#8: Virginia Wesleyan President Scott Miller says the university’s decision to rename the institution Batten University is final, amidst protest and pushback from alumni. Executive Director of Marketing and Communications Tina Raines: “This past week has reminded us how deeply Virginia Wesleyan lives in the hearts of our alumni. […] [Our alumni] will always be part of this community, and their legacy is what makes our future possible. A name like Batten—associated with nationally renowned philanthropists whose vision and generosity have shaped our University—helps us broaden our appeal while honoring the foundation alumni helped build. As President Miller explained, this decision is final.” An online petition has garnered over 5K signatures in an effort to stop the change. (link, link)

#4: Chicago is working on cutting $100M in expenses as a result of changes from the federal government and two years of budget deficits. President Paul Alivisatos says measures will include a loss of 100-150 jobs and a reduction in senior leadership positions, scaling back on capital projects, discontinuing programs, pausing enrollment in doctoral and master’s programs and more. #3: Utica declared financial exigency at the beginning of the financial year, after announcing plans to cut $5M in faculty costs. The declaration did not become public until the AAUP Utica shared the information. President Todd Pfannestiel on the latest financial moves: “We would still have 73 degrees at all levels being offered at the university. And, if the deletions do occur, if the eliminations occur, that would be 19 degrees; 73 still here, 19, if all of them are deleted. […] One hundred percent confident we will be here in five years. I can speak with that certainty because we have structurally looked at the plan and what we need to do.” (link, link)

#2: Kenyon names former Southern Illinois (DI)/Western Illinois (DI) AD Tommy Bell as its Interim AD, starting Monday. The Owls selected Bell through The Registry, which specializes in interim placements across higher education. The college will work with Parker Executive Search to find its next AD. (link)

VP for Facilities and Administration Jim Mustard: “Jordan's extensive and varied experience in university athletics will be an asset to the university.
