The Great Debate...
+ Florida State AD Michael Alford: “We can stack our defense up against any offense in the nation. And, given a month to prepare, our offense will be ready. This is why we play the game. Otherwise, let's just sit around and see who the oddsmakers pick and do away with the committee. Because if they leave out FSU, they will significantly damage the legitimacy of the CFP.” (link)
+ Alabama’s Greg Byrne: “If we would have played a Group of Five game instead of Texas, there’d be no debate right now.” (link); More: “Win over No. 1 in their backyard. Four wins over the top 25 … the growth and development of our team from week 1 to week 12. And not all schedules and conferences are created equal … the week-in and week-out in the SEC is the most challenging in the country.” (link)
+ Texas’ Chris Del Conte: “I don’t know how we’re not.” (link)
+ Georgia’s Josh Brooks echoes SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who used a famous Sesame Street line during ESPN College GameDay yesterday to describe the competition level in the SEC versus the rest of the sport: “One of these things is not like the other!” (link)

Group of 5 Selection Debate…
+ AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco: “SMU joins a long list of American Athletic Conference champions that have proven themselves worthy of a New Year’s Six bowl bid. To challenge themselves as they did in non-conference games, playing competitive games on the road ... and beating a ranked team on the road to win The American Championship, shows that the Mustangs are undoubtedly one of the top teams in the nation and deserving of a New Year’s Six bid.” (link)
+ Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod: “Liberty, the nation’s only 13-0 G5 league champion, has proven itself beyond worthy of a New Year’s Six bowl bid. Liberty’s perfect season is something that should be celebrated and capping it off with a second win over a 10-win New Mexico State team in the CUSA Championship Game on Friday night stamped an exclamation point on their resume.” (link)

Kansas alum Brad Garlinghouse has committed $35M to the KU Endowment to support the Gateway District project. KU AD Travis Goff: “In my time here, Brad has continuously looked for ways to help support the future of Kansas Athletics at an important time of change. This investment supports all 500-plus of our student-athletes, who in recent semesters have had record-breaking performances in the classroom and on their respective playing fields. Each of them will benefit from Brad’s amazing gift, and we are truly honored by that.” (link)

Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to look inside bowl game prep, the process of selecting teams and what types of things factor into that decision. Hogan on student-athlete revenue sharing: “Our job remains the same. How are we all working together to create as many opportunities for the student-athletes and the institution as humanly possible? One big piece of that is revenue. You’re always doing that, that hasn’t changed, it’s just about how that revenue gets distributed.” Hogan is a proponent of NIL, from the business aspects, the tax prep, etc, “What a learning tool in this learning lab of a college experience. … Bowls, we have to play in that NIL space and grossing up opportunities for all the student-athletes if we can.” Lots more. Clemson Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance Amanda Richardson talks all things NIL with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker, including the Clemson Athletics Branding Institute, working with collectives, agents, and the impact of changes to the portal window. The two also discuss voluntary registration for NIL deals, Transformation Committee recommendations and more. Richardson notes that some student-athletes don’t want to participate in NIL deals because their plates are already full. “They’re having to go to school, they're doing study hall, maybe they have tutors, they have practice. The majority of them that want to play at the next level want to do more work from an athletic standpoint. Their coaches can't be there obviously, but their calendars are already full, and then they're trying to squeeze in something else. We had a company reach out this summer to a student-athlete, and they were just like, ‘I'm just taking the summer off. I just want to focus on myself.’ Because mental health is obviously a big topic these days within athletics and so I think that we institutionally…put so much on these individuals and then on top of that they put so much on themselves, I think it's good that student athletes are just saying, ‘Hey I just need time for me. I need to take a break.’” (link)

College of Charleston is the latest department to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect for access to its administrative Talent Finder to assist with identification, recruiting, vetting & hiring of new staff. Cougars Deputy AD Kyle Denzel: “We are excited to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect to enhance our ability to attract and recruit talented professionals in collegiate sports. The staff at Connect has been extremely responsive and helpful in our mission to get staffed up with the best professionals as quickly as possible.” (link)

