The Ball State Daily’s Adam Altobella tackles the question of whether it’s time to expand the field for the NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship. With the National Collegiate (NC) level featuring a blend of both DI and DII men’s volleyball teams, the NCAA field as currently comprised is limited to just eight spots with only two of those available for at-large selections. In 2024, 62 overall teams competed at the NC level, with five making their debut and 10 more schools set to join over the next two seasons. Altobella: “The AVCA expanded its national poll from a 15-team to a 20-team ranking this season to presumably account for this growth; it is only reasonable for the NCAA to do the same with the national tournament … The NCAA has the power to amend the structure of the sport for the better, and it should use its position to its advantage. A 10-, 12- or 16-team field would all be more suitable than what is currently in play and would greatly benefit the future of boys’ and men’s volleyball.” (link)

A report released by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that during the 2021-22 academic year, 93% of universities had female athletic participation rates lower than their enrollment rate. Meanwhile, 63% of schools had participation-enrollment gaps of 10% or more. The athletic participation rate for collegiate women overall was 14% less than their enrollment rate. Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “The report also took to task the federal sub-agency responsible for overseeing Title IX compliance—the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights—concluding it has made only limited use of available Title IX data in its oversight purposes and is slow in its monitoring processes. GAO based that conclusion on a review of OCR case management data from 2008 to 2022. Even when schools entered into formal agreements to improve Title IX compliance, OCR routinely dragged its feet to provide feedback. For example, in 10 of 26 cases GAO reviewed, the Office of Civil Rights took more than a year to review and approve a school’s plans to get into compliance; in five cases, OCR went silent for over five years.” Bailey & Glasser attorney Arthur Bryant: “This report confirms the sad, shameful truth. Most colleges in America are violating Title IX and depriving women of equal opportunities to participate in intercollegiate athletics. The federal government isn’t enforcing the law and making them comply like it should. So this illegal sex discrimination is continuing. University Magazine releases a Niche Ranking list that “highlights the best colleges for athletics in 2024, considering factors such as sports facilities, coaching quality, team performance and overall student support.” Among the top 25, seven DII schools were featured: No. 3 Northwest Missouri State, No. 4 Grand Valley State, No. 7 Central Missouri, No. 10 Augustana (SD), No. 18 Florida Southern, No. 19 Ferris State and No. 20 Pittsburg State. Citing a report from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) Project that analyzed 553 campus protests between April 18 and May 3, Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody reports that “demonstrations relating to the war in Gaza have been overwhelmingly peaceful, with little serious violence and limited property damage.” ACLED’s report noted that of those 553 identified protests, 97 percent remained peaceful. “ACLED defines physical violence as anything more than pushing and shoving, and property destruction as ‘breaking a window or worse,’” with violence between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protesters at UCLA as a noted exception. The project also pointed to the mid-April arrests at Columbia as the inflection point for protests with additional encampments soon popping up throughout the U.S. (link)
