Congrats go out to Northwestern, this year’s women’s lacrosse national champs. HC Amonte Hiller on winning her 10th title, her eighth with the Wildcats: “Honestly, it means everything. I can't even tell you what went into this. So many years from 2012, the last time we won ... it means so much. I am so proud of this group. I said in the summer before the season we have to get them to believe. They believed in everything. It's so sweet. I'm so proud of this group.” (link)

Outgoing Florida Executive Assoc. AD for External Affairs/former Auburn AD Jacobs joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to reflect on his nearly 40-year career in college athletics, explain what he focused on when building the Tigers’ infrastructure, shares his thoughts on the current changes within the industry and lots more. Jacobs says there’s always pressure to hire household names as coaches, and “the wonderful thing is, regardless of which institution that you’re working with, your fan base believes that everybody wants to come to your school. So, when they say you should go hire John Doe who has won 24 national championships because we’ve heard he wants to leave ABC University. Well, when you start investigating it a little bit, John Doe doesn’t care anything about leaving ABC University. But that is hard for fans because they’re so emotionally attached – which, hey, that’s not a complaint. That’s what makes it great.” Moving forward into an increasingly ambiguous future, Jacobs notes the industry needs to be more agile than it has been historically. “Change is going to happen, so be open to it. That doesn’t mean you compromise any of your values…[but] start looking around the curve and be flexible enough and agile enough to change.” The full Q&A is now available on Connect. (link)

Nebraska President Carter continues to provide his perspective on the state of college athletics: “We’re at a major intersection. NIL is still the wild, wild west. There’s more conference realignment coming. If you look at college football, there’s going to be a group of have’s and have not’s. [...] I worry about (student-athletes becoming employees). I want to make sure I understand what’s on the table. I argue that there’s a value to every athlete we recruit, with that scholarship they are already getting paid, total cost in attendance, all the other things we do to take care of them. That, combined with the transfer portal, it really does start to look like a professional sports organization. [...] I think if they (Congress) become involved, we’ve lost. The head of the NCAA has to help us get this answered before Congress gives us some sort of enforcement in it. I feel for those who serve at that level. They are thankless jobs. College athletics should not be part of their portfolio.” More from the Omaha World-Herald. (link)

Utah-based protein bar company Built Bar has yet to pay BYU football student-athletes all the money that was promised, according to the Salt Lake Tribune’s Reynolds and Jag. In its highly publicized announcement, Built said it would continue to pay tuition for walk-ons and that scholarship players would each receive $1K. Additionally, Built CEO Greer said 15% of all proceeds from the CougarTail Bar would go directly to players who signed NIL contracts with the company, and Reynolds and Jag report that while the scholarship and $1K checks have cleared, players say the CougarTail proceeds have not. Meanwhile, one player said that he received text messages from people saying they had bought his NFT through Ocavu, but none of the players interviewed by the Tribune received payment from Ocavu. Other deals have similarly failed to come to fruition, and one player says: “It felt like BYU was telling us what we wanted to hear to keep us happy, but it never actually happened. People would present and say it was ‘life-changing money.’ Then nothing.” More from Reynolds and Jag. (link, link)

Men’s hoops coaches talk anonymously with On3’s Shaw about their thoughts on how NIL and the transfer portal are changing the sport, with one ACC coach saying: “I think the portal has made me take a deeper look into how quickly a high school player can help contribute to winning. Prior to the portal era, I feel like you could wait until conference play of their sophomore year for them to take that leap. With the ability to go into the portal in the spring and get an experienced college player, I feel like I’m less likely to want to wait as long for a high school player to develop.” A Big 12 coach laments the inability to build anything stable due to the lack of retention. “You can’t recruit eight or nine guys every year and expect to be cutting down nets. Returning seven or eight guys each year and only bringing in three or four new faces is where we want to be.” Meanwhile, an Atlantic 10 coach tells Shaw: “I like recruiting the portal. It’s a more sure thing. There is a lot more data, more stats, more film on players. But the problem with the portal is that everyone is recruiting it, so there are no sleepers there.” (link)

The Detroit Free Press’ Sabin believes Michigan State has “sacrificed” a lot for the Big Ten over the past year. In addition to not rescheduling a home game against Minnesota in the wake the tragic shooting that occurred on campus in February, Sabin notes the league denied MSU football student-athlete Crump’s appeal for a reduced suspension stemming from his role in the Michigan Stadium tunnel assault last year and asked the Spartans to move a home game against Penn State to Ford Field in Detroit. Spartans AD Haller tells Sabin: “There is a bit of sacrifice. But make no mistake: I’m not going to do anything or agree to anything that hurts Michigan State. My responsibility is first to our student-athletes and to Michigan State University.” Sabin consequently observes: “Haller is one who has stayed nimble in this fluid environment. He has shown a willingness to go with the flow, if only this once. But the Big Ten should recognize what MSU is relinquishing in the process and give thanks. Then it must return the favor when the time comes and demonstrate a commitment to hold up its end of the bargain with the Spartans.” (link)

Boston College Senior Associate AD for Internal Operations/SWA Cobb and Northern Illinois Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration/SWA Vinson sit down with Clemson Asst. AD for Student-Athlete Development Niemann for a candid discussion on management topics, ranging from leading a team and delegating tasks to self-management and accountability strategies. Vinson explains her philosophy on empowering staff: “I always try and make some time to check in with my staff to make sure they’re all right and they have everything they need to do their job for that day…because here’s the thing: I’m not about to go in and do their jobs. I love them. And they know that. But I don’t have the time to do your job and my job, too.” She also says that when tasks need to be delegated, she tends to focus on those who are already proficient in their current roles. “So, if I’m asking them to do something extra, I know the actual job is not going to be put to the side. I know that job is going to be done well, and then whatever I give you extra, they typically have met the mark. If you’re struggling at your job, I cannot rightfully delegate something new to you.” Lots more in the full conversation. (link)

