursday, bringing the university’s financial commitment to $2M for the first phase of expansion to Jerry Richardson Stadium. Barton Malow Builders has been selected as the construction manager for the advance planning stage of the project. The initial estimate to expand from 15K to 30K seats was $81M and while the 49ers are $19M away from reaching that fundraising goal, construction costs have continued to rise in the two years since the estimate. Advance planning is expected to be completed by the board’s next meeting in mid-February, with project authorization the next step. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the latest major litigation threat of Carter v. NCAA: “Carter v. NCAA is banking on courts in the mid-2020s viewing amateurism rules with greater suspicion given the rise of commercialism in college sports and Alston making clear ordinary antitrust scrutiny applies. [...] Carter v. NCAA is separate from In Re College Athlete NIL Litigation, which is led by the same attorneys, features [TCU WBB student-athlete Sedona] Prince as a plaintiff and has been certified as a class action. In Re College Athlete NIL Litigation argues the NCAA and Power Five have violated antitrust law by for denying 1.) broadcasting revenue with players, 2.) revenue that would have been possible in college sports video games and 3.) NIL opportunities prior to 2021. These cases are similar but Carter v. NCAA is more fundamentally an attempt to end amateurism. [...] The NCAA has long argued amateurism also enhances education and equality, including for women’s sports. In response, [attorneys Jeffrey] Kessler, [Steve] Berman and others will dispute the validity of those points and note the legal landscape.” Lots more. (link)

LSU QB Jayden Daniels’ progression this season has been aided by virtual reality training designed by German company Cognilize, whose founders, Verena Krakau and Christian Hartmann, wanted to find ways to increase reps without needing to be on a field with 21 other players. The Athletic’s Alec Lewis points out they specifically wanted to know; “How could they present information to athletes’ brains that the brain would treat as if it is real practice? They settled on building an artificially intelligent platform that can be funneled to the athlete through a virtual reality headset.” Krakau: “We created everything with real biomechanics movements. It’s not just like Madden where people are moving around more robotically.” Krakau and Hartmann visited LSU to gather feedback on the platform, and their trip resulted in “a full-on partnership. As coaches prepared for the season, [Tigers Director of Performance Innovation Jack] Marucci and [Performance Innovation & Analytics Assistant Mario] Macaluso essentially transformed their roles into the beta testers for a new player development tool.” Together, they created a system in which Daniels could run each play on LSU’s call sheet before the Mississippi State game against simulated defenses. That week, he was 30 of 34 for 361 yards and two TDs against the Bulldogs, and he began increasing his use of the platform each week. Now, he is the favorite to accept the real-world Heisman Trophy tonight. Lots more. (link)

Sportico’s Anthony Crupi examines the reasons why marketers spend upwards of $78.7B a year to reach the 18-49 demo and submits: “The practice of selling demos is predicated on tortured logic—young people are hard to reach, therefore they must be a more valuable resource—and a wheezy set of assumptions about brand loyalty that has never been elevated from the realm of the hypothetical. That the 18-49 demo was more or less plucked out of thin air 60 years ago only serves to underscore the capriciousness of the entire enterprise. … Long story short-ish: ABC essentially fabricated a demo out of whole cloth to steal share from its more widely distributed competitors. To this day, that arbitrary age group remains the coin of the realm for a marketplace that no more resembles the ‘60s TV landscape than Dick Clark’s weekly musical showcase resembles our current pop music environment.” Nowadays, Crupi continues, even though “networks are able to slice and dice their audiences into ever-more-discrete segments, 18-49 is still the metric that commands the bulk of the ad dollars” despite its arbitrary construct.