Friday night’s Washington-Oregon Pac-12 Football Championship tilt on ABC was the most-watched title game in league history with an average of 9.2M viewers & a peak of 11.1M. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner chimes in: “If the tactics and leadership had been different, the conference could have bet on itself in 2023 and pushed the media deal into the winter - and it would be in great position. But the lack of trust made that impossible” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips ahead of tonight’s Football championship game between Florida State & Louisville at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte: “You have to be an owner in your own city. An owner with championships. An owner with bowl games. You can’t be a renter in your own city. You have to own.” Naturally, the question of how Charlotte will participate in the league’s hoops tournaments is a key area of focus for Phillips: “It’s important for Charlotte to absolutely be part of the rotation in the future of ACC basketball, for men and for women. So we will do that. ... You have to have a home base to me, and a place that you rotate out of occasionally. ... Listening to the membership, meaning that our presidents and athletic directors and coaches, they really like Charlotte and they like North Carolina [...] There are nearly 100,000 ACC alums in the Charlotte area.” Phillips also offered updated thoughts on conference realignment: “Listen, there’s a traditionalist in all of us. I wish we could play football just every Saturday afternoon and never play it any other day of the week. Right? But that’s just the evolution of college sports. And I really feel good about where the ACC is headed.” (link)

Lindenwood announces it will cut Men's Lacrosse, Men's and Women’s Swimming and Diving, Men's Tennis, Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Men's Wrestling, Field Hockey and Women's Gymnastics. Lions AD Jason Coomer: “Today, and for the near future, it will be challenging as the decision to better align our athletics department with our peers also results in many of our student-athletes learning that they will no longer be able to compete in the sport they love while at Lindenwood. As an Athletics Director, this is not a decision you ever want to have to make. Unfortunately, it is critical for the long-term sustainability of the department. I understand there will be considerable hurt felt by the ten teams impacted as well as by our staff and coaches." The school says roughly 284 student-athletes will be impacted, but scholarships for those student-athletes and those who signed letters of intent will be honored through their undergraduate education. Field Hockey will be cut immediately, while the others will finish their 2024 campaigns. (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez on if she’s worried about the Pac-2 poaching schools from her league: “Honestly, isn't that today's environment for every conference? Not just the Pac-12 or Pac-2 … it used to be a once-every-decade issue + now we think about it weekly.” Further, Nevarez says Oregon State & Washington State will not have any say in which MWC teams it plays on the gridiron. (link, link); Related, from The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “My one cent: If WA Supreme Court tosses the case to appellate in Spokane, we'll see a settlement quickly. The 10 will see the writing on wall and the 2 want it to end quickly. Unknown: If the court will make that determination on 12/12 deadline for review motions.” (link)

Oregon responds to the Title IX lawsuit filed by 32 current & former female student-athletes, in part: “UO athletics provides all student-athletes, including our female athletes, with academic support, tutoring, student-athlete development, medical care, mental health support, meals and snacks, and nutrition and sports training. With the modernization of NCAA rules in recent years, we are also proud that we have been able to provide student-athletes with the maximum academic benefit allowed within the restrictions of the Alston decision, in addition to these other benefits.” (link)

USF has terminated its design-build agreement with Michigan-based Barton Malow and will hire a different construction management firm for the Bulls’ new football stadium project. USF AD Michael Kelly and USF Foundation CEO Jay Stroman are scheduled to provide an update on the situation to the Board of Trustees on Tuesday. Construction is still scheduled to start in 2024 as the plan “hasn’t changed,” per a school spokesperson. Populous was the designer in the original contract but “will retain its work with USF.” (link)

UCLA Senior Assoc. AD for Policy, Risk & People Lindsey Cornwell joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker at the 2023 Women Leaders Convention to highlight several topics, including her own unique title, the structure and scope of her role and the preparation to move to the Big Ten. Cornwell also discusses how the Bruins are building infrastructure to support student-athletes with increased travel demands next season: “This decision doesn’t come with[out] the student-athletes’ wellbeing top of mind. … So, in every decision we want our student-athletes to be set up for success, and that means making sure that they have all the resources they need when they're on the road – making sure that we're mitigating unnecessary travel as much as possible, making sure they have the academic resources the tutors that they need to be successful while they're on the road and while they're at home.” Full Q&A on Connect. Stillwater police are investigating a situation in which a dead longhorn was found in front of an Oklahoma State fraternity house ahead of today’s Big 12 Championship game against Texas. OSU in a statement indicates OSU “is appalled at the disturbing display of animal cruelty that occurred overnight at an off-campus location near a fraternity house.” FarmHouse fraternity officials say the group is cooperating with the investigation. “Upon discovering the animal, the men of OSU FarmHouse immediately notified authorities, and Stillwater Police Department is involved and investigating the situation, along with the OSU Office of Student Support and Conduct. We will continue to cooperate and fully support law enforcement throughout the investigation.” (link)

Apple and Paramount have discussed bundling their streaming services at a discount, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel, who notes the talks are in the early stages and it’s unclear what form the bundle could take. Toonkel adds: “Both Apple TV+ and Paramount+ had a customer-defection rate—known in the industry as churn—of more than 7% in October, a higher rate than the 5.7% average for the streaming industry as a whole, according to Antenna data.” (link)
