The field of 48 teams has been selected for both the 2024 NCAA DII Men’s & Women’s Tennis Championships. On the men’s side, Charleston, Washburn, Queens, UIndy, UT Tyler, Valdosta State, Flagler and Azusa Pacific hold down the top spots in their respective regions, while on the women’s side, Charleston, Nebraska-Kearney, Queens, UIndy, Midwestern State, Barry, North Georgia and Academy of Art are No. 1 regional seeds. St. Cloud State announces plans to cut approximately 100 academic programs and 57 faculty positions in reaction to a major budget deficit of approximately $15M. In a letter to the campus community, Acting President Larry Lee cited the need to slash as much as $9M from the budget by the year 2026 with more reductions slated for the future. Lee: "The higher education landscape is facing unprecedented struggles – student enrollment declines, affordability concerns, a proliferation of higher education alternatives, public perception of college degrees, and financial strains…among others. These decisions are painful; yet they are necessary for SCSU to continue to fulfill its mission." These cuts come on the heels of those made last year that “reduced the university’s deficit from approximately $24 million to about $18 million at the time.” (link)

Deloitte in its report on 2024 higher ed trends calls for presidents to be more involved in the conversations around athletics: “Presidents and their leadership teams should be prepared with risk mitigation strategies and be ready to take decisive action in partnership with other university officials, the [NCAA], their conference leaders, and state legislators. … In evaluating the president’s role in athletics decisions, the following questions must be considered: When should the president be consulted? What relationships should the president have with the NCAA, their conference leaders, and state legislators? How and when should the president be the decision-maker? In conjunction with the governing board, in-house counsel, and strategic communications teams, presidents should define their roles and develop plans for decision-making, risk mitigation, and crisis management.” Deloitte also advises establishing institutional guidelines for the financial support of student-athletes; developing approaches to support student-athletes' mental and physical well-being; establishing processes and governance around Title IX implications; and developing long-term strategies for preserving the unique character of college athletics. “The distinct culture, traditions, and experiences of college sports differentiate them from professional leagues. Preserving these characteristics in an evolving landscape will require strategies to prevent damage to the institution’s connection with students, parents, alumni, donors, and community members.” Lots more in the full report.