ESPN Chairman Pitaro tells The Big Lead that “audience expansion” is one of the company’s priorities, adding: “That means a lot of things, but it especially means attracting a younger audience. We feel like Pat [McAfee] really helps us in that regard. … We’ve been in business with Pat for some time by now. He’s done a fantastic job for us on College GameDay, he’s done some alternate broadcasts that have really resonated with our audience, so we feel like his show is a natural extension of what we’re already doing.” (link)

Penn State AD Kraft on resources for the Nittany Lions hoops programs: “I want to win national championships. I’m here to win national championships. [...] So what do you have to do to win? You’ve got to invest. And you’ve got to be focused on the right investments to get us to where we want. [...] I think really looking at the practice facility is a big issue right now. We’re trying to figure out what’s the best way. I think everything is on the table. ... A practice facility is something that would be down the road right now, but I think it’s something we’re really looking at. [...] At the end of the day, you could have the Taj Mahal but if you’re not taking care of your kids then it doesn’t matter. And I think the other thing is continuing to allow our staffs to go recruit the best athletes and giving them the best opportunity to be successful in the recruiting landscape is key. ... How you travel is really important and how we take care of both programs in that regard because I believe we can win.” (link)

“I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again: We’re never gonna be first, but we’re never gonna be last.” That’s Nebraska AD Alberts on his approach to NIL in Lincoln. On the hire of new Asst. AD for NIL Strategy & Governance Bateman: “I’ll tell you: I probably should’ve done this six months ago. You think about, well, six months isn’t very long, but the amount of change in six months is crazy. [...] We have a dedicated person now that’s looking at everything from what other schools are doing, what our state law looks like, should we amend the state law. So making recommendations about how we best position not only ourselves but our collectives, our student-athletes to be successful. Because this is a highly evolving space, and we need to be a leader in it.” (link)

Coming up on her one-year anniversary leading the Wolf Pack, Nevada AD Rempe visits with Nevada SportsNet’s Murray, dives into the efforts surrounding the “Nevada’s College Town” initiative, to “get people excited” about wearing blue/Wolf Pack gear on Wolf Pack Fridays and the hire of Friends of the Pack GM Clutts to assist with NIL efforts. Construction on the Lannes basketball building will begin in June and the Cashell Fieldhouse locker room project should wrap up this summer. A combined $7M is still needed for the two projects. On the football season tickets front, Rempe says less than 100 tickets remain to move to reach last year’s number and “we’re spending a lot of time figuring out how to ensure the gameday experience is exceptional.” (link)

Louisville AD Heird has talked to Cardinals Baseball HC McDonnell after comments last week called into question the department’s commitment to McDonnell’s program. Heird: “Dan and I have touched base on a number of topics this week. He’s an incredible coach who’s built an incredible program. We’re going to work hard and we’re committed to making sure he has what he needs to compete for championships.” (link)

Kansas State baseball is surging toward the postseason, but an RPI of 55 as of this morning may be its undoing. Wildcats HC Hughes has an idea: “If you’re tied to certain teams in certain regions, I’ve always said let’s take your worst four or five RPI games and let’s drop it from the resume for the calculations. Let’s not have those games count toward your resume. There are some lower Division I teams that don’t have the funds that are counting on programs like ours to help fund them by some of the guarantees that we provide. Now, we’re in a position where we won’t or can’t play those teams. They’ll hurt our RPI, and in turn, the RPI will end up hurting those programs, too.” (link)

Former Syracuse women’s basketball HC Hillsman received $770K+ in severance pay following his resignation in 2021. With $1.29M in earnings that year, Hillsman was the fifth-highest paid among all SU employees. Orange football HC Babers, who pulled in just over $4M in 2021, topped the list, while former men’s basketball HC Boeheim ranked third at $2.8M. Chancellor Syverud’s fourth-place spot came with his $1.48M payday and AD Wildhack earned just over $1M, good for sixth-best. (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker is joined by Insurance Protection Consultants Co-Founder Brookbank, who offers some insight on how the Transformation Committee and Modernization of Rules Subcommittee’s deregulation around insurance is affecting the marketplace, what campus leaders should be thinking about regarding insurance management, how insurance companies look at mental health from a policy-scripting standpoint and lots more. Brookbank also points out that some of the larger collectives are paying the premiums for student-athletes’ insurance policies, “and there’s no legislation out there that says that they cannot pay the premium for that right now. I think ultimately there will be some type of federal legislation out there dictating how premiums can be paid, what sources it can be paid from. It may include collectives. It may not include collectives. We have no idea.” Lots more to unpack in the full video on Connect. (link)

How about this approach from Auburn’s football recruiting department, which created a graphic identifying the Tigers as the only school in the SEC with a Buc-ee’s gas station. The message landed with 2024 Texas high school recruit Campbell, who is from Refugio,Texas, not far from the first Buc-ee’s in Clute, Texas, and his retweet of the graphic set the ball rolling. As you can imagine, Ole Miss football HC Kiffin pounced, having his graphics team mimic the message boasting the Chevron gas station in Oxford as the only one that sells chicken on a stick. USF HC Golesh bragged about the Bulls as the only school with an on-campus Publix grocery store. Good stuff. (link)

Illinois lawmakers voted to extend in-person betting on in-state college teams until July 1, 2024. PlayUSA’s Kredell: “Rep. Bob Rita pushed to add Illinois college betting to SB 98, which includes one-year extensions on various sunsets unrelated to gaming. There’s little doubt Gov. J.B. Pritzker will sign the bill extending the sunsets. Illinois athletic directors supported the extension.” (link)
